How to Get There
Last January I spent one week at the Catolonia Hotel in Santo Domingo, DR. I usually do not stay in city hotels when going away for a week as I would prefer someplace on the ocean with a beach. However, once I had decided that I would like to visit Santo Domingo because of its historical significance, this became my hotel of choice. And it was not a mistake. I decided to book an ocean front room rather than an ocean view room. When you enter the room the far wall is all window and you gaze out upon a fabulous view of the ocean. When you awake in the morning and open your eyes, you similarly are staring at a brilliant sun shining off the ocean. On the fourth level (?) is a fairly expansive pool also overlooking the ocean with a poolside bar for refreshments. A great place to enjoy the hot sun and warm ocean breeze while spending some time reading.
The restaurant is one floor below and offers an ocean view and is attached to a large terrace-style bar overlooking the water. The bar and restaurant service was reasonable as were the prices, considering you are staying good quality hotel in a major Caribbean city. The population of greater Santo Domingo is approximately 4 million.
A $10 taxi ride away is the Colonial Zone which is the first city in the "new world" and was the jumping off point for Columbus and other Spanish explorers. The architecture is original and fabulous if you appreciate that sort of thing.
Because of my enjoyment at this Catalonia location I will be staying at a Catalonia resort in Punta Cana in approximately one month. Hopefully I will be able to report the same level of satisfaction.
PS I also found an excellent taxi driver who speaks English fluently and has proven to be dependable even when I am not on site there. If you require someone do not hesitate to contact me.
Definitely recommend the hotel and the spa with Teresa was fantastic. Every time I travel to Dominican Republic I stay in this hotel. Erickson and Manuel always manage to keep the areas clean. A must stay!
My coworkers and I had a great time at the Sheraton Santo Domingo. The experience from breakfast to just relaxing by the pool was just amazing. Thank you Juan Vicente, Juan Carlos, Edwin Omar, Luis Cepeda for making our experience that much better!
