Boho-chic, tech-savvy newcomer in SF's Theater District featuring eye-catching modern art, a trendy café, and arcade games
The vibe at this 196-room hotel is distinctly rock n’ roll—with a dose of Wonderland thrown in. Hand-painted ceiling murals, an oversized peace sign, a record player in almost every room (records are borrowed from the vinyl library)—the hotel has created a clever homage to San Francisco’s history while keeping things up to date with plenty of charging ports, big-screen TVs, and Nespresso machines. Rooms also feature maple wood John Boos butcher-block desks and blackout curtains. Downstairs in the Den, there’s indoor basketball, shuffleboard, and foosball, though those more serious about fitness can get in a good workout at the gym. The private media room is available to book to for private movie screenings, while the Rambler restaurant does well by its modern California cuisine—think fromage blanc gnocchi with celery root and parmesan broth and wood-fired pizzas cooked in Wolfgang Puck’s pizza oven (the chef’s Postrio restaurant used to occupy the space).
In the Area
There’s a surfeit of San Francisco attractions within walking distance of the Zeppelin. Chinatown (the oldest in the United States) is just a few blocks away; try the legendary House of Nanking for cold sesame noodles and potstickers—but be prepared to wait in line. Union Square, with its dense collection of shops, is just a three-minute walk from the hotel. Late-night drinks should be had at CoCoBang, which blasts Asian pop music and serves up Korean snacks and soju cocktails, or at Bitters, Bock & Rye, which has a great beer list and good-value-for-SF cocktails. Recover with breakfast at Honey Honey Café, which turns out sweet and savory crepes laden with fruit, Nutella, ham, and cheese.
