On Mexico’s Caribbean coast, the ever-popular resort city of Playa del Carmen is packed with hotels, but on a quiet side street near the beach, El Taj Oceanfront & Beachside Condos offers amenities that set it apart. Condos are split between two buildings: The four-story El Taj Oceanfront stretches in a curve from the beach to the street, while El Taj Beachside snakes through lush gardens, past waterfalls and koi ponds. The open palms of a Buddha statue mark the entrance of Oceanfront, but both buildings exude an Asian-inspired serenity.
Bed and Bath
The condos are individually designed, but all have one to three bedrooms, separate living and dining areas and full kitchens outfitted with refrigerators and stoves. The homey vibe is deliberate, but you don’t have to worry about housework here: A private chef is available to prepare all meals (for a fee), and there’s free daily maid service. In the Oceanfront building, the three-bedroom penthouses have hot tubs with views of the ocean, as well as outdoor grills and seating areas that are made for gatherings.
El Taj’s Indigo Beach Club & Restaurant is a laid-back but sophisticated spot compared with some of the rowdier clubs in town. Everyone from families to singles set up camp on the comfy Balinese beach beds to take in the daytime scene while DJs spin in the background. Guests also have access to perks at the hotel’s two sister properties: the Gym, a fitness center just a few steps away at Porto Playa, and the spa at the affiliated Maya Villa.
In the Area
The surrounding Riviera Maya is filled with nature parks and impressive archaeological sites. Head south to explore the ancient cliffside Mayan ruins of Tulum; frolic with dolphins and snorkel over schools of tropical fish in the Caribbean Sea; and discover cenotes, aquatic sinkholes common in the Yucatan. For a dose of retail therapy, check out Playa del Carmen’s Fifth Avenue and sample tequila cocktails at a handful of lively local bars along the strip. Golfers can make the most of the ocean-facing golf courses in the region, including the top-notch Greg Norman–designed El Camaleón.
How to Get There
Everything at El Taj is just great! Let's start with the apartment: large living room with full kitchen (including coffee machine, microwave, grill and dishwasher), 3 TVs with cable (the one in the living room is a smart one so you can login with your Netflix/Prime/Youtube subscriptions), free wifi, A/C , 2 full bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, safe, daily housekeeping service and breakfast included! You can reply that resorts with all inclusive options might be a better solution, but I haven't found any resort that gives you all this living space (unless you are willing to pay for two separate rooms).
The service is great, there are two restaurants for breakfast open between 7 and 12 (Indigo on the beach, open until 1 during the weekend), and the Plank (with a brunch option until 2 every day), two swimming pool both with Jacuzzi (one is also hot tub). We have been here for 15 days in August and to my surprise we had the swimming pools pretty much to our complete disposal almost during the entire day (the place never seems "crowded"). The seaweed has been kind of an issue this summer, but it takes a quick walk on the docks or a 2 minutes swim to get into the clean water, and places like playa Mamitas seems to be way cleaner and it is just a few minutes walking. You can get fresh towels from the beach crew and if you want to stick around there are plenty of chairs and beach beds. Sunscreen, some books and beach toys are also available for free.
Everyone working here is extremely nice and always keen to help and make your experience here the best possible. Hugo, Roberto and the crew from Indigo are always available for last minutes orders (bar is open until 6 pm every day - good Piña Colada), so are Rudy and Isidro from the beach if you need towels, umbrellas or a first aid kit (one of the kids happened to step on a fish hook in the sea and was promptly taken care of).
The hotel is just steps away from the Quinta but still very quiet, and there are a lot of options for dinner just steps away (although my preferred option is alway "la Trattoria del Centro" between la Quinta and 26th, maybe a 7 minutes walk).
I hope you find this review useful, happy to answer questions if any.
Nice, clean rooms. Loved the location, the views and staff. Friendly staff always attentive. Beach, restaurants and shops are conveniently at a short walking distance. Bring comfortable shoes you will need them.

El Taj Oceanfront Condo is the one for u... the place is beautiful and clean... comfortable.... unfortunatel the food at the restaurant on property wasnt that great...however the location is great... and that is based on the fact that the hotel is jus 2 or 3 mins walk to the mall.. restaurants... and if u forget anything Walmart is 10mins walk!
