Biz traveler fave on the waterfront with killer views, a pool party scene and firepits
A landmark along the bay, the Grand Hyatt is the largest waterfront hotel on the West Coast. The eclectic design ranges from huge European-style pastoral murals in the lobby to the minimalist modern decor of guestrooms. September through May, business and convention guests dominate, but summer draws a steady stream of vacationing visitors.
Bed & Bath
Minimalist modern decor gives rooms a hip, 21st-century vibe with a mélange of gray, beige and white fabrics set against dark wood and leather. Abstract paintings add a dash of color, but your eyes will always drift to the brilliant bay and city views beyond the windows. Other perks? A laptop-size safe, an iPod dock and a fridge for stocking your own drinks. The bathrooms are spacious, in particular a shower that’s easily big enough for two, and stocked with June Jacobs Spa Collection amenities.
One of the pluses of a hotel this size is the range of restaurants to try. Sip cocktails with sunset views from the Top of the Hyatt, on the 40th floor. Redfield’s Sports Lounge offers a great selection of local craft beers (Stone, Coronado, Mission), but skip the food; dine instead at Sally’s on the Water, an excellent seafood spot with outdoor tables overlooking a superyacht marina. In addition to the large outdoor pool, health and wellness options include bike rentals, a fitness center and Kin Spa with locally flavored treatments like the Baja & Beyond Body Wrap.
In the Area
The Grand Hyatt’s strategic location allows guests to pick their poison. Right across the street is the raucous Gaslamp District with its trendy dance clubs, bars and sidewalk cafés. Out back is a long waterfront promenade popular with joggers, walkers and daydreamers. Nearby Seaport Village offers a cluster of restaurants and quirky one-off shops. Farther down along the waterfront are the USS Midway aircraft carrier museum and the San Diego Maritime Museum and its collection of vintage vessels (including the Star of India clipper ship and a Soviet Cold War–era submarine). Also within walking distance are the Horton Plaza shopping mall and Petco Park, where the San Diego Padres play. The iconic red trolley (board directly across the street from the hotel) leads to Mission Valley and all the way down to the Mexican border. Or hop a ferry over to Coronado island.
