On Calle 8, less than half a block from Fifth Avenue and the beach, Illusion Boutique Hotel offers a comfy base for enjoying the best of Playa. In a distinctive low-rise building scored with terra-cotta tile topped balconies and lots of greenery, interiors channel a cool, beachy look from the marble floors and chunky bamboo furniture to tropical prints and whirring ceiling fans. A towering water feature anchors the central atrium where guests can sit, dine and drink alfresco. Guestrooms are all individually designed but uniformly spacious and have AC, satellite TV and mini fridges. Mirage and Prestige rooms are done up in classic tropical style with rattan bed frames, colorful artwork and Balinese-inspired furnishings, while Cabaña rooms have a more contemporary look, with black lacquer furniture and palette of slate, chocolate and white. Guestrooms on the fourth floor have direct access to the rooftop lounge and plunge pool, but all guests are welcome to use the communal space for daytime sun worship with a Caribbean Sea view. On the ground floor, Nuestra Casa restaurant dishes up a healthy continental breakfast, homemade baked goods and a menu of local favorites and international fare.
In the Area
The hotel is just a block from a prime patch of Fifth Avenue, Playa del Carmen’s frenetic main thoroughfare. There are curiously few good Mexican restaurants, but you’ll find local specialties at Maiz de Mar, Almirante Peche and the hip Plank. For beach time, nab your lounger early at Mamita’s Beach Club or arrive after dark for a dance party on the sand. For a dose of retail therapy, Fifth Avenue favorites include Narcisa and La Bikineria. Away from Playa, make the one-hour drive to hip Tulum for culture at the ancient Mayan ruins, top eats at Hartwood, Posada Margherita and Zamas, and eco-adventures in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
How to Get There
Very chilled out hotel in very central location. Excellent service from reception staff Richy and Mario. Very good breakfasts in adjoining cafe with excellent service from Miriam. Only disappointment we were celebrating a special birthday and I had mentioned this several times to the hotel but nothing happened.
If you want a chill and welcoming place to stay this is the place. Thanks to Jaime, Anahi, Ivonne, Ingrid, Tania and Rossanna for always being attentive and informative whenever I had a question of any sort.
Hotel was spotlessly clean and as advertised. Breakfast was in an adjoining cafe and it was delicious. Miriam served me each morning and she was wonderful. Very helpful and courteous. Richy in reception was very informative and helpful also. All in all a very relaxing hotel
This is was our 3rd visit to illusion in as many year. we had booked directly with the hotel about 8 months before our trip and explained it was our wedding anniversary.
We booked the balcony room which we had stayed in 2 year's previously.
When we arrived they did not know we were returning guest which for a small boutique hotel I thought was bad. we were shown to our room and I have to say I was so disappointed it was nothing like the room we had stayed in before there was only a rail inside the room to hang the clothes I did complain and our room was moved but I can honestly say it was not much better there was no curtains on the windows just a very light one that let the light in all the time and the bed was so hard. The email that we had received stated that we would receive a free upgrade if it was available and other little preks but this most defiantly did not happen.
the following day my husband spoke to Claudia who in fairness did offer us another room and did upgrade us 2 days later and the room was what you would expect form a Boutique hotel.
the hotel bar was opened but there was no happy hour which I felt would have worked very well as the beach was in such bad condition.
After that our stay was very good and Claudia is a pleasure to deal with.We
would possibly stay here again if the price was right but we would have to upgrade our room from the balcony room as I felt the room was very shabby and not worth the money.
I do feel that they should look after returning customers a bit better.
The location of the hotel is great however the place is with very limited services just a place to stay no more. If you dont mind the place and just looking for an accommodation for your stay then this would be good a good choice otherwise look for another palce!
