Playful summer camp-style digs in a renovated motor lodge with bocce, hammocks and a firepit in Sag Harbor
Set on six wooded acres about a mile and a half from Sag Harbor, Forever Bungalows feels a world away from the $32 lobster rolls and expense account champagne of the Hamptons. A mix of standalone bungalows and a two-story renovated motor lodge, the summer camp vibe is decidedly more relaxed, friendly and easy on the wallet.
Bed and Bath
The no-fuss, no-muss rooms are definitely Ikea chic, with Swedish minimalism joining eco-friendly elements like recycled glass bathroom tiles and low-flow toilets. There’s a home-away-from-home vibe thanks to fridges, flat screens and, in bungalows, small kitchens. But this is definitely a no-frills, fun-in-the-sun setting. Request the penthouse or queen room for astro-turfed outdoor space.
Kick off your flip flops for a cold one around the firepit with other 20- and 30-somethings, who chat each other up over bocce and badminton games. The check-in area in the property’s former garage doubles as a hangout area, with general store offerings like ice cream sandwiches and sodas (beers and wine to come later this summer). There is no restaurant or bar, but the staff can give you the inside track on local eats.
In the Area
Rent a bike from the hotel, make a right into the neighboring Sag Harbor community golf course and wend your way a mile through the wooded paths to Barcelona Beach, an off-the-radar, locals spot. On the way back, stop at the teeny shack that doubles as the golf course clubhouse for $3 beers, the best deal in the Hamptons. When you’re ready to swank it up, head down to prime Sag Harbor for rose and lobster rolls overlooking the yacht club at Dock Side or impeccable Italian fare in the stylish garden of Tutto Il Giorno. Come winter, you can go ice skating nearby or on a nature walk.
