Soak up the sun in style at this sleek beachfront base in Akumal. A huge part of its appeal is its aesthetic, pairing traditional elements from around the Yucatán with contemporary lines and colors. But to focus on the fabulous design of its three pools, chic accommodations and glam common areas is to neglect the ways in which UNICO makes your stay feel—and not only look—amazing. Though you’ll spend plenty of time enjoying the diverse dining program that highlights local ingredients. A rotation of chefs heads up the dining program (including a former Top Chef Mexico contestant), to keep things fresh—expect a wide array of flavors and cuisines (everything from Mexican to Japanese) in addition to a cocktail lounge and cigar bar. The full-service spa is home to a fully equipped hydrotherapy facility and dispenses a host of luxurious wellness therapies, like a massage with volcanic stones and a facial designed specifically for sensitive skin, while the salon houses a barbershop with a beer-and-bourbon cart. An extensive fitness program invites you to enjoy a refreshing workout at the well-equipped gym, attend a beachfront class, or practice yoga or meditation. The real highlight, though, is the all-inclusive rate. You’ll receive all meals, pool and beach service, 24-hour room service, nightly events, select spa treatments and golfing tee times, among other things. And if that sounds like a lot to keep track of, you’ll also have a local host to do so for you. And to wash, iron and steam your clothes, so that you can dress as impeccably as your surroundings.
In the Area
You’ll likely spend most of your days lounging on the private beach or by one of the three pools, including the 20°87° pool, which features rafts and sets by a DJ. Head off-site to take a guided tour of a regional destination, like Chichen Itza, Garrafon Natural Reef Park, a cenote and the Mayan ruins at Coba and Tulum. You may set up a local golfing tee time, as well, or an outing to swim with wild dolphins. The resort is located just over 50 miles from Cancun International Airport and can be reached by car in about an hour.
How to Get There
Arrived at the resort expecting an amazing place because of all great reviews I read before getting there. To my surprise everyy thing exceeded my expectations, from the moment we entered the front lobby to the day we walked out the door to go home. It takes a lot of people to run an astonishing resort like this. There were definitely as few people that made out stay extra great. Our host Kristel LH, there wasn’t enough she could do for us. She would always check in to see if we needed anything, from making sure a patio bathtub was filled to even going as far as making the room special for my boyfriend birthday. We walked in the room that night to be surprised by balloons, Champagne and best of all a piñata. She certainly knows how to make people feels special. She was such a warm hearted person. Luis Torres at the pool, he is just the friendly sweetest guy the Unico should be delighted to have him working there. He made sure everyday that we had cold water and a little something extra for me, Coke Zero. There wasn’t a thing we didn’t request to drink that wasn’t served with a smile and then every morning and evening a hand shake and conversation. Susy at Unico 2087 restaurant during dinner, well I could be here all day saying wonderful things about her. 3 times we had the pleasure of be served by her. After the first time she remembered every little thing to the detail about how we liked stuff from the way to needed food prepared to the side garlic butter. She even made it a point on our last dinner there to take the time out to say good bye to us. Definitely server of the year! Also Memo at pool dining was exceptional. Went out of his way to get me fresh fruit for my drink and took the time out every evening to have a conversation with us and find out how our day was. Such a sweet guy and hard worker. As for the room there is not and I mean not one complaint I can make. I have eaten at a lot of resorts and this tops it by far. Unico 2087 for Dinner was my favourite, cause I’m a big steak eater. Also Japanese and Italian restaurants where amazing. As for serve in all place there isn’t enough they can do to accommodate you, and I mean down to ever little detail.
We stayed in building 5 on the 4th floor. I would definitely request that build when I return. So clean and tidy. Everything was so well though out for comfort. There are so many things I could go on and on. But all this is exceptional stuff that stood out to me. I could go on all day saying wonderful things. This is a must stay resort. Will without a doubt return!!!
We’ve just returned from Unico and have to highly recommend this perfect resort. It checks all the boxes. It is aesthetically beautiful, clean, safe, very accommodating, with the right mixture of activity and leisure, and the right size. I can’t say enough about the service. There are many employees and everyone we encountered from our concierge to groundskeepers were friendly and exceptionally helpful. We loved the quiet pool where we spent a lot of time and our waitresses Karina and Bianca were so attentive and always had smiles on their faces. I can’t say enough about them! Also enjoyed the swim up bar there where Mario was very friendly and professional. There is not a drink he can’t make. The food is outstanding. Not a bad meal. Our favorite was the bone marrow appetizer at the Mexican restaurant and our waiter there was so entertaining as he made us the best table side guacamole we’ve ever had. So fresh! Another favorite was the rotisserie chicken in 20.87 best chicken we’ve ever had. Loved the FRESH sushi there too. Our waiter there a lot of the time was Ricardo, we loved him. He really made a point of remembering what you liked and offering it to you before you even asked. The Italian restaurant was delicious and we sat outside in a beautiful setting on a gorgeous evening with Luis attending to our every need. I could go on and on but if you want a vacation without a care in the world this is it. You are even assigned a concierge (ours was Edgar) who will find you and is always professional and helpful. We will return!
My husband and I just got back from our 8 day, 7 night honeymoon at Unico 2087. Everything was PERFECT! I am so happy we picked Unico, we had the most incredible time. The hotel is adults only, which really makes a difference (I love kids, just not so much when on vacation) and all inclusive. We had a beach front room, and the view took our breath away. The room itself was clean and big. The bed was super comfortable, and the bathroom was luxurious with a double sink and a huge shower with a rain shower head (and also a regular, removable shower bead, which was great). I already miss that shower!
The balcony had a lounge couch and a huge jacuzzi tub. At one point a staff member came to the room and filled the tub with warm water, bubbles, and pink rose petals for us. It was very romantic, and we got to watch and listen to the ocean while we enjoyed the tub.
The staff was so friendly and the service was amazing. As soon as you get settled by the pool or even on the beach a waiter would approach you and ask if you needed anything— food, drinks, a towel, etc). There are 3 pools, one is very quiet, and one is very much a party pool (dance music, volleyball, and animal-shaped floats, which is very fun). Two of the pools have a swim-up bar, and one of them had a hot tub.
We ate at all the restaurants except the Mexican one, just because we are picky eaters. The Italian restaurant, Mi Carisa, is the fanciest place I’ve ever been too or will ever go to again, most likely. The booth seats were straight up couches, and the atmosphere was so classy. The food was delicious too!
We also ate at Mura House, at a Hibachi table, which was very entertaining! The beef teriyaki was my favorite, and the fried ice cream was very tasty.
But our absolute favorite restaurant was the 2087 Restaurant. We probably had breakfast here every morning, and one day we had breakfast, lunch, and dinner here. Breakfast and lunch is buffet style, but nothing like I was used to! The waiters are still very attentive and friendly (they pull your chair out for you, put your napkin on your lap, and serve you drinks). The breakfast buffet was spectacular, definitely our favorite. Fresh fruits, delicious bread, and so much good food. I really enjoyed the french toast, and all the different variations of potatoes. Again, I’m a very picky eater, so this was a big deal for me. The lunch buffet was good too, and they had some great dessert options.
For dinner, my favorite dish was the flank steak and baked potato, and for dessert you have to try the ice cream truck! It’s a cute little trolley with vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and coconut ice cream, and various fruits and other toppings (strawberries, raspberry sauce, chocolate sauce, chocolate chips, etc). The trolley has little bells on it, and it’s adorable. And the presentation is excellent! For the main courses and the desserts.
I know Mi Carisa and 2087 have outside seating, which is picturesque. And at 2087, some outside seating has a view of the ocean.
But the absolute best thing about this hotel (which is saying something because it was all pretty spectacular) is the discount you get on the tours. They offer inclusive and signature tours at Unico. The inclusive tours, you only pay a 20% or 25% fee on the price of the tour, and that’s it. So for example, the couples dream swim with the dolphins is a $300-$400 tour... we paid 70-something dollars for it. With this discount we were able to do so many tours, and we had an AMAZING time, we swam with dolphins, saw ancient Mayan ruins, visited a Mayan village and got to learn about their culture, and got to see the jungle and the wildlife. Most of our tours were 25-35 dollars per person. An incredible deal for what we got out of it.
The spa also has a similar inclusive system. Some services, you only pay a percentage for. We did the couples massage, a $500 massage, for which we only paid $100.
The lounge near the lobby was also a fun place to be. They have a bar there, a pool table, some tables where you can play chess, and on certain nights they have live entertainment. My husband and I loved playing pool while we waited for the transportation to arrive to take us on our tours.
And it’s worth mentioning again just how friendly and attentive all of the employees were. We had no problems while we were there, and so many nice conversations.
All-in-all, like I said, it was a perfect honeymoon experience. I would absolutely recommend Unico to anywhere visiting Mexico! Hopefully, we’ll be able to come back one day.
First kudos to Costco Travel for the all inclusive package from arrival to departure.
We arrived at Unico 2087 and were greeted with a cool refreshing house drink. They had also gave a choice of room scents. i liked the Artisan Sun.The front desk staff were little off putting ,however ,did not let that get in the way of our first impression. Rodrigo was our host assigned to us for the week. He was very accommodating & gave us an itinerary everyday and had made our dinner reservations for us as well.
The room was the most calming room I have ever stayed in. We had a swim up pool off the bedroom which was very relaxing. The mattress and the pillows were like sleeping on air. We were greeted everyday with a rose on our bed after the turn down service
Housekeeping was there at your beckoning call.
We chose the quite pool area which was one of several infinity pools. The service here was impeccable.
Bianca, Karina, Alexandro (Ale), Miguel were most accommodating and worked very hard everyday with keeping everyone happy.
Libations were abound anything you wanted was yours. You could get very creative with a fancy drink or enjoy a cold one.
This is their Italian restaurant. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Raviolis seemed to be the hit here. Their take on Chicken Parm was very good according to on of the couples we travel with. As for me I had the Gnocchi it was ok. Their house wine was not good for me. The wine list had the better selection.
Their breakfast buffet and lunch buffet was amazing. Literally, from soup to nuts and more. If by chance you did not find what you were looking for they would make it for you.
In the evening this restaurant becomes a steakhouse. I am not crazy about steak, however everyone seemed to enjoy their dish. Dessert came in a ice cream cart on the table which was very cute. Again, house wine was the same maybe a better bottle this time and was ok.Please keep in mind there is a charge if you order a bottle of wine which is pricey and odd as this is an all inclusive.
This is their Japanese restaurant. OUTSTANDING! Their grilled EDAMAME was to die for. All the food here was really, really good and tastefully done. My fav!
They also offer Hibachi which we did not do because of my food allergies. I cannot comment on this.
This is their Mexican restaurant . If you are looking for TEX-MEX this is not the place. this is authentic Mexican food. After staring at the menu for 10 minutes, the waiter came to our rescue. He ordered for us and nailed it. Every dish was delish. The dessert we chose was coffee. Mayan coffee. This is a table side show of fire and liquor. Well done and also a delicious way to end a meal.
Live music some nights. They were not big on shows and such. If you are adventurous you could travel to some shows in the resort area.
Very little choice, should have more. Local fare. Sunglass Hut had some great prices. Fini Jewelry had a beautiful selection of jewels at fair prices. Souvenir shop was pricey.
This is the place where we called it a night. Sat had lattes and cookies and people watched. We met wonderful people and spent lots of time exchanging life stories and travel experiences. We all exchanged numbers and now have life-long friends. Thank you Unico 2087!
I heard it was amazing lots of choices for relaxation massages. I did not have the opportunity to have one but heard it was an amazing experience.
Unfortunately it was full of seaweed and the waters were rough. However, you could sit and have a cocktail while taking in the beautiful views of the Caribbean.
I would definitely visit this resort again in the near future. However, I hope for more entertainment.
Thank you Unico 2087 for a wonderful time with friends and now more friends made on this trip.
We just spent a beautiful week at this all inclusive resort. We had a lovely room with a swim up pool and the most comfortable bed and pillows ever! I will start with the negative and end with the good stuff!
Upon arrival we found the front desk staff to be a tad abrupt and not accommodating. We booked this trip almost a year ago and we traveled with another couple. The rooms we requested and were confirmed via email were given to others so we asked if we can visit another building and adjoining rooms so we could choose what suited us and we were denied.
We also found there was NO entertainment after dinner. They did have a live band once or twice for a short period but timing was not good. They usually performed while most people were dining. They should have had some entertainment after 9pm.
The positive was the staff! Housekeeping was terrific and most accommodating. The pool staff was outstanding. Especially Ale(Alexandro), Bianca, Karina, Manuel and Mario. Luis at the Mura House and our host Rodrigo. They made our stay outstanding! We don't recall the person who turned our room down nightly but she also was great.
The food was good especially 20 87 buffet for breakfast and lunch.
We would love to return and our wish would be for another choice for dinner, perhaps a buffet as an alternative, nightly entertainment such as music or a show. We heard there used to be a show but it was taken away??????
BTW the yoga instructor for floating yoga was excellent. I am sorry I do not recall her name.
