How to Get There
This hotel was highly rated but fell short on nearly every aspect. Service and staff were lacking. The hotel has been expanded over the years and is cut up like a mouse maze. Rooms were very small and bathrooms tiny. It is listed as an airport hotel but they offer no airport shuttle. The hotel was not wheelchair friendly. Breakfast buffet was good but limited. Dinner was good food but service slow and lacking. Setting is near airport but rural and peaceful. I would not recommend this hotel.
In need of a relaxing weekend away and having heard many amazing things about this hotel and we were not disappointed.
We arrived earlier than expected on the Friday and were able to check into our room straight away. The rooms were stunning and very clean. And for being close by to Edinburgh airport, we hardly heard a peep from them.
After a wander around the grounds, we headed back into the hotel bar area for a spot of lunch. The food was delicious, we couldn't fault any of it during our stay.
All of the staff we met over our 2 night stay were very friendly and polite without being too intrusive.
Although we were close by to the city, we opted for a quiet break away and dined at the hotel on both evenings. After dinner each night, we were able to have a few cocktails in the bar lounge area - as did many other hotel guests. I'd highly recommend a Bramble from their extensive cocktail menu.
As the weather was not too nice on the Saturday, we spent a few hours in the pool/spa area. The member of staff that greeted us at the Spa was most pleasant and ever smiling - very rare in the hospitality world!
On the Sunday morning, we didn't want to leave. We had such a lovely relaxing weekend away. Thank you Norton House, keep up the great work!
The Hotel itself is in a fantastic location - easy access to Edinburgh airport and Trams (to the city centre). Yet, despite this it is also far enough from the main road so that you hear no road noise and cannot tell you are near a city at all.
In addition to this, the Spa facilities were again excellently maintained- with a lovely swimming pool, Steam room, Sauna and hot pool. Once more, the gym was also ample, with enough to get by on a stop over (it had good Cardio machines, ok dumbbells up to 32kgs, cables and few resistance machines).
However, it was the food which stole the show! We booked to eat at ‘The Brasserie’ in the evening and were extremely pleasantly surprised! The menu was not particularly extensive but everything was cooked fantastically and the service was friendly yet efficient. Furthermore, this carried through to the morning where the breakfast (which is complementary for hotel guests). The breakfast provided cereals and buffet style cooked breakfast, which was supplemented by choice off a speciality menu (as pictured).
We stayed for 2 nights and had the option of an Executive Room - this room had a longer 'hall' from the front door to the bed area - so the bathroom is a bit more away from the bed. The room also has a balcony that opens up - no chairs. But the bed was narrow and the TV smaller than the Classic Room we ended up being in for 2 nights. The bed in room 104 was at least king-size, a large TV, 2 sitting chairs with a table in the middle. The extra bed made up for the smaller floor space and overall this was a very nice room for 2 adults for 2 nights. Being away from the front reception area, and the rooms where weddings are held - this was at the end of a hall and very quiet. The bed was soft and the bedding was very comfortable. Good breakfast buffet - fruits, smoothies, juices, breads/pastries, egg options, bacon, sausage, beans, tomato, mushrooms, etc. Very friendly service. The best scones - fresh and warm; a 3.00 order includes 2 smaller scones (plain and fruit) with jam and cream (best cream I've had.) I would absolutely recommend this hotel but be careful of your room location - friends were in a room that was noisy due to wedding party attendees running up/down the hall and then congregating outside their window by a swing to smoke/hang out. This is not within walking distance to Edinburgh - you are within 5-minutes from the airport (we didn't hear the planes from our room but you could from some of the balcony rooms.) They offer hand soap, body lotion, shampoo, and shower/body gel. If you need conditioner for your hair - for all the hotels we stayed - bring your own. Also bring your own face soap if you have sensitive skin (dry.)
Absolutely fabulous overnight stay here. The spa facility's were great and the room was so nice. we had dinner which was lovely we both really enjoyed the food and the drinks of course. Pat who served us that night was brilliant in fact all the staff are a credit to this hotel. we will be back. Outstanding
