How to Get There
We were here for March break, we were here once before in December 2011 and stayed in a lanai room. (We were keeping in mind things do change)
We came in at around 8 at night (due to delays airport not hotel), we made it in about an hr and 15 mins this depends on your driver and the number of stops.
Like others we were told to sit and wait....as we watched other people who came in after us get served. No biggie we got our key and off we went.
Sapphire garden view- room was clean, shower and ac worked well, bed was comfortable but sheets were ok. Towels were nice and big. Not much room between door and shower but nice sink area and walk in closet with a safe and ironing board. Balcony was nice and big, loved the double doors and we looked out to the front of the hotel...yes roof view but didnt spend a lot of time out there. Room was clean but a bit dated and needed some repairs (toliet and door handles)....house keeping was good, had to ask for them to come one day but after that never an issue. Fridge was always restocked each day with 2 beers, pops and water.
Moonstone, we ate there twice, loved to pasta with pumpkin sauce and added the stuffed chicken to it, also like the anti pasta station and service was good as well both nights.
Platinum- wasn't as good as Moonstone, but I believe they were short staffed this night...felt bad for our waiter nice guy and did his best, food was ok...ordered pork tenderloin and got some type of flank steak?
Jade- got reservations no problem went the next morning after we got in. Our waitress was wonderful always keeping us laughing and drinks full. Our chef possibly new or in training? didnt have much to say but his food was delicious and the tuna was to die for!
Buffet- felt that it didnt really change much we ate there for lunch mostly, always able to find something just would have been nice for the stations to change a bit.
Pizza- Was good, but the types never really changed- never had to wait long here which was great!
Grill- we usually stopped here at night after drinks. Food was good but we met a wonderful guy Hakeem so happy and really loved what he does! He makes a killer jerk wrap, and a turkey club sandwich. I asked for something completely off the menu...and you should give it a try if hes there, I named it the Hot Mess!
Coffee- liked that I could get a latte and enjoy it by the ocean in the morning definitely a nice touch.
Bars- We usually tried to visit each one whether swim up, tree bar, board walk, piano. The beers were fine and did the trick just wish there was more of a choice rather than just red stripe. Martinis were good, and husband liked the white rum and cokes. We wished the servers were a little more interactive, felt like they were told not to be, or rather be on their phones. Sometimes it felt like a bother, or they would see you and serve 10 before coming back. Not that we were in a hurry we just liked to chat.
Pools- Now this could be because it was busy but the main pool was VERY dirty.....im not just talking leaves off the trees, it was murky...possibly from all the sunscreen. But by the seats at the bar it looked like dirt where your feet would go. Only saw out of the 7 days someone with a net for a short amount of time. They did top off the water on our last day. The other pool was much cleaner but had no one working that swim up bar...weird? There was ppl working the pool deck and beach area taking orders so that was great. There was cushions and chairs around the pool we never had an issue even when we came out late. Although ppl do seem to save them early, or butlers do for ppl with that service even if they dont use them.
Gym- lots of different equipment to use, good amount of weights, bars etc, even had exercises balls. There are only 2 treadmills which was a problem one day for some people. I was impressed at how well it was kept and clean, air conditioned as well.
We have traveled to a few different resorts in and out of Jamaica and we know everything isnt always perfect and things do happen, and you make your vacation what you want of it... but over all it was a great trip but this resort is in need of a face lift I think....the things that bothered us were minor, but when we get them at a sister resort and not at this one it can be annoying. For example asking to get change from front desk and getting attitude because all we want to do is tip the workers, when this was never an issue at other places we stayed. The staff do work long hours and we do want to take the time to appreciate them but its hard when they dont want to communicate back. If you are looking for a clean room, hot shower, lots of booze and not to shabby food this is the place for you.
Resort wasn’t as large as expected but was clean and well maintained. The food was always fresh and available at the buffet The same can be said with the sit down dinner service at the restaurants as well. Beach area always had available chaise lounges but would have liked more umbrellas or cabanas to get some shade.
Night life was music or entertainment but not may people out past 9:30pm. Atmosphere was casual and easy going.
We cruised into Ocho Rios and travelled to the resort using Jamaica Excursions taxi service. Everything can be prearranged. We thoughly enjoyed our "Resort Day" at the Jewell Dunn River (now a Hilton property). It as a great way to spend 5-7 hours in Jamaica rather than ship excursions that don't go beyond 3-4 hours.. The entire resort was there for us to enjoy on an "all inclusive" basis. We had some drinks, ate some snacks and enjoyed the pool and ocean. The best return came from the smiling staff who were always accomodating and ready to help. The concierge and front desk staff were some of the nicest of the nice. My wife enjoyed a massage at the SPA, which she rates as one of the best ever. The facilities were historical, interesting, and exotic with the lush shrubbery. A wonderful getaway at a very fair price.
I am going to start out with the positives and end with the negatives. What an amazing vacation we had at this facility, and can’t wait to visit again. Positives are the property is amazing, originally I thought was small but came to appreciate it the longer we were there as everything that you need is very easily accessible. We ate at all of the restaurants and the food was very good. Our room that we booked was awesome (more on this later) once we got there. The wait staff was AMAZING, tip your servers and make friends. Damian amazing bartender, George amazing waiter, Judy was so attentive to us, room service amazing, Susan came in on her day off to give my fiancé’ her full body massage, and Nadine actually stopped on her way to work to get me a local remedy for a stupidly self induced sun burn on a fishing trip. And do not miss orientation as “The Mayor” is worth the trip. The daily entertainment is awesome and I highly recommend keeping up with Crazy Kim, what a hoot she is as an MC. We met so many amazing people as it is very laid back and we made so many friends. Our concierge Deion was amazing, and all of our excursions were very enjoyable and transportation was expertly handled. I would highly recommend reserving a private cabana for a day or two.
The negatives, the check in process is abysmal!!!! You have to get rude or you will be told to take a seat and wait to be addressed. In the mean time you watch impatient people get waited on in front of you. And at our check in the front desk could not have cared less providing the customer service the wait staff provided us on this trip. We were put in a room that didn’t represent what we booked. The A/C did not work properly. Called the front desk and they sent a technician to look, he stated that we did not have it set low enough (64 degrees was where we had set), called again hours later next tech stated is working properly. Called the front desk again, said well we can put you in the room that you booked tomorrow, fully booked tonight. Once moved all was well. Check out process was ok, however had a huge problem with hotel provided transportation to the airport. Our shuttle driver was either intoxicated or incompetent to be driving a vehicle. Narrowly avoided 3 accidents, constantly missed gears and over revved the engine, and drove 40 KPH below the speed limit. Never been so glad to glad to exit a taxi service in my life.
Having said that I can’t wait to go again, but with my experience I can adjust and avoid the negatives on my next trip here. And I WILL go again.
My friend and I needed to get away from the cold, so she suggested this resort to me. At first I was hesitant as I have already been to Jamaica in Montego Bay and wanted to try going somewhere new. She told me Ocho Rios is so beautiful and insisted that we try here. We were originally supposed to go to the Riu, but then realized it was a family resort, which 2 girls trying to get some peace was not the best idea so we changed our plans to go to this hotel. Wow am I ever glad we did! At first I thought it was a little on the small side, but shortly realized how nice it was not to have to walk a million miles to get around the entire resort. We went just before March break madness so we were able to get any chair we wanted. The food was outstanding. You have to try the Japanese restaurant! What an experience but you must book a reservation as soon as you get there for this. We woke up every morning and hit the buffet where there is so many different options to choose from so every day you can have something different if you wanted. I learned that I needed sunscreen and aloe quite quickly after arriving as I am olive completion and rarely burn, but the sun is something else in Jamaica! So bring your sunscreen. Thruout the day, there is amazing live entertainment that gets the guests involved whether it's playing games, dancing, exercising, laughing and more dancing. The entertainment team is exceptional in what they do. They have everyone with a smile on their face and really makes the whole experience worth it. They really try to know you and remember your name and it's a nice touch. If there were no entertainment I think the resort wouldn't be as enjoyable if I'm being honest. As well as at night. There was a dance competition, a beach dinner party, krazy karaoke, live muscians and so much more. Cheeky was exceptional at entertaining! Always a huge smile upon his face and he even got me up off my seat to go dance (which I NEVER do). I'd say that's a huge success haha I'd say the only downfall was our check-in only because our reservation didn't seem to show up on their system, but with a few phone calls we got it cleared up. We actually enjoyed our stay so much that on our last day we decided to stay another 2 nights! It was well worth it. I'd highly recommend this place if you want some relaxation, peace, adult-only fun.
