Covering 36 acres of mangrove, lagoon, and powdery beachfront, the adults-only Blue Diamond has a sophistication that belies its proximity to Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Minimalist Zen rooms (all clean lines, high-quality marble, limestone, and polished bamboo, and floor-to-ceiling windows that keep the interiors bright) and an indoor/outdoor spa set the mood for relaxation, while all-inclusive rates banish mark-up stress. Adding to the Zen feel, Asian touches such as sliding Japanese doors and rock gardens remain from the property’s former life as a Mandarin Oriental. But unlike the buffet-driven properties in the nearby tourist towns, the service here is highly individualized. Think à la carte dining, customized minibars, and golf cart chauffeurs at your beck and call to whisk you between the two oceanfront pools—one for floating, one for laps—and spa, which features his-and-hers hammams. Unlike many full-service hotels, which rely on mass buffets, Blue Diamond serves à la carte dishes at the three on-site restaurants. Ambar, named for its stunning amber chandelier, offers fine dining and an occasion to dress up, while the more casual Aguamarina and the beach tapas bar have Caribbean views.
In the Area
Thirty minutes from the resort, Xel-Ha is a natural water park of lagoons and cenotes where you can swim with dolphins and manatees or trek along the seabed in a retro diving helmet. While the vibe at the resort is decidedly mellow, downtown Playa del Carmen is ideal for club hopping. Start the night with cocktails and ocean views at the Blue Parrot Beach Club and work your way up to the Vegas-style variety show at Congo Bongo. For a change from the international fare at the resort, sample traditional Mayan dishes such as tamales with goat cheese at Yaxche. Read more about what to see, eat and do on the Riviera Maya.
How to Get There
This review is embarrassingly long overdue. But my heart is with this resort so it was never forgotten. Please see my first review for details on how special and unique the grounds and location are - this is an absolutely magical spot! We enjoyed our first stay so much that we returned with two other couples in May of 2018. Gabriella helped us tremendously with planning and rooms and our butler Jorge made special arrangements prior to the trip to celebrate a birthday and a wedding anniversary. Both were overly attentive and helpful once we were there as well. Thanks Jorge and the attentive butler staff! And thank you Gabriella for everything! You are the best! Management really strives to make improvements. I noticed that the few minor things I had mentioned in my first review we amended on my second trip. They even arranged to have two standup paddle boards there for us this time! We weren't as fortunate with the weather, clear waters or wildlife (although the crocodile and turtles were there!!!) in May, but that is just timing. The staff made up for any disappointments! Our heartfelt thanks to our favorite employee, Sandra, who remembered us from the first trip and took care of us each morning at breakfast. This woman is a gem. And many thanks to all of the other wonderful employees including: David, Pedro, Leo, Hermino, Luis, Salvador, Manuel, and Ivan. Our sincerest apologies to anyone we left out Everyone is so kind and hardworking we should have named each and everyone of you! One last mention is for the head chef Jonas Irurzo. He took pride in all of the meal planning and execution. And he even prepared a special meal with the fresh fish that my husband and friend caught on a fishing expedition. It was delicious and special! We appreciated everyone that assisted in making it possible. Anyway, I could go on and on. I love this boutique resort and al of the caring employees that take such pride in making it a remarkable experience for the guests!
Spent 11 nights at this lovely hotel late September, early October 2018. Originally booked a Palafitos Suite but had to upgrade to a Luxury Junior Patio Suite with private pool as we was disappointed with these rooms overlooking the lagoon. The stairs to the roof top terrace are in need of repair and the decking area is shabby, the canopy from the room below are in need of painting and this is the reason why we have only given it 4 stars. We had 2 wonderful Butlers Samanya and Sandra who assisted us during our stay to overcome the above issues. Samanya was outstanding in organising the upgrade which we did have to pay a further £600 for. However the room was beautiful and worth the extra money. We spent time in the private garden where we had a couple of Coati's visit us a few times and enjoyed dips in the private pool. Samanya also organised a special table in the Aquamarine restaurant and decorated our room to help celebrate a birthday and retirement which was the reason for the trip. These 2 ladies are outstanding in their roles and we cannot thank them enough and it was sad saying goodbye to them. Thank you ladies you are great ambassadors for Blue Diamond. Everywhere is very clean and tidy and the staff all seem to work very hard to maintain a high standard. The pool area is lovely but again the wooden decking is in need of replacing. We had a reserved Cabana on the beach which was also a lovely extra. The restaurants are lovely and the food is excellent in both restaurants. All the waiters are fabulous and work long hours. Leo, Jose David and Pedro are outstanding and made us feel very welcome every day thank you guys. We made use of the golf buggies due to the location of the room and Luis and Custavo where always waiting to pick us up and take us backwards and forwards even when we had down pours of rain and spoke excellent English, thank you both. The Spa is also worth a visit and we enjoyed a couple of treatments. The hotel setting is unusual but very pretty which really makes this hotel different and worth a visit. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed a quite, leisurely holiday. A BIG THANK YOU again to Samanya who made our visit so special you are truly a remarkable lady. XX
We just returned from our second visit at the Blue Diamond and had a wonderful time. Other reviewers are correct that the hotel is showing some wear and tear, but it does't take much away from the amazing experience at the hotel. The staff are superb and cater to your every need, the food is delicious, and the architecture and landscaping are beautiful.
The staff work hard to keep the beach clean, and they do a great job. If the beach isn't your thing, lounge at the nearby pool and you can still take in the views. We went for a walk down the beach during our stay and both my fiance and I noticed that the Blue Diamond looks like oasis as you come upon it on the beach. The building that houses Aquamarine restaurant looks amazing from the beach and really signals that the resort is something special.
In fact, we're hoping to host our wedding there next year so that our friends and family can enjoy as well!
This resort was fantastic in every way. Coming home I am a little disappointed that my photos do not really do the place justice.
First of all, my favorite part about Blue Diamond is the architecture, design and beauty of the place. The rooms are gorgeous, huge and full of beautiful stone wood and glass. This theme is throughout the entire hotel, where the design of the restaurants is breathtaking, and beautiful limestone and glass buildings are all throughout. Whoever designed this place deserves an award.
Second only to architecture and design is the food. I have been to Cuba before and Mexico twice before but the food has never compared to this resort. It was truly fantastic and delicious at every meal. The crispy beef tacos, the sushi, the filet mignon steak, the Mexican style eggs benedict, everything was fantastic. The tortillas are made fresh, the cuts of meat are delicious and every meal at the two main restaurants were a hit for us.
Finally, the service; everyone was awesome. People are incredibly helpful and accommodating. I probably did not take full advantage of some of the service benefits as I am not used to being catered to at such a high level. The service at meals were prompt and professional, the turn down service is very nice with new sheets each day, chords organized, clothing folded etc.
If you are looking for a relaxing, gorgeous childfree resort I would highly recommend Blue Diamond. I will not be returning to another resort in the Mayan Riviera.
Very few and far between. If you are looking for an immaculate maintained space where everything feels 100% brand new and there is not even a small detail off then this may fall short for you. If you search hard you will find the occasional small flaw, like a sun blind that isn't fully clean, or a tap with rust on it at the sea washrooms. That is the reality of being close to the sea, and not paying 10,000 plus USD for a week hotel stay. It did not take away from our vacation at all, and I truly believe it could not be improved at this price point. This was easily the most beautiful place I have ever been to and it is maintained very well.
Our trip exceeded our expectations and we highly recommend staying here to any couple.
We were married at Blue Diamond Luxury Boutique Hotel on 8/18/18 and it has taken me 6 weeks to write a review because I’m not sure how to completely describe the most magical week of our lives.
Our entire wedding group (approx 45 people) was treated to the greatest level of service that any of us had ever experienced.
As many of us as possible, given the availability, were upgraded to larger rooms. My husband and i were given the beach front Casita that had private entry to the beach, 2 private patios and a roof top balcony with an infinity pool and day bed. That also included a cabana on the beach just in front of our room.
The room was so big that we invited all of our guests over every night that we were on the resort and we all enjoyed the wonderful room service after restaurant hours.
I spent a glorious day at the spa having a massage, mani/pedi and had my hair washed.
We took a really great private yoga class where they served us this wonderful herbal tea after.
Guests of ours also took part in the sailboat rides and we rode our bikes everywhere!
The food on the resort was absolutely unbelievable. 3 restaurants, room service, wine tasting, our rehearsal dinner, the tasting menu for the wedding and the wedding meal plus wedding cake were OUT OF THIS WORLD! The cocktails were also top notch and very creative when they would make us a drink in a piece of fruit!
Now to discuss the wedding! I knew in my heart that it would be great (planning a destination wedding from Las Vegas NV left us having to trust the resort and decor company whole heartedly) however, what we were presented on the most important day of our lives was something that only dreams are made of! Getting ready we were given any and every single thing that we could possibly need or want to make the process as easy as possible. Our Butler Jorge made sure that we never went without any little thing. His glowing personality was simply and added joy to our experience. Willing to do anything we asked even running to find a roll of tape and fans for the hair and makeup team. Our wedding coordinator Yadira made sure the timing was right, the decor was in place and that everything flowed flawlessly. Doing anything she could to make our stay the best it could be and always meeting us with her sweet laugh. Our server Salvador, i have no words for how spectacular he is not just at his job but as a person. He waited on us hand and foot the entire day while we prepped for such a huge event and then was the lead of the wait staff during our reception. Salvador poured his heart into our entire group and our wedding day. He is easily one of the greatest people any of us have ever been blessed to know. Our bellman Gustavo was also a saving grace and he went above and beyond in every situation. He has such a kind soul and made sure that we made it safely and timely to each of our events. Gilberto was our server on the beach every day and surprised us with themed cocktails and coordinated a private breakfast on our patio the last day of our stay with a bottle of champagne. He was so thoughtful and kind.
The staff at blue diamond is incomparable. It didn’t matter where we were or what we were doing on the resort we were met with smiles, kind words, impeccable service and the best part is they all touch their hearts as they greet you.
I will admit that i cried leaving Blue Diamond because it was the greatest trip we had ever taken and for it to have been during the most meaningful moments of our life is something we will cherish forever.
