Style Over Substance..?!

An 'average' view is a little harsh but I post it because I want it to be considered.
I stopped here for 3 nights and had mixed feelings. The booking didn't get off to a great start when I had to cancel one of the rooms, admittedly at short notice, but was charged full price which I understand as a businessman, but when you are trying to establish your brand why be so harsh ? especially when your rooms are being offered cheaper on the www websites and there was hardly anybody stopping at your hotel anyway...just not a good PR move I didn't think.
In summary, the investment made by the new owners is stunning and clearly part of a long term view as they are losing money hand over fist with only 20 rooms. The payback will clearly come when they build the extension and spa, etc.
In the meantime, given that this place apparently opened in June, the standard of service should be better.
The owners have obviously decided that the direction of travel for all hotels in Scotland should be to model themselves on Gleneagles and whilst it is commendable to aim so high, the staff training at Gleneagles would put this to shame. I loved the fact that the staff were mostly local but they still need to be trained in the ways of a 5 star establishment.
The bedroom and bathroom was truly excellent from the comfort of the bed to the soundproofing to the quality of the shower and the accommodation cannot be faulted.
However, the restaurant offering was poor, such that on the second and third nights of my stay I took a trip into Kelso to eat there instead.
My taxi driver told me that he takes a lot of the hotel guests into town to eat in the evening which speaks volumes.
The table for 2 was too small and the staff - bless 'em - just didn't know whether they were coming or going....on the first night, when I was served a glass of cold red wine, and I mean really cold, I asked if this was the way this particular wine was always served..?..the 'bonnie wee lassie' explained "no.. its just the part of the kitchen where the wine glasses are kept is absolutely freezing"... !!
The food was also pretty poor in truth - if you cant pull off Michelin star type stuff, you're better off doing more simple stuff and just doing it really well surely..?
So, sort out the food and train the staff properly which will require another investment on the part of the owners rather than assuming that a boss dropping in from Germany every few weeks or employing one manager with hotel experience will get it sorted - it wont.

Amazing Location!

I was spending 2 days at Schloss Roxburghe for a business trip. As soon as you arrive at the location it looks like you’re entering a whole different world. It’s like a farytail! Amazing services and kind people. Would absolutely go there again!!!

Thank you

Many thanks to all the staff at the Roxburghe for making our visit this weekend so enjoyable. The hotel has been beautifully refurbished since our last visit making it a really special designation for the Borders. Our dinner and breakfast were both first class and the staff put themselves out to make our stay very special. A real treat!
