Soak up the sun in style at this sleek beachfront base in Akumal. A huge part of its appeal is its aesthetic, pairing traditional elements from around the Yucatán with contemporary lines and colors. But to focus on the fabulous design of its three pools, chic accommodations and glam common areas is to neglect the ways in which UNICO makes your stay feel—and not only look—amazing. Though you’ll spend plenty of time enjoying the diverse dining program that highlights local ingredients. A rotation of chefs heads up the dining program (including a former Top Chef Mexico contestant), to keep things fresh—expect a wide array of flavors and cuisines (everything from Mexican to Japanese) in addition to a cocktail lounge and cigar bar. The full-service spa is home to a fully equipped hydrotherapy facility and dispenses a host of luxurious wellness therapies, like a massage with volcanic stones and a facial designed specifically for sensitive skin, while the salon houses a barbershop with a beer-and-bourbon cart. An extensive fitness program invites you to enjoy a refreshing workout at the well-equipped gym, attend a beachfront class, or practice yoga or meditation. The real highlight, though, is the all-inclusive rate. You’ll receive all meals, pool and beach service, 24-hour room service, nightly events, select spa treatments and golfing tee times, among other things. And if that sounds like a lot to keep track of, you’ll also have a local host to do so for you. And to wash, iron and steam your clothes, so that you can dress as impeccably as your surroundings.
In the Area
You’ll likely spend most of your days lounging on the private beach or by one of the three pools, including the 20°87° pool, which features rafts and sets by a DJ. Head off-site to take a guided tour of a regional destination, like Chichen Itza, Garrafon Natural Reef Park, a cenote and the Mayan ruins at Coba and Tulum. You may set up a local golfing tee time, as well, or an outing to swim with wild dolphins. The resort is located just over 50 miles from Cancun International Airport and can be reached by car in about an hour.
How to Get There
My four sisters and I were looking for a warm, chill, safe, easy and beautiful place to get away in late winter, and we were so pleased with our choice.
The rooms at Unico were clean and well appointed. The resort is easy to navigate and elegant - simple cool stone and teak everywhere.
We loved the choices of pools, the exercise classes and the activity options - we weren’t looking to be super active and snorkling w the turtles was the perfect option. The beach was less of a draw - small and full of seaweed while we were there. But the water was warm and gorgeous. We were blessed with perfect weather our whole mid-March visit.
Most wonderful about Unico were its people.
We loved our friendly and helpful waiters Raul, at Cueva Siete and Juan Carlos at Restaurant 20-87.
Monso was our adorable yoga teacher - zen and relaxing! And Sergio the salsa instructor was engaging and fun - and a very good teacher! We went back to the infinity pool several days because of its ocean breeze and view and because Poncho took such good care of us. We also appreciated the guidance and help of Alejandro at Travel Makers for the snorkeling trip.
The restaurant options and food quality are well above a typical all-inclusive.
Unico is definitely more geared to couples and low-key relaxing. If you’re looking for a big Cancun party, go somewhere else and leave this serene, beautiful place to us!
This is a lovely resort, and I don’t regret booking it, we had a fantastic time at Unico.
Rooms, as the whole property are beautifully designed, with a lot of thoughtful local touches. Housekeeping was perfect. We had one of the ground floor rooms, with the swim-up pool, which given the fact that there are plenty of beautiful pools to swim in we never used. I had booked the hotel about six months in advance and got an excellent rate.
Service was excellent throughout, and the staff was absolutely lovely. The beach and pool service never stopped really. We spend most of our time at the quiet pool or the beach. The quiet pool was very beautiful, and never busy. The beach is a bit rocky in the central bit, and you have to go to the northern end, right at the boundary of the property, where it’s fine. The main pool was a tad too noisy for us, especially when the party got going in the afternoon – I suppose this comes with all-inclusive hotels, even at the higher end.
The excellent room service always worked like clockwork, on days that we went for excursions, we ordered from the app and had breakfast delivered to the room.
Overall the food was very good and having a choice of restaurants as always was a real plus. Booking was not an issue, but we normally booked a few days ahead, but I think they always keep table for walk-up bookings.
We enjoyed Cueva Siete for the food, but found the restaurant lacked a bit atmosphere, and the outside patio felt a bit like an afterthought. The Italian was good, but not better than your good local pizzeria. The pan-Asian restaurant had excellent sushi and sashimi, but the hot options and the show cooking were average. The beachside restaurant made a good steak. All in all, the food was good, but somewhat overhyped on the website, it’s good but not quite a gourmet experience. Maybe we are spoiled but what we thought was really missing was a bit more of a fine dining option. Also, for lunch there is only a buffet at the beachside grill. I’d expect a la carte options in a 5-star. We settled for pool/beach service on most days, so not a massive problem.
One thing we didn’t really liked was that the hotel was not really set up for outdoor dining, patio spaces felt a bit like an afterthought, and that apart from the grill the restaurants were away from the beach. It felt a bit like eating in a shopping mall at times. Same applies to the bars, we loved Bar Balam, but would have preferred to sip our cocktails by the beach.
We did a number of excursions, and the signature excursions to Kaan Luum, Tulum and Muyil were superb. We also did the ziplining, one of the inclusions, which was great fun, but with a million other tourists.
The spa is first class, and the treatments great value. The gym is also one of the best hotel gyms I’ve been to.
The hotel caters for large events, which can disrupt your holiday pleasure. At some point during our 10-day stay, a very rowdy crowd arrived for a conference, and several loud parties went on in the block late into the night, something the hotel struggled to control, not worthy of a 5-star that wants to be a Leading Hotel of the World.
All in all, this is a very good hotel with excellent service and facilities, and if you book it at the right price you won’t be disappointed.
Went in February with my wife. Had an awesome week! The property is beautiful and the service was exceptional. Food was high quality and the drinks were amazing. Luis is a master mixologist and Oscar at the quiet pool has a few tricks of his own.
I was told the beach was small and not spectacular before we booked it and found that to be true, but with the pools and the beautiful setting we didn’t seem to mind.
Loved: No bracelets, no WiFi passwords, easy check in. Rooms are beautiful (the robes, mini bar and toiletries are above and beyond any resort I have stayed at)and the hotel grounds well kept. The spa tub on the deck is wonderful for a post pool dip or after dinner relaxation. Drinks and food thru out the resort are very fresh and above average.
Nicolas at Mi Carisa, Nicolas at Mura, and Ricardo at 2087 were really a gems and made our dining experience excellent. Pool service was exceptional, Pancho and JC took excellent care of us.
Like: There is pool staff to help find you a spot and also bring over an umbrella if you need it. The resort allows a bit of a towel game with people reserving the best locations and loungers without using them most of the day.
The “local host” program has some inconsistencies. Some guests raved about all the extra touches they received. We were contacted thru WhatsApp but never met our host in person. He did help with confirming our transportation to the airport and asking the timeshare salesman to stop calling our room at 9am.
Dislike: “Legends” only pool area. We booked this resort because there was no “premium level” and all guests are the same level of all inclusive. Only to find an entire section of the pool is off limits. We also felt that the conventions on site did impact our dining experience with large groups taking up entire seating areas and the attention of the whole staff (and the bartender). There were large tables set up off the lobby as well to coordinate the people attending the conventions. It all was a bit distracting and impacted the overall relaxed feeling of the resort.
I traveled to Unico this past week for a trip with my family. It was not my first time in Mexico, but it was my first time doing an all inclusive resort. I was a little trepidatious because, for this particular trip, I was looking for something other than the standard "chicken fingers and rail vodka" kind of place that I'd read so much about at other places. I also wasn't looking for a 24/7 party. I really wanted somewhere I could go and relax, enjoy some delicious food, and lay out on the beach. Let me tell you, this resort did NOT disappoint.
The world class service at this location is the first thing I have to talk about. I have never stayed in a hotel or resort with service like it is here. The staff are so friendly, attentive, and helpful. I don't recall a single point in my stay where I didn't have absolutely everything I wanted; The staff are constantly walking around the pool and beach area making sure everyone is served. This place is "service with a smile" on an entirely different level. As you're walking around the resort, the people working there smile and say hello every time. It seems like a detail that might not matter when considering where to book your vacation, but I have to say it made the entire atmosphere so comfortable and welcoming, and really elevated the experience. You get the impression that hospitality and first class service are most definitely the top priority here. They provide you with a local host for your room who you can text any time you want to set up any and all experiences. Our assigned host, Pascual, was absolutely amazing. He set up everything from craft cocktails being delivered to our room for turndown service to drawing a bath with rose petals at a requested time (complete with a glass of wine). He even made sure we had all the right pillows (they have many options). I think the thing that impressed me the most about Pascual was the fact that every single day he made a point to find us by the pool or beach just to check in with us in person about our stay and to make sure we had everything we needed. He remembered details of our reservations and preferences off the top of his head, and really made us feel like we were a priority. Cannot say enough wonderful things about how special he made our experience. They even offer an aromatherapy option for your room, just one of the many details that sets this resort apart from other places I've stayed. Aside from the day to day amazing service we received, the service at the restaurants on the property is also incredible.
The food. I can't even tell you how impressed I was by the food. I was impressed, not only the novelty of being able to eat whatever you want at any time of the day, but the quality of the food. The Japanese restaurant is probably the best one they have (we ate there for 2 different dinners), but that's not to say the others aren't good. they're all good. We even got to have a really cool Hibachi dinner with Yumi, the first female hibachi chef Ive ever had. It was really entertaining and super delicious. Whether you're having breakfast delivered (which I did many mornings while reading a book on the balcony in my bathrobe), going to one of the lavish buffets, or enjoying tacos and snacks by the pool. you really can't go wrong.
The drinks at Unico are also quite a treat. The bar staff are incredibly knowledgeable and efficient. We never had to wait to be served and everything was always mixed perfectly. They have several bars to choose from, all with different vibes. the main bar in the lobby is huge and is surrounded by tables, couches, chairs, and gathering areas. It's the perfect place for a pre or post dinner cocktail (or both).
The last thing I have to comment on with this resort is the smell. Everything in this hotel somehow smells AMAZING. I honestly have no idea how they do it, but the place is always sparkling clean and smells incredible. And I'm not just talking about the rooms, im talking about the common spaces, the pool, the hallways. all of it smells like you're in a spa. (I should mention, too, that I had a massage at their spa and it was unbelievable. took advantage of the hot stone bed and eucalyptus steam room afterwards. Felt like I was walking on a cloud all day after).
Overall, I really don't have a single complaint or negative thing to say about this resort. If you're looking for an all around amazing vacation with wonderful service and views that look like their plucked from a postcard, this is the place to go. You won't be disappointed. Unico, thanks for the best vacation ever! I will most definitely be back.
