On Calle 8, less than half a block from Fifth Avenue and the beach, Illusion Boutique Hotel offers a comfy base for enjoying the best of Playa. In a distinctive low-rise building scored with terra-cotta tile topped balconies and lots of greenery, interiors channel a cool, beachy look from the marble floors and chunky bamboo furniture to tropical prints and whirring ceiling fans. A towering water feature anchors the central atrium where guests can sit, dine and drink alfresco. Guestrooms are all individually designed but uniformly spacious and have AC, satellite TV and mini fridges. Mirage and Prestige rooms are done up in classic tropical style with rattan bed frames, colorful artwork and Balinese-inspired furnishings, while Cabaña rooms have a more contemporary look, with black lacquer furniture and palette of slate, chocolate and white. Guestrooms on the fourth floor have direct access to the rooftop lounge and plunge pool, but all guests are welcome to use the communal space for daytime sun worship with a Caribbean Sea view. On the ground floor, Nuestra Casa restaurant dishes up a healthy continental breakfast, homemade baked goods and a menu of local favorites and international fare.
In the Area
The hotel is just a block from a prime patch of Fifth Avenue, Playa del Carmen’s frenetic main thoroughfare. There are curiously few good Mexican restaurants, but you’ll find local specialties at Maiz de Mar, Almirante Peche and the hip Plank. For beach time, nab your lounger early at Mamita’s Beach Club or arrive after dark for a dance party on the sand. For a dose of retail therapy, Fifth Avenue favorites include Narcisa and La Bikineria. Away from Playa, make the one-hour drive to hip Tulum for culture at the ancient Mayan ruins, top eats at Hartwood, Posada Margherita and Zamas, and eco-adventures in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
How to Get There
We came for scuba diving and the hotel is perfect located in combination with the price.
Even to the beach just 50 meters to walk. Up to the 5th Ave. ) tourist area just 1 min.
The stuff is very friendly and do everything for you to let you feel comfortable.
The best of the Stuff was Rosanna, the supervisor, ( an Italien girl, which made our stay more then perfect ) THANKS ROSANNA.
We've got every eve a nice sculpture made from the towels on our bed. So cute.
The hotel is well recommended.

Clean, roomy, well-located, lovely breakfast. Can't think of a better value for money. From there you can walk pretty much everywhere and even though it's right next to 5a avenida, there's no noise. Some reviews say breakfast portions are small - there's no buffet, you order a la carte from a few options - but it was more than enough food for me and for my husband. Pancakes and egg white omelets are good picks and for 20 pesos you can trade your cafe americano for a lovely, creamy latte. Would stay again in a heartbeat. Staff was super friendly!
Excellent hotel for the price. Located half block from the beach was awesome. The hotel is modern, and the staff are all excellent. The room was very nice and clean. And AC and TV worked just fine. The small pool was very nice as well.
Was moved to Illusions by one of their sister hotels. What a great experience. Aside from the music from Carmen Hotel, which can be good- listening while sitting on your semi private deck ( recommend .5th floor) or when in pool. Downside is hearing it while sleeping. But it ends up not being too problematic as you get used to it, and you are in the heart of downtown and you get a beach view! I loved my stay. Room was awesome, extremely clean and comfortable. Kudos to the cleanliness and comfort. Rd was huge and comfy. I also felt very safe being solo. I only rate “very good” in sleep quality and not excellent to be honest for readers to know that you will hear some music during sleep - but I’m fussy and I was not bothered much after 2nd night! Again, I enjoyed the music while reading on my deck and having my dinner
We had an uncomfortable stay at this hotel: Few pros and a lot of cons:
+ Friendliness of the staff
+ Central location
- Noisy room
- No privacy and dark: windows only on public parts
- Humid room that smells like mold
- Discontinuous hot-water
- Too firm mattress
- Miserable breakfast: slow service, poor variety (e.g. menu with 1 American coffee, 1 croissant and 1 juice and everything else is extra)
The only illusion here is given by the four stars. We do not recommend this hotel.
