How to Get There
We didn't stay at the hotel as we have a motorhome, but we used a voucher to play golf on one of our favourite courses.
Excellent pro - he lent us a driver because my husband had left his behind; no charge, just leave it at the bar afterwards. Impressed by that trust & level of service.
Course has a fantastic design that sits beautifully & sympathetically in the valley; a fair challenge; a long walk (my phone said over 6 miles); cracking views not just of the iconic viaduct. Meticulously & faultlessly maintained - very well done to the green keepers. The cross-mown skirts to the greens were as smart as the rump of a Kelso racehorse.
Sadly (and not in any way the course management's fault, and not unique to this course) too many golfers have no respect for those following behind - I lost count of how many bunkers I raked as a courtesy, that didn't have our footprints in them.
Didn't eat at the bar or restaurant afterwards but the menu looked delicious.
Friendly staff, roaring open fires, a cosy bar, good food, good rooms, quiet and peaceful in it's own grounds with a golf course. The surrounding Borders area has many interesting towns and historic houses to visit - I like Kelso and Melrose.
This would be a good hotel to stay for a quiet break or for touring the area.
given this m not sure why we were given (2 couples) appalling rooms to start with . after complaining we got a free upgrade. still rooms really will need the refurb fro mthe group (german) who bought it and will spend 30M$(we were told) . today the rooms were a disgrace compared to the price. the staff is SUPER, they tried everything to please us and we got some reduction i nthe rate. the dinner was EXCELLENT . the lounges bar, library etc are magnificent, just hope they will stay. and so is the golf house staff . we will be back given that the house is gorgeous, to see after end 2018 what the new hotel will be like
Very attentive staff with beautiful food. The welcome was good with offers of help and ensuring that your room was to your liking. Explaining where necessary all the services and facilities available.
Food was delicious and choices were satisfying and used local resources. Lovely place for a quiet celebration.
We arrived at the tail end of a winter storm (the Beast from the East) to find that we were the only guests staying that evening. Having traveled from Newcastle we appreciated the hotel staying open and the hospitality offered by the all of the staff on duty. As always we enjoyed our 2 day stay and loved the food.
Once again, a very big thank you to all of the staff.
