How to Get There
I came with some friends here and the stay was totally wonderfull. From the restaurant to the the Front Desk all the staff was professionally kind and helpful, especially I have to highlight the person of Ruben in reception that helped me a lot with some doubts and wss suprisingly smiling the whole time. After the place has something special with the river and mountains just in front of you and the huge garedn with the baby alpácas!
It is an experience that I will bring back to Australia.
There is no denying that the setting of the Rio Sagrado is beautiful. We had a room overlooking the river and the sound of the water was very relaxing. The room itself was rather rustic and we felt that it needed updating. The general manager, Patricia, wrote us a personal letter of welcome with pressed flowers which was a nice touch. However, the service we experienced elsewhere, in the restaurant & especially on reception fell short of the standard we received at all the other Belmond properties we stayed at in Peru (5 in all) Service in the restaurant was hit and miss and when we checked out, the male receptionist seemed totally uninterested, not even asking us how our stay had been. Looking at the prices charged by the Rio Sagrado compared with one or two excellent competitors in the Urubamba valley, I feel that the Rio Sagrado needs to up its game.
My wife and I stayed at the Rio Sagrado two nights while on our way to Machu Picchu. The ruins of Ollyantaytambo and the town of Chinchero were part of our exploration, so this hotel was an ideal location for day trips.
Located on the bank of the Rio Urubamba, the Sagrado is a peaceful, quiet, nicely cultivated slice of countryside complete with juvenile llamas, hammocks, pool, spa and a very good restaurant. Wifi equipped, there is no television service, and we enjoyed the isolation as it were. There are some 20+ rooms and villas, no more than 4 in an building and well distributed on the property. The town of Urubamba is about 5km/3mi away and the train station there serves, I believe, Cusco and Aguas Calientes, the portal to Machu Picchu.
Our room was well sited looking out on the "backyard" and the river. Comfortable and well appointed, it was a short 30 seconds to the restaurant, with indoor and al fresco dining available.
Much credit to the Belmond folks for this property, a real jewel in their collection.
Stayed 2 nights as part of our tour with a Belmond .
Very picturesque Location .
Lovely gardens . Cute baby alpacas.
Room was charming.
Food was delicious. Had dinner both nights on site as we were too tired to leave the property .
Staff well trained and very professional.
Our stay at Hotel Rio Sagrado was so enjoyable! We arrived around 6 PM after a short tour and a plane flight from Lima to Cusco. Unfortunately my checked bag did not arrive on the flight. The airline said they would try to send it to arrive in Cusco by 7 PM. The hotel was wonderful in making phone calls and assured me the bag would arrive that evening. Staff brought it to our room before 9 PM that evening. So appreciated all their efforts.
Our room was very spacious and well-equipped. The large bathroom and extra storage space made it easy to feel organized, which can be hard in most hotel rooms while living out of a suitcase. The spacious shower, with upper level window, was fantastic. There was ample plugs to charge her five devices.
I loved the architecture. Wood floors, beamed ceilings, and spacious windows overlooking the valley and Urubamba river. The patio and outdoor space for our room made everything worthwhile. Loved having morning coffee there with the peaceful scenery and watching the birds, including hummingbirds. The expansive, well-maintained landscaping and walkways, for the small number of rooms, made it seem like you were at a private resort.
We only stayed two nights so cut our all-day tour short to return to the hotel and make use of the heated pool plus the Jacuzzi and steam room at the spa. There was no extra charge to use the wonderful indoor/outdoor Jacuzzi and steam room at the spa.
The included breakfast was great. We also very much enjoyed the two evening meals at the restaurant. One night there was a barbecue. The barbecued salmon and tenderloin we ordered were great along with the four types of roasted vegetables. We appreciated the included extras so found only the entrée was sufficient. Wonderful bread and small appetizer first and candies at the end of the meal were welcome treats.
All staff were wonderful. Jose, Smick and Denisse went out of their way to help us out. Would definitely love to stay here again and would make it a longer stay.
