Covering 36 acres of mangrove, lagoon, and powdery beachfront, the adults-only Blue Diamond has a sophistication that belies its proximity to Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Minimalist Zen rooms (all clean lines, high-quality marble, limestone, and polished bamboo, and floor-to-ceiling windows that keep the interiors bright) and an indoor/outdoor spa set the mood for relaxation, while all-inclusive rates banish mark-up stress. Adding to the Zen feel, Asian touches such as sliding Japanese doors and rock gardens remain from the property’s former life as a Mandarin Oriental. But unlike the buffet-driven properties in the nearby tourist towns, the service here is highly individualized. Think à la carte dining, customized minibars, and golf cart chauffeurs at your beck and call to whisk you between the two oceanfront pools—one for floating, one for laps—and spa, which features his-and-hers hammams. Unlike many full-service hotels, which rely on mass buffets, Blue Diamond serves à la carte dishes at the three on-site restaurants. Ambar, named for its stunning amber chandelier, offers fine dining and an occasion to dress up, while the more casual Aguamarina and the beach tapas bar have Caribbean views.
In the Area
Thirty minutes from the resort, Xel-Ha is a natural water park of lagoons and cenotes where you can swim with dolphins and manatees or trek along the seabed in a retro diving helmet. While the vibe at the resort is decidedly mellow, downtown Playa del Carmen is ideal for club hopping. Start the night with cocktails and ocean views at the Blue Parrot Beach Club and work your way up to the Vegas-style variety show at Congo Bongo. For a change from the international fare at the resort, sample traditional Mayan dishes such as tamales with goat cheese at Yaxche. Read more about what to see, eat and do on the Riviera Maya.
How to Get There
Blue Diamond Luxury Resort is, as others have said, a very long narrow hilly resort (downhill fom the main lobby to the ocean) and for those who are happy to use bicycles to travel to the restaurants and pool/beach, it is a lovely setting with a path surrounded by trees and mangroves. There are also golf carts usually nearby if called to ferry you around.
The staff are the absolute best we have ever encountered in all our travels and a few stood out even from the high standard set: Salvador at the Pool Bar was amazing along with Manuel and Ivan in the evening - all so eager to please. Pedro was our principle server at Aguamarina and always made us feel special. Also, in the same restaurant, Roman was very helpful.
The room itself had a lovely design with both an indoor shower and an outdoor as well as a fancy bathtub. I hadn’t realized we’d booked a suite with a butler and thank goodness we did because she, Semanya, was very helpful to us with all the issues we had with our room in the beginning: on the day of our arrival, the air conditioning didn’t work and the toilet didn’t flush, that was seemingly fixed by 9:00 p.m.; the next morning we could only get scalding hot water to come from both taps (once the hot water got to the taps) and again we had to leave the room to allow for fixes. That’s where the “resto/bar” Ceviche came in handy to enjoy some snacks while waiting. As it turned out a root had invaded the cold-water pipe which had to be replaced. One other thing was that the TV had a loose connection making it “fiddly” to get it to come on every time and this was never rectified. This is what I meant by aging infrastructure. Semanya though matched our persistence in trying to get things done and we are grateful to her for her efforts.
Overall the food was good but not outstanding, with the following exceptions: there was a huge effort made for the Superbowl party which was fun (the party was better than the game), the “amuse-bouches” which arrived before every lunch and dinner were wonderful as were the desserts. Breakfast was also great, and they had no problem, we discovered, making whatever breakfast you wanted. Several dishes were wonderful the first time but didn’t deliver the second time around: duck tacos, duck at Ambar, Chipolte chicken wraps and I was most disappointed with the Chicken Molé on Mexican night as I have had wonderfully flavourful molé sauces in the past.
Overall, we enjoyed our vacation and were especially happy with the people who worked so hard to please everyone!
We’ve just returned from our second stay at this special place and must say, it keeps getting better and better!!
The resort is clean, inviting and simply special in every way!
We had massages by Rosario and Laura again and both my husband and I declared they were the best we’ve ever had! Everyone there is genuine and kind! Their smiles are contagious ..... some shout outs to several people that we had the pleasure of encountering during our stay that left a lasting impression on us in every great way!

Antonio - young golf cart too
Thank you everyone at Blue Diamond for making our vacation extra special and joyful!
We had the pleasure of traveling to Blue Diamond for a second year in a row. We traveled as part of a large group of coworkers and companies. The entire staff was friendly and many remembered us from last year. Despite our large group the staff at Blue Diamond remained cheerful and pampered us for our four days there. I especially wanted to thank Edward at the Aquamarine restaurant. He was sweet and courteous. Manuel, Carlos, and Salvador kept us in good spirits at the pool area bar. They were quick with good service, good drinks, and good conversation.
We had an awesome time! The staff and all the waiters and waitresses were amazing and super friendly! The room was clean with a great view with so much to do and a beautiful beach. There were so many options for food and drinks on the resort. The resort also had many options for different excursions and tours. Definitely a great time!
Edward took awesome care of us for our breakfast and dinner needs, Salvador and my new best friend Manuel took care of us the rest of the time! Easy to stay at a beautiful place, hard to find beautiful employees to help your time be amazing and relaxing! This place has a lot of them!
