On a hill overlooking the Sarawak River, the five-star Pullman Kuching has been a luxe landmark since it opened in 2009. Behind the imposing white façade, the 389 guestrooms are decked out in a soothing lilac and mint color scheme, with sleek wood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out at the skyline. Take a dip in the outdoor lap pool or relax with a glass of champagne at Déjà Vu, a lounge bar dotted with dramatic artworks in the glass-vaulted marble lobby. The hotel’s poolside bar, Liquid, is a laid-back spot where guest DJs play until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Tuck into homemade pastries at Café Chat, Asian and Western fare at Puzzle, or authentic Chinese cuisine at Nu Er Hong. The Fit and Spa Lounge features a sauna, a steam room and hot and cold plunge pools, and offers a range of traditional massages and reflexology treatments.
In the Area
Studded with temples, bazaars, restaurants and bars, the city of Kuching is relatively small and easy to navigate. And the Pullman Kuching’s hilltop location could not be more central. The hotel is within walking distance of the waterfront’s bustling esplanade, where you’ll find an array of market stalls and riverside restaurants. Hop a sampan (river taxi) and look out for the colorful local fishing fleets that chug along this section of the river. Local highlights include Semenggoh Wildlife Center, an impressive orangutan reserve, and Sarawak Cultural Village, an outdoor museum that showcases the traditional houses of the indigenous people of Sarawak; check out the dance show at 11 a.m. on weekdays.
How to Get There
We stayed 5 nights at the Pullman, and found the stay to be underwhelming. Very few of the staff were friendly and on more than one occassion we were made to feel an inconvenience. Unfortunately this experience started at check in and continued through our stay. Whilst the hotel is well serviced with amenities, you get the impression that the hotel's focus is on their business and function centre rather than their hotel guests. We found the entire hotel not clean enough, from our room, to the communal areas. Finding staff around the pool/gym was near impossible. Breakfast was not included with oue booking and we found paying for breakfast expensive given the offerings, so we choose to eat out.
Most disturbing was that we seemed to be monitored when returning to our room. We ordered a drink for by the pool and had no cash to pay for it at the time. We arranged with staff to pay later, but received a call from reception within 1 minute of getting back to our room to pay for our drinks. On a separate occasion we had an outstanding bill and we then received multiple calls to remind us to pay on returning to our room. There seemed to be no capacity to charge anything to our room to settle on check out. These experiences were very uncomfortable.
The saviour of this trip was the hotel location. Right in the centre of Kuching, meaning we could walk to most places.
Overall our stay at Kuching Pullman hotel was disappointing given that they state it is a 5 star hotel.
On our arrival the room was not clean, with stains on the furnishings and rust around the shower unit. The hallway outside the room had not been hoovered and smelt musty. The TV was old with a poor picture and no access to Netflix or YouTube which is a shame. We expected this of a 5star hotel and this needs to be upgraded. Our bathroom had no soap or shampoo/ conditioner until we asked, then they did supply these items.
We visited Bako national park and stayed over the following night. When we returned after complaining they upgraded us to a bigger room, which we appreciated.
We had a nice view of the city from the 17th floor. The bed was very comfortable and large. The minibar was empty in both rooms we stayed in.
The buffet breakfast was varied. But lacking in signs stating what is vegetarian . On our last day we left early to catch a flight and were told that they don’t start making the eggs until 6.30 which was a shame. The beans and hash browns were often cold. Nice pastries and fruit selection.
We almost had our clothes laundered at the hotel until we realised how expensive this was. 6 ringgit for one pair of underwear ! So we went next door to Mr Clean and had it all laundered by kg. Much cheaper.
The swimming pool was large and clean with nice loungers and a cold jacuzzi . Big one !
The location was ideal right in the middle of the city and easy walking distance to main attractions.
Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Pullman in Kuching however we felt that the rooms needed updating and refurbishing , something that has been mentioned in previous reviews but has clearly not taken place yet.
It is not worth the high price we paid and compared to other hotels we have stayed in in SE Asia this one falls behind the high standard. We would recommend staying somewhere else.
Also the staff were not very welcoming on the whole. At breakfast we were were asked our room number but nobody said good morning to us. On checking in and out the staff were not very welcoming and not very chatty. Never asked us about our stay. Nobody was rude but the staff were not very smiling or welcoming. Maybe they’re not very happy , need to be paid more !
As an Accor member, my 1st time stay where I was not offered a welcome drink.
The fruit basket in my room was also missing, as per in previous visits.
that put a damper in my stay..
Hopefully these can be rectified and improved in my future stay.
