Sophisticated all-inclusive amid lagoons, mangroves and beachfront along Mexico's Riviera Maya

The Lowdown

Covering 36 acres of mangrove, lagoon, and powdery beachfront, the adults-only Blue Diamond has a sophistication that belies its proximity to Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Minimalist Zen rooms (all clean lines, high-quality marble, limestone, and polished bamboo, and floor-to-ceiling windows that keep the interiors bright) and an indoor/outdoor spa set the mood for relaxation, while all-inclusive rates banish mark-up stress. Adding to the Zen feel, Asian touches such as sliding Japanese doors and rock gardens remain from the property’s former life as a Mandarin Oriental. But unlike the buffet-driven properties in the nearby tourist towns, the service here is highly individualized. Think à la carte dining, customized minibars, and golf cart chauffeurs at your beck and call to whisk you between the two oceanfront pools—one for floating, one for laps—and spa, which features his-and-hers hammams. Unlike many full-service hotels, which rely on mass buffets, Blue Diamond serves à la carte dishes at the three on-site restaurants. Ambar, named for its stunning amber chandelier, offers fine dining and an occasion to dress up, while the more casual Aguamarina and the beach tapas bar have Caribbean views.

In the Area

Thirty minutes from the resort, Xel-Ha is a natural water park of lagoons and cenotes where you can swim with dolphins and manatees or trek along the seabed in a retro diving helmet. While the vibe at the resort is decidedly mellow, downtown Playa del Carmen is ideal for club hopping. Start the night with cocktails and ocean views at the Blue Parrot Beach Club and work your way up to the Vegas-style variety show at Congo Bongo. For a change from the international fare at the resort, sample traditional Mayan dishes such as tamales with goat cheese at Yaxche. Read more about what to see, eat and do on the Riviera Maya.

The facilities, particularly the expansive jungle like (but carefully manicured) grounds are breathtaking. Suites are large and very private. The pool and restaurant areas never feel crowded. Food offerings are solid. The upscale restaurant "Ambar" feels a bit dowdy, and the menu s really not more interesting than offerings at the more open spcae beachfront restaurant. The restaurant service fluctuates from excellent to slow. While the deposition of the staff is superb, there appear to be times of short staffing. A question as to why many unused day beds were reserved for "Circle members" was met with a relentless sales pitch to join a long term multiple visits program with considerable down payments. Beware! Simple requests such as a cork screw in the room or bicycle repairs had to be reiterated several times. It appears the staff wants to try hard, but the property is not managed all that well. A top hotel chain such as Four Seasons would transition this hotel to excellence with little effort. With proper management,, this resort would have deserved a 5 star rating.

Blue Diamond is a quaint, small wonderful adults only resort! While here, you eat gourmet prepared meals in a romantic atmosphere. The beach and spa are wonderful! The staff will do everything to please. For me...it's home away from home...a great place to unwind!

This is the second time we have stayed at the Blue Diamond adult only resort, the first was 4 years ago and in all honesty I have to say that the rooms are now looking a little tired and in need of some TLC however you just cannot get away from the way the wonderful staff make you feel so special and ambience of the resort. It feels quite small but is set in acres of land, when you first arrive it looks nothing from the kerbside as some of the other resorts do, in fact with the huge wooden doors which are opened at security it feel like you're entering Jurassic Park!!!! ....not so when you arrive at reception which itself is quite special. The feel of the place is total relaxation. As we booked via Expedia we were given a room upgrade to one of the lagoon views, although I didn't think the room was as nice as the Junior Patio Suite we stayed in last time, we saw so much more wildlife this time - turtles basking in the lagoon, an array of different birds,a coati who came onto our balcony and even a crocodile who came swimming past our room!!! The beach was wonderful as was the food and drink and nothing but nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff - the hotel was only running at 40% in peak season and I can't understand why as it's such a lovely resort.
The food is fantastic and all a la carte so no buffets with curling up food that has been stood for hours. Bicycles are plentiful if you want to take a ride around the grounds or get from your room to the beach or if you're feeling lazy you can ring for a ride any time. I just wish this place was a little closer to home as its a long way from the UK

Perfect Getaway

This place is the best! It is the perfect getaway for an adult weekend. This is our 3rd time staying here. We thought about trying a different place this time but I’m so glad we didn’t. If you are looking for a laid back/ relaxing trip Blue Diamond is the perfect place.
The meals are all delicious and it is all made to order not a buffet. The staff is super friendly and nice. Service by the pool is awesome!
When walking down the beach some of the resorts next door had a pretty bad seaweed problem but the Blue Diamond beach was great.
There is never an issue getting a chair at the beach or pool which is so nice to not have to deal with that.
We loved the Mexican night show! It was fun to watch while eating dinner.
Like any resort there is always the need for some updates like painting in areas around the exterior of the rooms but nothing huge. Out room was always perfectly clean and they even did a special anniversary decorating. Blue Diamond is an awesome place with friendly staff, a beautiful beach and great food!
