How to Get There
I’ve heard so many good things about Avila LaFonda and I’ve wanted to stay here for several years. I was excited when we finally got to make it happen. We booked through Costco asking for a room with a fireplace and a balcony. I spoke to a woman on the phone who said she would note our request on our reservation.
The property is gorgeous with a Spanish ambiance, and it was lavishly decorated for the fall season. We were given a lovely gift upon check- in, and directed to our room on the first floor. I’ll first share the positives and then I’ll share reasons we were disappointed we invested almost $1K for three nights here.
Things we liked: The location is one block from the beach and we loved being near so many popular places to eat and relax. The room was sparkling clean, the bed was comfortable, the linens were nice, and the towels were lush and smelled good. The four food receptions each day were delicious and our hearts were especially warmed by the aroma of butter or chocolate croissants wafting down the hallway each morning. The TV was large, there was a Keurig in the room, a big basket of free snacks, the shower and whirlpool tub were both wonderful. The staff were friendly and worked extremely hard.
Things we didn’t like: Our request for a balcony was not honored and there was no explanation. We were randomly assigned a room with no balcony. Avila was experiencing a heat wave, and the hotel does not have central air. There was a portable unit with an ugly hose vented to the outside hiding behind the drape; but it had not been turned on and the room was extremely warm. The fireplace was emitting heat which made the room even hotter. It would have been nice to have been advised at the front desk that our request wasn’t granted. I think at this point we would have asked for our money back and gone somewhere else.
Additionally the sink in the bathroom drained so slow, and there was no sheer behind the thick, crookedly hung drapery with no pull rod— making it difficult for ventilation and privacy. Perhaps we had been assigned a pet-friendly room and a pet pulled the sheer down. Whatever the reason, I was extremely unhappy with paying good money— money for a four
star hotel; yet dealing with a hot room, loud, inefficient, ugly cumbersome air conditioner, slow sink and forced to sit in a dark room so people on the street couldn’t look in. I’d like to see this hotel invest some of their profits in making some needed updates to meet guest expectations.
Thankfully the beds were comfy, the staff was friendly, the decor was lovely, the food was generous and delicious and the weather cooled so our initial problems somewhat dissipated... We talked over our concerns at check out; and they expressed an openness to hear us. We came home happy; but feel next time we consider Avila LaFonda, we will have very specific requests. If those requests can’t be honored, we will invest our money in a property that can meet our expectations of proper communication, ventilation and sunlight.
Love this place! Came here after being treated poorly at Avila Lighthouse Suites and enjoyed our stay so much I’m coming back with a few friends next month! Thank you to the employees for being so professional and kind. Beautiful location too!
Located in Avila Beach (the cutest little beach town), Avila la Fonda hotel is an excellent hotel. The rooms and public areas are nicely appointed and comfortable. The bed is very comfortable. From the basket of snacks and drinks in the room, to the snacks (cookies, nuts, fruit) provided 24/7 in the lounge, to the breakfast croissants, lunch time nachos, evening wine reception, pies and ice cream at night, our tummies were very happy. Although the atmosphere is most suited for adults, this is not a pretentious place. This is a very casual and friendly place. Rate discounts are offered for Costco members and sales are offered throughout the year. I've been here many times. Love it!
