Covering 36 acres of mangrove, lagoon, and powdery beachfront, the adults-only Blue Diamond has a sophistication that belies its proximity to Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Minimalist Zen rooms (all clean lines, high-quality marble, limestone, and polished bamboo, and floor-to-ceiling windows that keep the interiors bright) and an indoor/outdoor spa set the mood for relaxation, while all-inclusive rates banish mark-up stress. Adding to the Zen feel, Asian touches such as sliding Japanese doors and rock gardens remain from the property’s former life as a Mandarin Oriental. But unlike the buffet-driven properties in the nearby tourist towns, the service here is highly individualized. Think à la carte dining, customized minibars, and golf cart chauffeurs at your beck and call to whisk you between the two oceanfront pools—one for floating, one for laps—and spa, which features his-and-hers hammams. Unlike many full-service hotels, which rely on mass buffets, Blue Diamond serves à la carte dishes at the three on-site restaurants. Ambar, named for its stunning amber chandelier, offers fine dining and an occasion to dress up, while the more casual Aguamarina and the beach tapas bar have Caribbean views.
In the Area
Thirty minutes from the resort, Xel-Ha is a natural water park of lagoons and cenotes where you can swim with dolphins and manatees or trek along the seabed in a retro diving helmet. While the vibe at the resort is decidedly mellow, downtown Playa del Carmen is ideal for club hopping. Start the night with cocktails and ocean views at the Blue Parrot Beach Club and work your way up to the Vegas-style variety show at Congo Bongo. For a change from the international fare at the resort, sample traditional Mayan dishes such as tamales with goat cheese at Yaxche. Read more about what to see, eat and do on the Riviera Maya.
How to Get There
Me and my wife liked our trip to Blue Diamond earlier in June, for my birthday. Checked-in was the smoothest I ever had,no lines no stress, ready to accommodate my requests, and the personnel saluted with my last name on my arrival. Room, facilities and surroundings are gorgeous. Attention to the details and quality of service is what set this resort apart of the croweded Riviera Maya resorts. Shoot out to Abril at frontdesk, David at the ceviche bar, Pedro the bellboy and everyone else that made our time pleasant. Temazcal, spa, infinity pool, cenote were nice experiences.
Few things that can be done better:
-Lack of a bar/serving alcohol closer to the spa area. If you need a cocktail you have to go back to the beach/pool 1mile away.
- especially dinners can be done better. Also, the rest of the evening reserves not much entertainment.
-it happens that our hot water was not working when we needed the most, at night time. I brought this back to them when I left.
-the only complain for the personnel is the cleaning team. While the room. Was cleaned and we'll kept, the timing of cleaning was off. The roomkeeper has to adjust to my schedule not the way around. Every time we went back to the room after lunch we have to wait for the guy to finish up. Additionaly, in one instance a roomkeeper enter to our room without knowing at all!
Great place to celebrate and/or to vacation. The service was excellent. The staff so friendly and courteous ready to do whatever to make your stay great. We just added the honeymoon package because it was free when booking but they made it so we did actually have a honeymoon. Pictures included. Every day was a surprise. Food excellent every one of them.
First and foremost, the location and setting is amazing. It feels as though you have your own private jungle just outside your room. It's quiet, private, and bustling with wildlife. The beach is excellent and they work tirelessly to remove the incoming seaweed. Though it's clearly a losing battle...
The staff are all amazing and very helpful. Most spoke English impeccably and truly want you to enjoy your time. The food was mostly amazing--just stay away from the American touristy items like pizza.
My two biggest issues were: mildew and housekeeping. The room absolutely stinks of mildew and I discovered significant black mold in the closet. The scent was so bad that after two washings and several days after returning, every single piece of clothing that was in the room with us still stinks very strongly of mildew. While hard to eliminate at a tropical resort, nearly every space we entered had this overpowering smell. It saturates everything, including your hair. This is enough reason for us not to return.
The other issue is constantly not having the minibar restocked with basics like water and coffee. I had to call several times to get these items. Also, since there doesn't seem to be a do not disturb sign, housekeeping tried 3 times in one day to enter the room to clean. If I say no to housekeeping I don't want them to keep trying all day. Same with turn down service.
Where do I begin?! There is so much to rave about this resort! For starters, we were greeted with a lovely drink and dark chocolate upon arrival. We arrived at 0630 when check in is at 3pm. They were so nice and stored our luggage for us until our room was available. In the meantime, they allowed us to enjoy the entire resort at our leisure! We were able to eat, enjoy beverages on the beach and lounge in the meantime! They even offered to bring us our luggage so we could shower and change in the spa if necessary. Eduardo, the bell boy was amazing in keeping us updated on the status of our room! He transported us to our room and gave us a tour of the facility.
Room: Upon arriving to the room, we were surprised at how big the room is! We stayed in what we thought would be the most basic room (cheapest one), but to our surprise it was so large & spacious! The bed was a cal king, filled with comfortable pillows! The bathroom had two standing showers that were great! The showers even had a door that led into the outdoor tub that could be filled by staff upon request. It also had a nice closet with storage drawers. Not to mention the outdoor patio had two lounge chairs next to the outdoor tub and a table with seating. Given the heat and humidity, the room was cool and comfortable the whole time!
Food: Despite there only being 3 restaurants at the resort, the food was AMAZING! Literally everything I ate was a party in my mouth every time! All three restaurants offered a variety of options, from meat to veggie options. Aquamarina offered great breakfast, lunch and dinner! The service was awesome too! Pedro, Ernesto Dagoberto were amazing at Aquamarina! They were so polite and kind! Literally made us feel at home. Always so courteous! Ambar offered amazing cuisine for dinner as well! My boyfriend and I loved everything we ate there! Can't go without saying that Luis our server was amazing! Despite us being indecisive, he was so patient and helpful! He went out of his way to make our evening at Ambar memorable! Very attentive to detail as well! Lastly the Ceviche bar was our hangout spot! We were eating there almost every day! So many options, from ceviche (multiple kinds) to pizza! They had it all! Not to mention the amazing service by Jose David! He went above and beyond on my birthday and every day for that matter, to make sure were happy with our food. Offering us drinks, checking on us consistently and he even noticed that I love tequila and served me drinks on my birthday without asking me, showing his attention to detail! Jose David even followed up on the next day to see how my birthday went. This gentleman is the epitome of hospitality!
We can't forget Ivan at the pool bar! I can't go without saying that he is amazing! He was always so courteous and attentive! Provided amazing service and such a great attitude! Always smiling and sharing his positive vibes! He always tried to make us drinks we would enjoy and caught on to our likings quickly! Not to mention, he listened to our shenanigans after having a few drinks!
Extras: Can't go on without saying that the ladies at the spa were also so nice & kind! Helped us get into the steam room and offered water as well. Not to mention the best part of our stay was the Temazcal. The shaman and her assistant are amazing: Adela and Laura! They made us feel comfortable as we had never experienced a Temazcal. They were explained the ritual well and walked us through it, making sure we were comfortable. Needless to say, it's a must try when attending the resort!
Furthermore, the all inclusive is amazing! The spa includes many things that are often at charge in other so called all inclusive hotels. The spa offers the temazcal, steam room and heated pool at no extra charge.
Adela at the concierge went above and beyond in making sure that I was surprised with rose petals, balloons and a birthday card! She was so kind and helpful in scheduling our activities! I even observed her ensuring a fellow client made it to her room safely after having too many drinks! She even scheduled the bikes to be delivered to our rooms.
Lastly, I can't finish without saying that the groundskeepers, gardeners and the individuals cleaning up beach were all polite and diligent in keeping the facility impeccable! The facility needs a lot of maintenance as it's in the middle of the jungle. Every day we observed them cleaning up the facility, sanitizing the walk ways & all! As we all know, the sargassum (seaweed) problem is all along the coast, but upon walking up and down the beach we noticed that Blue Diamond had the cleanest beach! They were working around the clock! Sunrise to sunset! They are the real MVPs!
Only complaint: hire the music band for the weekends too! Makes great ambiance!
I have never been to an all-inclusive before so I was so hesitant for this 5-night trip, but within the first hour I was glad my partner convinced us to come to one. It was so relaxing to not have to many any decisions about which beach to check out or where to eat. The minute we arrived, concierge placed a drink in our hand and we head straight to the pool and beach. I don't think we left the cabana there for the entire duration of the trip. Our favorite aspect of the trip was getting to know the staff there. David, waiter from the restaurant, was always a fun person to interact with at the end of the day. Gustavo was incredibly helpful carting us around, offering tips, and had fun explaining all the animals located at the hotel. Ivan from the bar was GREAT! He was our favorite part of the day. He surprised us with so many tropical drinks and fun fruit concoctions and we loved chatting with him. I'm actually so sad that I couldn't say goodbye our last night there! At the end of our trip, we had the pleasure of meeting Eduardo who was super attentive to making sure our check-out was as smooth as possible and then the wonderful lady at the desk whose name starts with an A (Acescily? I'm really terrible with names, sorry!). The hotel staff all knew how to make us feel at home and on a fun, relaxing vacation and I'm sure had I met more the staff, they would be on the list too.
The hotel rooms are mini villas. So spacious and they make you feel like your royalty. Loved the two showers with large windows to enjoy the tropical rain forest.
Food was really great and we weren't tired of the restaurants after spending 5 days there.
We would be so happy to come back.
