How to Get There
Beautiful venue. Nickel and dime you to death on everything. First place I have every stayed at where I was (attempted to be charged) to relax on a covered cabana. $95 US dollars per day - what a joke.
We'll never stay here again.
My husband and I just got back from a wonderful 4 night stay here. The staff and service was terrific. I loved the location of the property. I wanted to stay at a nice place without it being an all inclusive because I wanted to visit this region of Mexico. We ate at local restaurants and visited the sites without the isolation of a huge resort. This was a prefect size. The pool overlooked the ocean with a nice beach yet we could walk to town for lunch or dinner. Yet, the breakfast buffet was phenomenal to start off the day. I thought the bed was comfortable, the decor was a bit too hard edged but everything was marble or tile mainly because the area is so humid. I would stay here again!
On the way from the Grand Hyatt to the airport and Cancun, my son left his wallet in the taxi of Mr. Pedro Montero Caamal. By the time we found out, it was too late as we were already boarding the plane. I called Mr. Caamal. He found the wallet in his car. He volunteered to take it back to the Grand Hyatt. To make sure we would get the wallet intact, he made an exhaustive list of what was in it (including quite a bit of money). The hotel management sent us the wallet via DHL. A week later my son had his wallet, intact and complete. Needless to say, a less extraordinary human being could have simply told us that the wallet was not in his car. Mr. Caamal's honesty and diligence in making sure that the hotel sent the wallet exactly as he found it are commendable. We had a wonderful vacation in Playa del Carmen, with beautiful scuba dives and beautiful people. But the best memory of Mexico we carried home to Atlanta was our admiration for this gentleman's rectitude! Muchas gracias, Pedro. Fondly, the Klin family (Atlanta, GA, USA).
wife and i stayed in beginning of may 2019. first the positives. we got a room on the small pool. the room was nice and clean. the bathroom was very nice. the hotel staff was extremely helpful and attentive and check in was quick. the hotel is beautiful and right in the middle of everything. it is walking distance to fifth avenue.
now the bad. the value to eat and drink at the hotel is terrible. you pay big US city prices for the food. ive been going to mexico (here and cabo) for 20 years. i had a 25 dollar hamburger at the grille where our bill was well over 100 dollars. the breakfast buffet was around 40 dollars. drinks were very expensive. the minibar fridge was very small and did not keep the drinks cold. the pool outside our room was not cleaned daily as it was full of bugs and other debris. the other big problem that is not the fault of the hotel but that all travelers should know- there is a seaweed problem. i read that before i went but didnt think it would be that bad. it is bad and it smells like sewage. luckily the hotel has such nice pools and you cant really see the beach without walking down there. last gripe that did not affect us was the club playing extremely loud music. i felt bad for the people staying on that side of the hotel.
my suggestion is to do the all inclusive or stay somewhere out of town. playa use to be less commercialized and was very inexpensive to eat and drink along 5th avenue. this is not the case anymore. we did walk about 7-8 blocks away from beach and found some really good regular priced food. i will go back to mayan riveria and just go for the day to playa next time like i did on a previous trip. we went to couzemel for the day on a catamaran to get some good clean beach time in.
The Grand Club level makes the stay very special. Staff makes you feel welcome and is always very helpful. Food is delicious and plenty of it. Property is well kept and architecturally very beautiful. Great gym equipment. Well run hotel.
