Covering 36 acres of mangrove, lagoon, and powdery beachfront, the adults-only Blue Diamond has a sophistication that belies its proximity to Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Minimalist Zen rooms (all clean lines, high-quality marble, limestone, and polished bamboo, and floor-to-ceiling windows that keep the interiors bright) and an indoor/outdoor spa set the mood for relaxation, while all-inclusive rates banish mark-up stress. Adding to the Zen feel, Asian touches such as sliding Japanese doors and rock gardens remain from the property’s former life as a Mandarin Oriental. But unlike the buffet-driven properties in the nearby tourist towns, the service here is highly individualized. Think à la carte dining, customized minibars, and golf cart chauffeurs at your beck and call to whisk you between the two oceanfront pools—one for floating, one for laps—and spa, which features his-and-hers hammams. Unlike many full-service hotels, which rely on mass buffets, Blue Diamond serves à la carte dishes at the three on-site restaurants. Ambar, named for its stunning amber chandelier, offers fine dining and an occasion to dress up, while the more casual Aguamarina and the beach tapas bar have Caribbean views.
In the Area
Thirty minutes from the resort, Xel-Ha is a natural water park of lagoons and cenotes where you can swim with dolphins and manatees or trek along the seabed in a retro diving helmet. While the vibe at the resort is decidedly mellow, downtown Playa del Carmen is ideal for club hopping. Start the night with cocktails and ocean views at the Blue Parrot Beach Club and work your way up to the Vegas-style variety show at Congo Bongo. For a change from the international fare at the resort, sample traditional Mayan dishes such as tamales with goat cheese at Yaxche. Read more about what to see, eat and do on the Riviera Maya.
How to Get There
This was our third visit to Blue Diamond. We liked it enough to overlook a couple of problems the first and second time (hot water and AC have improved.) Guest relations manager Gabriella made sure that all of my concerns were addressed in advance this time. The small size of this quiet, adults only resort and privacy of all suites cut out of the jungle vegetation is very appealing. We stayed in a palafito suite which meant we had butler service. We really didn't need much, but they checked in regularly to make sure we had everything we needed. (Note: we had a balcony and upstairs deck but it was too hot and buggy right on the lagoon to take advantage of the outdoor spaces...remember, the interior of the resort is very natural/jungle.) Not having to make reservations for the restaurants and ordering from a menu (no buffets, and the food is very good) is also a plus. And there is never a problem getting a chair and umbrella on the beach or around the pool. The catamaran ride around the bay with Alejandro was a highlight, and I loved the spiritual experience with the shaman in the temazcal again this year. But the real prize is the staff throughout. The bellmen are all very professional, but warm and welcoming; the wait staff are eager to fulfill any request; the spa staff are top notch; and the bar staff at the pool (Armando, Jorge, Francesco and David) are outstanding and fun and made us laugh everyday. We feel very welcomed and well cared for at Blue Diamond. Yes, there is a challenge with the seaweed on the beach all along this coast, but BD works at it constantly. I'm not crazy about the "theme" nights around the pool restaurant (Aguamarine) three nights a week, so we go the other restaurant, the Ambar on those nights. The resort is a long narrow property and one must either ride a bike or call for a golf cart to get around. Waiting for a golf cart to pick you up sounds like an inconvenience, but it really isn't. They arrive promptly when called and the drivers are very, very nice (Luis and I wish I could remember other names.) Perhaps there are more "refined" resort options on the Riviera Maya, but not at this price/value. It helped emailing with Gabriella in advance of our trip so that there was a complete understanding of our desires and expectations. We'll return. Muchas gracias and hugs all around to all of the lovely staff.
My partner and I just finished a relaxing 4-night trip @ Blue Diamond and honestly cannot say enough great things! From the outset, we were treated like kings. The staff is so thoughtful and attentive. Specifically want to call out our butler Samanya who was incredible! She made sure everything was perfect! Ivan @ the pool bar was amazing. David who worked the bar and at Aquamarine kept our drinks full and always greeted us with a warm smile. I strongly encourage everyone to order the 'David's Special' cocktail...Delicious!!
Can't wait to get back!
After a terrible experience at the BlueBay Grand Esmerelda, we were upgraded here and all i can say is WOW. The resort is stunning, the staff is absolutely phenomenal and the food is superb. The beach is gorgeous. The rooms are all junior suites with their own little backyards. Amazing rooms. My fiance and I have decided that is is going to be our honeymoon destination next year. We are beyond happy with our experience.
My husband and I visited end of June for 11 nights we were amazed at the look of the hotel, it was like villas all set up in the jungle so to speak. The trees and the plants was so beautiful and the whole place was kept clean. We Loved our room very much it was so spacious and comfortable and the cleaners did a good job to keep it that way. The food was nice but after 7 days it seemed a bit of the same thing, there is not much entertainment only 3 days but it was good.
Although I know the hotel was for those who wanted peace & quiet but I feel that more could of been done for the evenings a bit more light entertainment maybe a little dancing with your partner at the Amber restaurant that would of been nice to finish the evening. One thing I did not u understand is that you get 1 toilet roll a day for your room, we had to ask on two occasions for more because with the different diet and two people sharing a room you really do go threw them fast also the mini bar only gets replenished if you ask that should not be the case seeing that we paid a lot of money to be at this hotel. I would like to thank Manuel at the pool bar he really works very hard and quick at what he does, also I would like to thank Luis, Alberto drivers of the cards, Priscillian, Victor, Jose and David amazing waiters thank you for your service. All in all we had a very relaxing and nice holiday.
We had just the most wonderful time at the Blue Diamond resort. My husband and I came here for our honeymoon and spent a romantic and beautiful week here. We took other’s advice on trip advisor and booked a Junior Patio Suite which was sufficient for us. From the time of booking to the very end, the quality of service we received at Blue Diamond has been top notch. From Javier at Reservas, making sure all we needed was in place before our trip, to Francesca, our beloved concierge who sat with us for as long as we wanted and needed to plan our days and give us tips on where to go and what to do... to the fabulous waitstaff (Hermanio, Leo, Dagostino) and drivers (Jonathan, Luis) around the resort whom we all got to know by name. The entire staff at Blue Diamond made us feel welcome and as if we were part of their family. We cannot thank them enough for a forever memorable and special experience. We will return for sure!
