A lively Gaslamp Quarter escape known for relaxed service and a cool bar scene
This hotel knows how to make an entrance. Its soaring lobby is a please-touch welcome of buttery leather–covered columns, an edgy wall-length mural and mod loungers, all presided over by a Vogue-worthy staff. They kick things up a notch in the sultry rooftop bar — a communal firepit and cabanas that invite bad behavior silhouetted against glittering skyline views. With no stuffy uniforms and no front desk to speak of, the experience is more like being greeted by an old friend — an old friend who happens to look as if she belongs in a Vogue spread.
Bed & Bath
Sophisticated yet sleek, the 159 guestrooms come in creamy whites and chocolate-browns, with custom features in warm woods. The aesthetic balances modern design (think glass and steel tables and white sofas) with warmth and comfort. Expansive windows overlooking the Gaslamp Quarter add a good dose of natural light. Exhibitionist bathrooms have glass walls open to the bedrooms, along with rain showers and built-in speaker systems, ideal for pumping some jams while getting ready for a night out.
Bikinis and sunglasses replace cocktail dresses and stilettos at Andaz's rooftop bar, RoofTop600, a haven of private, secluded cabanas. Downstairs is the Andaz Wine Bar, which offers some 88 vintages by the glass.
In the Area
Andaz San Diego is located in the lively Gaslamp Quarter, within walking distance of the city’s trendiest galleries, boutiques and restaurants. Soak up some culture at the Museum of Contemporary Art, housed in a former rail depot downtown. Animal lovers can spend the day with gorillas, giraffes and bears at the famous San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, while golf enthusiasts hit the green at Torrey Pines Golf Course, a clifftop course that looks out over the Pacific. At the end of a busy day, peckish guests should take on the Noble Experiment, a gastropub speakeasy backed by bartender Sam Ross, formerly of NYC’s Milk and Honey.
