Urban-chic sleep with a terrace pool bar in the heart of San Diego’s bustling Gaslamp Quarter
The Solamar's brick exterior gives way to a contemporary lobby with dark, sultry furnishings and aquatic-themed decor. But the subdued colors and nightclub mood in the lobby don't reflect the vibe of the rooms; all 235 of them are notably lighter and brighter, and the colorful rooftop pool and bar terrace offers expansive city views.
Bed and Bath
Rooms with downtown views (some of which look into Petco Park) are decorated in a chocolate and pale blue color scheme, alongside polka-dot throws and striped blackout curtains. But at the Solamar, no comfort is left behind. Expect plush upholstery, an array of pillow options, in-room yoga mats, crisp white Frette linens, and an alarm clock/radio/iPod dock with built-in “Bedtime Beats” and “Nature Sounds." Spacious bathrooms are decorated in seashore colors and white tiles, and all come with glass-walled showers and plenty of Gilchrist & Soames bath products.
In a part of town where real estate comes at a premium, the rooftop outdoor bar/lounge feels like an oasis, with its small pool, private cabanas and chaise longues. It's a hot spot for happy hour, occasional live music a late night tête-à-tête — order a drink and some nibbles off the bar menu or just enjoy the downtown views and the glow from the firepits. The hotel's cavernous ground-floor restaurant/bar, Jsix, features an eclectic design, with glass light fixtures up in a vaulted ceiling, and it earns kudos for its farm-to-table cuisine.
In the Area
Comic Con, the famous comic book convention, and other events take place at the nearby Convention Center (three blocks away); San Diego Padres games and other sports events at Petco Park, just across the street. (In fact, sports fans park at the hotel for games.) The Gaslamp Quarter is a mix of tawdry and trendy, with dozens of restaurants and bars. Be sure to check out La Gran Tapa, a small bodega (about six blocks away, with free parking) that features live Latin music and tapas evocative of Spain and is less hectic than the nightclub scene. If you're looking for a fun half-day trip, the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park, the waterfront or even the trolley to Tijuana all make for a fun mini-getaway.
