Overview

Towering five-star property on the banks of Kuching’s Sarawak River, with an outdoor pool and hot tub

The Lowdown

On a hill overlooking the Sarawak River, the five-star Pullman Kuching has been a luxe landmark since it opened in 2009. Behind the imposing white façade, the 389 guestrooms are decked out in a soothing lilac and mint color scheme, with sleek wood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out at the skyline. Take a dip in the outdoor lap pool or relax with a glass of champagne at Déjà Vu, a lounge bar dotted with dramatic artworks in the glass-vaulted marble lobby. The hotel’s poolside bar, Liquid, is a laid-back spot where guest DJs play until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Tuck into homemade pastries at Café Chat, Asian and Western fare at Puzzle, or authentic Chinese cuisine at Nu Er Hong. The Fit and Spa Lounge features a sauna, a steam room and hot and cold plunge pools, and offers a range of traditional massages and reflexology treatments.

In the Area

Studded with temples, bazaars, restaurants and bars, the city of Kuching is relatively small and easy to navigate. And the Pullman Kuching’s hilltop location could not be more central. The hotel is within walking distance of the waterfront’s bustling esplanade, where you’ll find an array of market stalls and riverside restaurants. Hop a sampan (river taxi) and look out for the colorful local fishing fleets that chug along this section of the river. Local highlights include Semenggoh Wildlife Center, an impressive orangutan reserve, and Sarawak Cultural Village, an outdoor museum that showcases the traditional houses of the indigenous people of Sarawak; check out the dance show at 11 a.m. on weekdays.

We stayed for 8 nights. I would recommend this hotel if you are traveling with kids. The family room is spacious and big enough. Parking is a breeze and direct access to the hotel. Location is perfect with easy access to different part of the city. Overall good stay with very friendly and helpful staff. Our thanks to Ms Rebecca, Mr Jack and staff for making our stay a memorable one.

Not a 5 star hotel

We stayed at the Pullman Kuching on a friends recommendation that Pullman hotels are very good. We had travelled from Kuala Lumpur having stayed at another 5 star hotel. The two really could not be compared.

On the positive side, the room was spacious (Deluxe Room King Size bed), and the bed was really comfortable! TV had a selection of channels, fresh bottled water and newspaper was provided everyday. Basic toiletries were available, hair dryer and ironing board.

The hotel is in a relatively good location. 5 minutes walk from the water front, above a shopping mall and other restaurants and bars nearby.

So now the negatives and this will be long!
Building works in the foyer which we were not informed of and disrupted any tranquil bar / cafe time as right beside it.
The bar was like sitting in a waiting area / lobby area with no atmosphere at all.
The swimming pool was dirty and guests were swimming in shorts and t-shirts at times.
There was a pool bar but it was NEVER open and the pool attendant was rarely there. We had to request drinks once the attendant was there by going up to his desk and then wait for these to be brought up from the downstairs bar! There was no.po service at all.
We had bed and breakfast during our stay and the breakfast was 2 star at the most. Never any eggs, food was cold that was meant yo be hot, the coffee machine was not maintained at all. We gave up on the last morning and did not bother.

We did not eat in the evenings as the hotel catered more for outside guests and was extremely busy with large table and buffet food.

Fortunately our stay was just a base for all the activities we wanted to do whilst in Kuching. However the hotel itself is not one I would ever recommend and would even suggest the Hilton which is right on the water front.

Enjoyed the stay at Pullman

Lovely stay. Love the room with an excellent city view. Service was good. Posters were friendly and eager to serve. However, some spots of the room are pretty dusty. Chambermaid has to be more attentive, esp when she is cleaning up the toilet. For eg: 1 cup instead of 2. Wifi connection is strong. Complimentary parking. Love the massage at the spa, esp the 50% off during the early opening hours.
