What To Know
Some rooms have private terraces
São Paulo traffic is notoriously bad, so allow extra time when heading into the city
Decadent country house hotel—Brazil's own Downton Abbey—surrounded by a 26-acre park within the borders of São Paulo
It took landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx 40 years to lay out this 26-acre São Paulo estate and its collection of native Atlantic-forest species and rolling greens, and it's an oasis in every way. The building is a testament to restrained taste; never flashy, the emphasis is instead on pale yellows and grays and vintage furniture, with a few bursts of brighter colors inspired by the exotic birds in the surrounding forest. Rooms have plenty of natural light, aided by balconies, and lots of space to stretch out in, but you'll likely spend more time in a deckchair by the outdoor pool (there's another one indoors) or feasting on locally flavored sea bass ceviche with coconut, lime, and chili tapioca at Tangará Jean-Georges—Jean-Georges Vongerichten's only restaurant on the continent. Don't forget to ask the sommelier to pair your meal with some of Brazil's up-and-coming sparkling wines.
In the Area
Palácio Tangará's appeal is that it's in the city but feels like a nature retreat, so guests who've chosen to stay here are likely to spend more time lounging by the pool or strolling around the forest than wandering around the busy streets and skyscrapers of São Paulo. It's about a 30-minute walk to Chalezinho from the hotel; this intimate fondue restaurant has an Alpine-inspired look and makes for a romantic dinner spot. A 7-minute drive brings you to the Casa de Vidro (the Glass House), an exercise in modernist design by the pioneering architect Lina Bo Bardi; it's still bordered by some of the lush greenery that once surrounded it. If you want to explore the city, the hotel offers car service and the concierge can help plan your urban itinerary.
