How to Get There
This was our second visit to Jamaica. We stayed at their sister 'property Jewel Paradise Cove on our last visit and decided to visit Jewel Dunns River this time. We were not disappointed, upon arriving we were greeted with a cool towel and a refreshing drink. We were quickly taken to a private area for our check-in process. Sophia, our concierge, made our check-in a pleasure and had our butler take our luggage up to our room.
While my wife went up to the room, Sophia and I sat down to arrange a romantic dinner on the pier for my wife's birthday on Monday. Our room, 3212, was well stocked with premium liquor as well as champagne, wine, beer and soda. Our butlers, Shereen and Ludlow, were very attentive and took care of all our needs. On returning to our room on Saturday night, we were surprised to see rose petals all over our bed, some others on the floor leading to our whirlpool tub which was filled with bubbles and more rose petals. What a nice, romantic surprise set up by our butlers!
We were invited to a Honeymoon, anniversary and birthday cocktail party on Monday night where we won a poolside cabana. After the cocktail party, my wife and I proceeded to take a walk out on the pier where I surprised my wife with a romantic dinner for her birthday. Attention to detail was great from the candlelight, champagne, our rack of lamb, to the dessert. Upon returning to our room, our bed was once again adorned with rose petals and a happy birthday message from our butlers.
On Tuesday, we took advantage of our poolside cabana. Our cabana assistant, Judy, could not have been more attentive. She made sure that we always had our favorite drink and served our lunch. This couldn't have been a better way to end our stay at Jewel Dunne's River.
Yes, we would recommend this resort to others. We are looking forward to our return to Jamaica in the future.
The arrival in Kingston seemed a long way to the hotel,but a really nice driver calledJunior Brown was charming .and full of information .The hotel was great ,just a few hic ups with regard to obtaining an upgrade.All the staff were friendly and always ready to help us enjoy our time ,especially Judeen in the buffet restaurant . Aqua gym we did every day at 11.00 am which helped to keep the weight down with all the good food and cocktails especially Bob marleys!! The beach with the Hobie cats,kayaks were where we spent a lot of time as it was so relaxing ,and loungers and towels all free to use at all times. we would definiitely come back .
We visited this resort in 2016 and were impressed by the quality from food, to staff, to cleanliness, to atmosphere that it packed into a smaller space that was originally a Sandals resort. We came on a day trip from the Hilton Rose Hall back then and decided to do a week stay 2 years later.
The verdict? We were shocked by the decline, from staff attitude to food and everything in between, as well as our treatment as Hilton Diamond members. Apparently partly to blame is a change in management. The owners, Playa Resorts, are in the process of rebranding their 3 Ocho Rios area properties to Hyatt Zilara, Hyatt Ziva, and Panama Jack brands and that necessitated a complete management flip. This resort is becoming a Zilara and in, I am guessing, a passion to show owners instant return they converted hotel staff from employees to contract workers,reduced food and bar offerings as well as open hours, swapped front desk staff to trainees, and actively solicited cruise passengers for day passes. Based on our experience they also have begun to prioritize Hyatt customers and de-emphasize Hilton ones. Compounding matters is the decline of Ocho Rios itself which with the reduction in cruise ship traffic and it’s distance from any airport has really hurt tourism there.
With all of the negatives I simply cannot recommend this resort. Travelers will be far happier avoiding the two hour bus ride and staying in Montego Bay, or traveling west towards Nehru!
This is the 2nd time this year I have visited this resort and it didn't disappoint. Spent 2 weeks. The resort does need some upgrading as it is showing it's age in some areas. Staff are excellent and that is the reason so many people keep coming back. Stayed in Emerald Lanai ground floor and enjoyed being able to sit outside our room. Entertainment staff are excellent. Shout out to Tammy, TT, Cheeky, Krazy Kim, the Mayor and I'm sorry I forgot the names of the other members. They really know how to get the crowd involved. Shout out to the waiters, bartenders and everyone that made our stay special. Fantastic pizza served in courtyard. Enjoyed the Jamaican choices at the buffet. Lamb chops excellent at the Moonstone restaurant. Thank you to Jade Samari to accommodating us for my sister's Birthday and the 4 gentleman from New York and the 2 ladies from California who contributed to an enjoyable dinner. Shout out to Judeen as well. Can't wait to return.
My husband and I had a wonderful and relaxing week at Jewel. This was our first time to Jamaica. I’d like to mention staff members Kevin, Morris, Cornell, Amanda, and Camara and point out their amazing service! They all made our trip brighter! Tom Tom and his tribe of cats were another highlight of my trip - I love that the resort takes care of them. The food was fantastic the entire trip - the best meals we had were the lamb chops and steak. We enjoyed the beach party and thought the jerk chicken and pork were AMAZING!
There were some issues we encountered though. Our room looked right into the roof of the Buffett restaurant. It’s a horrible location, I wish we had been moved, especially since the reservation staff knew this trip was special. The room was run down. Some of the lights no longer worked either, as well as the TV remote. Upon check in I told the front desk staff that prior to arriving, I was offered an upgrade over the phone. The woman questioned me and there was never a resolution. I was very upset but since this was my first visit, I didn’t push back any further. I found the entire front desk staff rude and not customer service oriented. Maybe the changes within the resort are effecting their moods and attitudes toward guests. Due to this event and the poor room location, i am not sure Dominic and I would return.
Our bags on the last day were not picked up on time. We were told 8 am because our bus was coming at 8:20 am. We went down to the front lobby at 8 am and we did not see our bags. My husband panicked! He had to chase a staff member down and let them know we had not received our bags. The man sent someone to our room...mind you the time was 8:22 am. Lucky for us the bus driver lost the luggage compartment key so the bus was on standby anyways. Due to the lost key, and three resort stops after ours, it took us over 2 hrs to get to the airport!! TERRIBLE!!!!!!
Overall, we had a pleasant week. The bar/wait staff, cats, weather, and food were the highlights. The room was poor, the front lobby desk staff unkind, and transportation could not be counted on.
