How to Get There
We recently stayed at the villas at Half Moon resort in Montego Bay. We were a group of 10 adults and 2 toddlers. We stayed in Villa 88/Red Ginger (garden view) and we had a phenomenal time.
This property superbly fit the bill for our family business retreat. We were traveling to have some fun but also have a retreat outside of our office where we could address topics related to our multi generational family company. This was the perfect setting.
Our villa was 6 bedrooms, 6 baths so everyone had their own "master suite" - the rooms varied in size but all were comfortable and the staff was very accommodating to assist with sleeping arrangements for our toddler grandsons. There was a very comfortable common room (with large flatscreen TV) with two couches and two oversize chairs. That along with the tables on the pool deck provided great spaced to meet, relax and play games in the evening.
The staff in our villa definitely made the trip! Dexton (our butler) and Debbie (chef extraordinaire) along with the housekeeper were phenomenal. They catered to our every need. There was no need to eat out (but we did) as Debbie provided outstanding local cuisine while meeting some strict food restrictions (including gluten, soy and dairy free). When we return we will insist on the same crew!
The rest of the property was fabulous. The gym is large, well kept and has modern working equipment. We all had excellent massages at the same price we pay at home! The beach was wonderful and very clean and well kept - the staff was always raking any debris the came in from the ocean, servers walked around all day passing out complimentary water, fruit smoothies and fresh fruit. There is a really nice "grill" for lunch on the beach. The servers will also serve you something to eat or a drink at your seat on the beach. There's also plenty of shade on the beach if you prefer that.
We ate at the beach bbq which was really fun with live music and other entertainment. Food was very good - lots of Jamaican fare. We also ate at the Sugar Mill - the ambiance and service was very nice but we felt it a bit overpriced.
There are many other options on this property including first class tennis, horse back riding, a sprawling playground, multiple pools, golf and even a vegan cafe! For those in our party who liked to hit the sack early we did that and the night owls simply took the one of the golf carts and went back to one of the bars at the main hotel to hang out.
I would agree with some of the other reviews that the furnishings in the villas are a bit tired and could use a bit of a face lift (it's my understanding that that is in the works). That being said, the staff kept out villa immaculately clean and it was certainly comfortable for our needs. Our villa staff were incredibly sweet, patient and accomodating with our grandchildren. Dexton and Debbie went well above and beyond; everyone staff member we met were incredibly friendly.
We will definitely be back in 2020!
We were a family of nine ranging from age sixty-one to nine months. From the moment we landed, to the send off breakfast things couldn't of been more perfect. Kirk, our butler, went above and beyond to make sure every need was taken care of. Karen, our chef, prepared both traditional Jamaican flare to simple scrambled eggs for the children. Our maid, Cadilla, made sure our rooms were comfortable and clean and she even washed and folded our clothes! Our private staff made sure our families time together was special, taking care of everything we needed or wanted. It is hard to find villas that can accommodate large families, and have all the amenities of the hotel. It was a perfect combination. I would definitely return to these hidden gems and request the same team. Saying goodbye was hard because they were like part of our family!
Our family is spending the year-end holidays at the villas. Pluses- an outstanding staff of three who have taken care of every single need, even before we had to ask; outstanding meals; a quiet oasis from the rest of the resort which is understandably crowded at this time of year; a cost effective option for a family instead of having to buy all meals and drinks at the hotel: Ample opportunity for family bonding, but nice to have private en-suite bedrooms; Access to hotel facilities. Minuses- the villas are tired and in need of meaningful updates. The tile floors are cracked and repaired; the bathrooms are dated; the patio around the pool needs re-doing. The wrought iron furniture is old and has been repainted numerous times. The common areas have a combination of nice and old furniture. I am probably sounding very critical, which is not my intent. We are having a wonderful time, but the villas need to be brought up to 5* 2018 standards. The price demands it; and the current staff are already 5*.
Stayed in a villa with 7 other friends - a few couples and a few singles. The decor is classic Caribbean, the Villa felt like home, and the amenities cannot be beat. But easily the best part of the experience is the full service Staff! Vinton, our butler, took care of our every need, from the simplest reservations to more complex requests, including taking personal trips off the resort to track down requests. Melonie, our chef, made phenomenal meals - both traditional Jamaican fare (the jerk chicken was amazing, but the curry goat was the showstopper), to simpler dishes such as chicken noodle soup when one of our guests was feeling a bit off. And Desiree, our maid, kept us comfortable and in clean clothes. They were incredible, and we’ll definitely be asking for them again the next time we return - you cannot go wrong!
Great Villa. Great time. Great resort. Best of all was our great Villa staff. If you ever stay in one of the Villas, please request our staff. Best on the island and made our stay perfect. Our butlers name was Vinton Houdham, our cook was Patricia Thompson, and our housekeeper was Paula Brown. Trust me, they are the best anywhere and Half Moon is lucky to employ them. Best week my large family ever spent together because all we had to do was eat, drink, and have fun. Everything else was thoroughly handled by our private Villa staff and they felt like part of our family. We will return soon!
