Luxurious Caribbean stalwart near sleepy Cruz Bay, with seven white sand beaches spread across 170 pristine acres
Opened in 1956 by ecotourism pioneer Laurance Rockefeller, Caneel Bay is the only resort in St. John within the boundaries of Virgin Islands National Park. With 166 rooms spread across 170 lush acres, it’s easy to forget you’re at a luxury resort. After all, its low-key cottages blend seamlessly into the natural environment, and many are adjacent to one of seven private white sand beaches on the property.
Bed and Bath
You won’t find modern amenities such as televisions or telephones in Caneel Bay’s rooms — for an early rise you can request a wakeup knock in lieu of a call — but that lack is meant to showcase the resort’s main attraction: nature. The simple rooms feature stone walls, island-inspired artwork and large private patios. All rooms have AC, but to live like a local, open your windows and let the Caribbean breeze blow.
With five on-site dining options, you won’t have to go far for a great meal. The open-air Caneel Beach Terrace and Caneel Beach Bar & Grill are perfect for families, and Turtle Bay Estate House is fine dining at its best. But for a taste of the Caribbean, book a table at ZoZo's at the Sugar Mill. Perched atop the ruins of an 18th-century sugar mill, with sweeping views of St. Thomas and the British Virgin Islands, the restaurant serves Northern Italian fare with local fish and island grown produce. End your evening with homemade gelato at the quaint cafe Cannella, which also serves sandwiches, coffee, smoothies and other snacks throughout the day. The free kids club for children three to 12 makes it easy for parents to unwind with a treatment in the massage cabana overlooking the ocean, hit the tennis courts or just relax by the pool.
