How to Get There
The hotel has many great things, however, the beach is full of tons of sargassum (seaweed). Every day there are machines cleaning the beach but this is no use, it is completely full of seaweed and nobody dares go into the sea, the beach is completely deserted.
This is not the hotel’s fault and they actually do everything they can for your vacations to be amazing. The hotel is beautiful and service is perfect, every single worker is kind and ready to help you with whatever you need. Also, food is delicious and for dinner there are many restaurants that offer different types of food.
However this doesn’t make up for the fact that you go to Playa del Carmen expecting to actually get some playa and it’s really disappointing if you don’t. I asked around and all beaches from Cancun to Tulum are affected by sargassum and they don’t know how long this problem is going to last.
So, to summarize, the hotel is perfect but I wouldn’t recommend it (and I won’t come back to Riviera Maya) because the beach is completely invaded by sargassum and there are many other places to go in the Caribbean where you can actually enjoy a beach.
We stayed at the Paradisus La Perla (Royal Service) for 10 nights from the 10 June 2019 (our first time to Mexico)
I shall try to break this review down into sections so you can chose to read the parts relevant to you as there is lots to say about this place so let’s get started .....
ARRIVAL AT THE AIRPORT & TRANSFER
Cancun airport is bigger than we expected so make sure you have comfortable shoes. By the time we had walked from the plane to luggage claim our cases were just coming onto the belt so no hanging around.
Be wary of some of the reps inside the airport-they tell you their job is to “show you where to go” but in truth they lead you to a desk and try to sell you trips etc however there is no pressure and they are nice and polite
The transfer bus reps are waiting for you out the front of the airport if you can’t spot your rep you can ask any of the many other reps or taxi drivers and they will take you to them. Your rep then takes you to your designated bus bay. We waited around 15-20 mins for our bus.
The wait was nice we had a (very over priced) pina colada. There is a very welcoming fun vibrant feel in the air which we enjoyed
When the bus arrived the rep introduced us to the driver they both put our cases on the bus and we were soon on our way
The drive is around 45 minutes and it was interesting to see the Mexican way of life and to watch locals going about their business. The bus was a ford transit 10 seater with good AC and very clean the company used is Otium
If you chose a taxi expect to pay around 50 US dollers however the bus is pleasant and complimentary (although that may be for Royal Service guests only be sure to double check)
ARRIVAL AT THE RESORT
The road leading to the resort is lined with Palm trees well manicured and very pretty. The entrance to the resort itself is stunning and as with most luxury resorts manned with 24 hour security
The drive through the entrance is fantastic . As a Royal Service guests you drive past the Esmeralda (family) section and get a view of the fantastic new water park.past the Esmeralda reception on to the La Perla reception where the bus drops you off
This is the last you see of your luggage until you get taken to your room (a fantastic service)
There is an array of delightful staff waiting for you offering refreshing hand towels and giving you a huge welcome
Soon after a buggy/golf cart arrives to take you to the Royal Service Private check-in
You are greeted again by many lovely happy friendly staff and champagne is brought to you at your check-in desk
At this point (after the formalities) we were introduced to our Butler -Ours was Angel and he truely was an absolute Angel.
We arrived before the official check-in time (15:00) but this was no problem for us or the staff
We sat in a nice cool reception lounge where Angel set the wi-if up for us and we connected on WHATS APP (for the butler service) he then gave us a tour of the resort and left us to look around on our own. From our early check-in we were given access to All of the facilities
Angel sent a message when our room was ready so we met back at the reception and he took us to our room where our cases were waiting
He gave us a run down of the facilities, checked we were happy and left us to settle in
Shortly after a bottle of bubbly and a fruit platter was sent to our room as a welcome surprise
We requested a room with a view an we got wot we aksed for
A third (top floor) room south facing overlooking the sea to the left -our room was also overlooking the Royal Service entrance (not the pool) so was very quiet and private(just how we like it) our room was 1374
The room itself is well equipped spotlessly clean pretty and very spacious the bed is huge and very comfortable
The balcony is also clean and spacious we made good use of the hot tub/spa bath out on the balcony
The cleaning and turn down service is faultless
If you wish to tip the cleaners/turndown staff we suggest you leave the money under your pillow
The mini bar service is also faultless
We left a note of what we wanted along with a tip in our fridge every day tho you can also aks your butler for your chosen selection
If you wish to tip the mini-bar man it’s best to leave it in the fridge -if you leave it on the side the cleaners can think it is for them so we kept our tips for them separate
The one downside to the rooms is that guests can smoke on the balconies of all rooms.
Unfortunately the guests beside and below us smoked a lot and as non-smokers we couldn’t stand the smell so some of our time relaxing on our balcony was cut short-we had to go inside because of the smell. It’s a shame there isn’t a separate block of rooms for smokers
this service is amazing and well worth the extra
As mentioned our butler Angel was fantastic. Professional to the core knowledgable chatty funny friendly kind an all round darling and a credit to the resort
His attention to detail is outstanding as is his understang of the importance of those intimate touches
Over the 10 days he liked to surprise and spoil us.
We would arrive back at our room from dinner to find he had drawn us a bubble bath with rose petals, he put scented aromatherapy pillows on our bed (which smell heavenly) , ran us a hot tub/spa bath on the balcony with bubbles, put rose petals around our table in our room, chocolates on the bed and lots more
By day he always came over to make sure all was ok and we were happy also to chat and getting to know him was an absolute joy
We booked, changed and cancelled dinner with him, if we wanted bubbly brought to our room he arranged that, he got me a yoga mat so I could go down to the beach or Palapa to do my yoga when ever I wanted
I know I have missed out lots of things he did for us as there was so many -he really did go way above his role to make us feel very special. He always had time for us even just to chat
On a sad note-Your butler will also arrange your transfer/taxi back to the airport at the end of your holiday
As a royal service guest you have access to ALL the facilities at both Esmeralda and La Perla as well as all the extras Royal Service has to offer
As royal guests you get access to 2 exclusive pools
The main pool has the swim up pool bar and the pool bar. This pool was very popular with young Americans but way too loud for us
We saw guests smoking in this pool which also put us off the atmosphere by this pool just wasn’t for us
There is a much nicer quieter pool round the corner so this is the one we used
The water was warm and both the pool and the pool area were very clean and there was lots of sun beds to choose from
There is also 2 bubble tubs/spas off this pool these were also very clean and great to use for a cool down or relax
The wait service around the pool is excellent the waiters love to make you their own special cocktails and keep you well stocked up with much needed water
The food is also fantastic. Lots to choose from and very tasty. You can order food either at the pool bar or your pool waiter can take your order and will bring it to your bed you don’t have to move atall to get food or drinks and the staff are fun friendly and very helpful
Although these pools are advertised as “exclusive for royal service guests” there is no management of this
There were days when guests from other parts of the resort used these pools but with the staff seeming to relying on guests honesty as the only way of managing it then of course you will get those that take advantage of that which is a shame
The hole of the royal service is not sectioned off it is open for all to walk through
There is a wristband system at the resort but one member of staff told us there is 22 or 24 different coloured bands so it’s very hard to remember them allow 3 occasions we saw families with children (from Esmeralda) walking around LaPerla (adults only)
As royal guests you are given a natural rope wristband
The resteraunt exclusive to Royal Service guests (La Palapa) is by far the best on the resort
Royal guests also have their own gym to use which we used most days
There are lots of extras as a Royal Service guest though we did expect it to be more separate or better managed than It was
the section of Royal Service beach is nice and small but plenty big enough for the number of royal guests
It was nice to see a security guard at the beach for all of the day
Also the wait Service at the beach is the same you get as by the pool -excellent
Sadly over the past few years the sea and beach has been invaded by sea weed
This is not just at Paradisus it is all along the riviera (I’m not sure if Cancun is effected by it too)
If you do some research you will discover this seaweed is from the amazon
By nature the tide draws this seaweed into the sea where it provides home for many types of marine life however with disgusting amounts of fertiliser the government allow to be pumped into the ocean this sea weed has gone wild now destroying marine life and beaches
Staff and even the army are employed to do all they can to clean the beaches but it’s clear to see they fight a losing battle. The only way to resolve this is for the government to deal with the cause not the impact -very sad
Because of the seaweed the beach is a little smelly but it’s one of those smells you kind of don’t notice after 10 mins or do. It didn’t put us off using the beach but if you are a beach person and love the sea you may be a little disappointed though the water activities are in no way effected by the sea weed -you can see how clear the water is beyond the seaweed
There is lots to do at this resort lots of daily keep fit activities and entertainment around the big pool at La Perla (adults only) however if you are not royal service and you want a nice quiet or smaller pool then you are out of luck -there is only the one main pool in La Perla -that’s why we went for Royal Service
Some of of the evening activities and shows are for the hole resort (both Esmeralda and la Perla) so be prepared for kids runnin around if you want entertainment
Although there is a nice relaxed bar area in La Perla where things happen -a DJ a band dancing then from 23:00 the DJ moves into the Red Room
This place is a bar but has the vibe of a night club the energy in there felt tense and awkward-not for us but I’m sure the younger men and women may enjoy it
There is so much to do here if you want to -or if you are more like us (old and boring) there is plenty of places to relax (if you are a royal service guest)
some of the restersunts here are over at the Esmeralda side (the Mexican, Italian, and Indian I think)
We tried Mole the Mexican and were very disappointed
The atmosphere was tense kids running around all over the place and a sense of being rushed by the waiters
The chef was watching my husband eat which was awkward as the food was awful
We were expecting to see nachos, enchiladas , chillie, Mexican rice burritos on the menu but we didn’t
The choice was not good, the quality of the meat was poor and the cooking was bad
The steak was almost all fat and inedible the veg was awfully greasy and over cooked
To be honest we couldn’t get out of there quick enough and we never went back to the Esmeralda side again which was a shame as we were looking forward to Indian and Italian but the hole Mole experience put us off going through those glass doors ever again
The Grill -this resteraunt was hit and miss
We first used it for lunch which was divine
The waiter was very attentive and when he saw us at dinner he always came over to chat and offer to get us drinks even though he wasn’t our waiter-we forgot his name but he was by far the best waiter their
The lunch menu was fab -a good selection, good quality food cooked to perfection
We tried dinner there 3 times the first time was fantastic we had the same waiter from lunch the day before and he could not do enough for us
We had the Chinese box steak which he cooked at our table-great fun cooked to perfection we also had the recommended rib-eye steak again cooked to perfection great quality piece of meat the hole experience was flawless however the other 2 times were very disappointing -an under cooked burger, steak that was tough and more fat than meat , I ordered the bourbon ribs but they didn’t have them so went for salmon which was very very nice on our last visit there we ordered 2 white wine spritzers but the bar man was new so didn’t know how to make them it took 3 attempts to get it right. The bar manager came over to apologise and made the drinks herself she was very apologetic and seemed frustrated at the new bar tender
Having said all this the waiters were truely embarrassed and unbelievably apologetic when we left our food and offered us more or a different choice-we didn’t complain they just saw we left the
food -we didn’t take more food and when we tipped they looked genuinely shocked and were very thankful
The other restersunts at La Perla were mainly fish and steak so we didn’t bother with those I’m not a huge red meat fan and my husband can only eat cod or tuna so we were pretty limited
La Palapa was by far the best resteraunt
We had breakfast there most mornings welcomed by the delightful Cecilia (the nicest welcome host ever) served by the best waiter on the resort Renau
We were served by other fantastic delightful waiters too but Renau had that something special about him and his English is excellent
Breakfast is out of this world here so much choice cooked to perfection using the best ingredients served by the best of the bunch waiters
We didn’t have lunch here (usually too full from breakfast)
However dinner here was divine
Again welcomed by great hostesses exception food cooked onperfetion by the best chefs served by
excellent waiters lots to choose from
The salmon starter was my favourite
Overall dining at this resort is limited for fussy eaters like us -not much choice for vegetarians or those whom (Luke me) don’t eat much meat
I think if it wasn’t for La Palapa which was a hit every time we would have struggled
Some restersunts are hit and miss some we didn’t use either due to the menu or being in Esmeralda
Apart from La Palapa the menus do seem very catered toward Americans-lots of huge cuts of red meat and not much spice. I was expecting much more spices and flavours to be used in the food and much more Mexican food on offer but it was mainly huge chunks of very salty meat
Thank the lord we went for royal service where we had La Palapa
this seemed to be based on quantity rather than quality
I got the impression some of this food was taken from a buffet (perhsps from Esmeralda side?) plated up and brought to your room the New York strip was huge (bigger than the plate) but very fatty and salty the pasta bolognaise was cold and had bits of spaghetti in it
The burger and fries was good
Continental breakfast was ok
The room service menu is tight -if it’s not on the menu you can’t have it simple as that !!!
When the room service staff bring it to your room they like to display it and lay it all out on your table which is very nice of them and they take slot of pride in it -when we tipped they looked surprised
The one thing missing from this place for food is a place to go in the evening where you don’t have to book and sit to dine -a casual walk up place to get a pizza or plate of fries or a burger etc whilst out and about the resort-just a casual drop in or even take it away place -if you only want fries or a sandwich you have to go to your room to order room service
3 times we walked to 5th Avenue
On leaving the resort by the security main gate turn left and you are in 5 avenue
It’s abit of a wake-up call at first as you are now in Mexico out of the luxury of the resort
To see how some of the locals live is bitter sweet -it’s sad to see. they have nothing living in cubes that clearly used to be their business but now a closed down shack for their home yet they smile wave and say hola as you walk by
It may look quite daunting to some but there is a nice feel to the road and it’s very safe
It’s a long old walk to the shops (about 45 mins each way) as the Avenue goes on you see the investment being put into the place -it makes you realise the importance of the tourism industry here -it’s giving locals jobs and a better life which is nice to know
Some of the street art along the avenue is stunning and a shame it will soon be gone when all the works in the avenue are complete
Shops apartments restersunts are being built in abundance I’m sure it will look very different on our next visit
When you reach the shops beware the shopkeepers lies-they see your wristband and they know them all-they will say “hello youbrecognise me? I am waiter at your hotel etc etc then try to get you to go in their shop
They are harmless and not atall intimidating-they are just trying to earn a living and are funny and charming
Expect to pay half the price of what they first tell you or what items are marked up as although some shops have signs saying the price you see is the price you pay-do not barter in these shops !!!
As you can perhaps tell we are English so tipping is not our custom-we have no idea who to tip when to tip or how much so basically we tipped absolutely everybody for absolutely everything every day 😂😂😂 not huge amounts-just a couple of dollars each time for all waiters that served us, cleaners, turn down service, mini-bar man, pool waiters, the golf buggy man(he will take and collect you to/from royal service/security when leaving the resort and on check-in and out) bus drivers bell boys, absolutely anybody whom did anything for us and of course our amazing butler Angel we left a nice tip when we left-he was worth every penny and more he is a pure joy a true angel
We tried to see if other guests tipped-some did some didn’t so I guess it’s personal choice but to us the staff work extremely hard and all go out their way to chat and help even when they are so busy and that deserves recognition
Overall would we stay here again? YES BUT ONLY WITH ROYAL SERVICE
we plan to return next year and hope to see Angel (our butler) again
Would we recommend the place ? YES
Although we didn’t use the Esmeralda side it’s clear to see it’s a great family resort
However if you are adults only seeking the luxury and tranquility of a proper adults only resort you may want to look elsewhere or definitely only go for the Royal Service
In honesty we did expect the 2 resorts to be completely separate (not one huge complex split into 2 -the only segregation being an automatic glass door) you will see and hear children and child’s activities here at some point
If we hadn’t have gone for the royal service here but gone to La Perla as adults only guests I don’t think we would come back but the experience with royal service makes up for the very few negatives this resort has
When we want our next true adults only luxury tranquil holiday we would return to the places we have been in the past or try somewhere new that doesn’t have a family resort asdociated to it
Ok that’s it I think iv covered most of it apologies for any spelling and typing errors
All Inclusive service was outstanding.
Hotel was beautiful, great scenery. Pools all around the place.
Buffets for all tastes. Menu restaurants actually very good. (need prior reservation to avoid queues.)
The only turn off was the beach. "El zargazo", a kind of sea weed coming from the coral reef piles upon the shore, making the sea sulfur-like smelly and not nice to swim in.
For this time of the year, if beach is your thing, forget about it. Look somewhere else. But pools and sun are great inside the hotel.
For an extra charge, you can get a butler service, which was great.
Food, drinks, amenities were fantastic.
Can't miss going to XCARET, to see the night show. Also go to Chi Chen itza and dive into a Cenote.
Great place to comeback. Wouldn't try another hotel. Would repeat!!!
Side to side they have the Paradisus Esmeralda, intended for families and kids. La Perla is only for adults. La Perla guests can go to La Esmeralda, but La Perla is adults only.
The pictures at the website actually depict what the really look like. What you see is what you get!
The most remarkable feature is the service from everybody at all times. Extraordinarily kind!
This place was beyond expectation -the photos don’t do it justice! The setting is completely five star and the food is amazing. Highly recommend for a relaxing honeymoon. It’s a romantic break for couples with options to explore and venture out if you want. If you are wanting something more relaxing, definitely go for the Royal service. It’ll make your stay that bit more special and the royal service pool is relaxing and quieter compared to the main pool, which was more of a pool party -not really our scene for a honeymoon but good if you’re after that sort of holiday! So I’d say couples and honeymoons, definitely go for royal service. Party holiday with friends, no need for royal service.
This trip was amazing! The Royal Service is the only way to go. Swim up hotel suite! Greatest thing EVER. Staff very attentive, willing to help with anything you could possibly need. You must try the Yhi Spa while you’re here. I did a scrub and massage with Sarali and she was the perfect way to end a stressful travel day! The next day was a massage and facial with Alma. One of the best facials I’ve had. I’m already not looking forward to leaving tomorrow, but am looking forward to my next visit!
