Overview

A true slice of Austria at this historic family-run hotel on the banks of the River Salzach
The Lowdown
Located right on the banks of the River Salzach, Hotel Sacher’s rich history is evident in its décor: Think intricately carved dark wood ceilings, silk-lined walls, ornate fabrics and marble bathrooms. It has a quite a roll call of celebrity guests as everyone from Tom Hanks to the Dalai Lama has bedded down in one of the 113 elegant rooms and suites. Gastronomes will be spoilt for choice with no fewer than six options for dining and imbibing, from traditional Austrian cuisine at the Roter Salon to the elegant Sacher café with its legendary Sacher Torte.
In the Area
Hike the Mönchsberg Hill to visit the newish Museum der Moderne Salzburg, for both the art and the views. The Baroque Basilica of Maria Plain attracts many pilgrims, as well as visitors seeking the stunning view over Salzburg and the valley. Visit the Salzkammergut area (aka the Lake District) for hiking. Dine at Ikarus, a modern restaurant located in Hangar-7 (the private hangar of the creator of Red Bull). Each month a new guest chef fashions an entirely new menu. Mozart had his coffee at Tomaselli, the city’s oldest café, and so should you.
