The first Caribbean outpost from design-loving Thompson Hotels, the Playa del Carmen promises a sophisticated Midcentury Mexican style, large guest rooms, and a 30,000-square-foot roof deck for lounging, dining, drinking, and dancing. Mexico City designers Niz + Chauvet are behind the smart style, which uses local materials and includes bespoke furnishings by Mexican craftsmen. All of the 92 guest rooms have beds dressed in sateen covers, craft cocktail bars and gourmet minibars, free WiFi and (in many rooms) private terraces furnished with custom daybeds. Most rooms overlook Playa’s streets, but some have partial views of the Caribbean. For even better scenery, head up to the sprawling 30,000-square-foot roof deck for 360-degree views of downtown and the blue sea beyond. This sure-to-be-a-hotspot playground has an infinity pool, sunken loungers and cabanas, a cocktail bar and food by the seafood experts at Catch, in New York’s Meatpacking District.
In the Area
The Thompson Playa del Carmen is on a prime patch of Quinta Avenida, Playa’s frenetic main thoroughfare. There are curiously few good Mexican restaurants, but you’ll find local specialties at Maiz de Mar, Almirante Peche and the hip Plank. For beach time (until the Beach House opens), nab your lounger early at Mamita’s Beach Club or arrive after dark for a dance party on the sand. For a dose of retail therapy, Quinta Avenida favorites include Narcisa and La Bikineria. Away from Playa, make the one-hour drive to hip Tulum for culture at the ancient Mayan ruins; top eats at Hartwood, Posada Margherita and Zamas; and eco-adventures in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
How to Get There
This hotel rooftop is my favorite in Playa Del Carmen. Catch Playa is on the roof and some of the best food in town with an incredible atmosphere night and day. Great pool, 180 degree view of the ocean and great music playing all the time. The rooms are beautiful and will give you everything you need. Staff is great and will bend over backwards for you. My only issue with this hotel is paying a resort fee. I think its a ridiculous charge and can never understand it. Just include it in the price or don't charge it. Charging an additional fee on top of a fee is overkill.
Great hotel, great service, beautiful bar on the top floor with a great swimming pool, I would give it 5 stars if the prices at the bar and restaurants were lowered a bit especially for the hotel guests
How to begin ......Me and my fiancé had the most amazing time ever in on vacation we have travel to serval places around he world, but this hotel and service by far is beyond incredible, from the begging of our arrival to the end ... the costumer service was fantastic ... they made us feel like royalty.... these gentlemen were just outstanding,Roberto ,Christian ,Julian ,Osvaldo and Rafael .... helped with anything we needed. From the moment I made the booking , Julian kept me updated and helped with so much and was very patient with all my questions , because I had a ton of them lol ... the food and the room service was AMAZING.... best breakfast I ever had, specially by the roof top pool side !!!! Hand down !!! I would like too thank the staff at the Thompson ... thank you guys so much !!!
We stayed at the Thompson this weekend, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. We were greeted by hotel staff who spoke fluent English and were offered complimentary facial, entrance to the Frida Kahlo Museum, WiFi, and access to the rooftop pool, which is spectacular (look up pictures). The room was clean and aesthetically pleasing, with plenty of snacks and beverages to choose from in the mini bar. The restaurant, Catch, which sits on the rooftop, had great service and a wide selection of delicious food. We liked it so much that we ate there twice during our stay in Playa del Carmen. On our last day, after leaving our bags with concierge, we showed up to leave and the bellman walked our bags all the way down the street to the ADO terminal. Above and beyond! Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel. Their staff is impeccably chosen and so are their amenities.
My sister and I (late-20s) had an amazing experience here. The entire staff at the hotel is ultra-accommodating. They late us have a late check out, walked with us to the bus station with all of our bags and even ran after us to help us find a place to watch the World Cup when they noticed we couldn’t find a place on the street.
We had two delicious dinners at Catch - the food was exceptional and the view was gorgeous.
Our room was lovely - the bed was super comfortable and the shower water pressure was strong.
Would absolutely recommend this hotel!
