How to Get There
We love staying here on what is called the back bay of Morro Bay. While the town of Morro Bay has motels and inns aplenty, Los Osos has this one beautiful spot and one other across the street. We love the quiet, the fact that the Inn is really on the bay and as the tide comes in and out, you can see a variety of birds right from your room. The rooms are simple, but comfortable. We began taking our little poodle mix dog, Bernie, just this past September and took him again in January. There are a limited number of dog-friendly rooms, though, and thus you need to make a reservation well advance of your trip. Breakfast at the cafe is always good. We will be going back to the Back Bay Inn over and over again.
What a little treasure tucked right up against the water. The room was lovely, a renovation from probably an old (50's-60's?) hotel. The complimentary hot breakfast is more than....more than what is usually offered and very good. But truly the 'take me back' aspect of Back Bay Inn is it's location. Open your door in the morning to the serene scene of the still water while locals quietly paddle away into the bay. I walked to the Elfin Forest which is easily accessible also by car. Bring your binoculars because from there the birdwatching is a treat. We weren't there long enough to enjoy the other outdoor amenities but we will return! I'd recommend bringing a paddle board, kayak, or canoe since the Inn doesn't have them available. The staff is accomodating, knowledgeable, and gracious.
This is a lovely family owned business right on quiet waterfront at Baywood Park/Los Osos. There is a great restaurant adjoining called the Blue Heron and breakfast and lunch can be had at the Back Bay cafe. A voucher is provided for a delicious breakfast there. The gardens are lovely to walk in with hummingbirds and Monarchs in season.
There is a small wine reception every afternoon also, and there are some dog friendly rooms. Many great places to eat and stroll are nearby. The Sweet Springs reserve is a short walk away.
Pictures are of views from the room and boardwalk that runs a few feet from your doorstep!
Barbara and I stayed in the ADA room in the main building with the most wonderous view of the water and experience of the tides. Loved the early morning fog, birds and sounds. A bonus are the local residents who walk the coastal access trail and fill you in on everything, natural and human history. Bathroom and space in room, top notch. View of bay from the bed was perfect. Service and staff worked well--just pleasant all the way around.
This is the second time we have visited Los Osos and stayed at the Back Bay Inn, and our visit this time was just as nice as the first. This small Inn has wonderful grounds right on the water, great for walking, relaxing for the sunset, and bird watching. Both times we stayed in a room that had a kitchen which was great for storage (traveling with kiddos) of extra food items. Room stay comes with breakfast at the Back Bay Café which is delicious - try the frittata if they have it! - and they do a fun little wine reception in the afternoon with snacks. The rooms are a bit dated, but still comfy and spacious. Highly recommend for a quiet stay off the touristy path of Hwy 1.
