Contemporary California charm in a Spanish Colonial shell in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara
The Canary Hotel fits right in with the Spanish Colonial streetscape that dates all the way back to Santa Barbara’s late-18th-century mission. The lobby and restaurant are awash with terra-cotta flooring, stucco and colorful tile walls, and the hallways are done up in teal grass wall coverings and framed ikat tapestries. The Canary is part of the Kimpton group of hotels, which is known for its cheerful design, sense of humor and friendly, can-do staff, who you'll meet over nightly lobby wine hour.
Bed and Bath
The mission motif continues in the 97 guestrooms. Think cushy four-poster canopy beds (with Frette linens), dark wood furniture and geometric rugs on hardwood floors. Yet the rooms are fully up to date, with amenities that are both practical (WiFi, plasma TVs, DVD players) and fanciful (binoculars for birdwatching, plush bathrobes in animal patterns, yoga mats and goldfish in a bowl on request). The colorfully tiled bathrooms feature rainfall showers and bamboo-scented bath products by Lather of Pasadena.
The rooftop pool deck offers Instagram-worthy views, particularly as the sun rises over the ocean or sets over the city. The in-house Finch & Fork restaurant highlights the region’s wines and agricultural bounty: farm-to-table takes on small plates, kale salads, flatbreads and grilled dishes like sea bass with sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts and citrus hollandaise. For breakfast, California-inspired items (egg white or chicken and poblano omelets, huevos rancheros) accompany all-American fare. Work it off in the pool, or by using the free pass to the large gym just steps away. In-room spa services are also available.
In the Area
There are nearly 250 wineries in the area, and it’s virtually impossible to spend time in Santa Barbara without a day of playing Sideways in the city’s tasting rooms. Standouts include Au Bon Climat, which has been making subtle pinot noirs for 25 years, and Kunin, known for producing small lots of Rhone-style wines. There’s also an impressive culinary scene, populated by straight-ahead neighborhood restaurants like the Hungry Cat, where seafood and a raw bar dominate the menu. Work it off by biking or walking along Butterfly Beach.
