How to Get There
Excellent food, Polite and Excellent staff throughout and brilliant location. One of the best hotels I have stayed in BUT....
1) We tried twice to get served at the swim up bar, both times we gave our order and waited 10 minutes before deciding to leave. It seems that the staff were only serving customers who were throwing tips their way and were having their own mugs filled. I am not against staff being tipped (I do it myself when warranted) but to ignore other customers is not acceptable:
2) Prior to travelling I asked certain questions on Tripadvisor regarding possible room location etc. I was advised by the hotel I would be located in block 82. Therefore 2 weeks prior to travelling I requested, if possible a 3rd floor room with seaview. I am aware these are only requests and cannot always be honoured. On arrival I was advised I could not have block 82 (I didn't request this) nor could I have a sea view (fair enough) however I had to go through the embarrassment of signing a disclaimer at check in!! Why? I had only requested if possible. Furthermore the room we had in block 83, which is classed as Ocean front, was lovely but was further from the Ocean front than may others and our view was of another block. I struggle to see how block 83 is classed as Ocean front. It would also be interesting to see how these rooms are allocated... do some nationalities/travel companies get preferential treatment like in other hotels? I do not expect the hotel to admit this.
I would not bother paying the extra for Ocean front again, although the rooms are of a very good standard.
These 2 things put a spoiler on the holiday, which is a shame as the hotel is very good indeed
Stayed 5 nights in junior suite 5316, had a wonderful time, would love to come again. Great hotel in a complex of 4 hotels, which you can go between and eat and enjoy facilities of all. There are "trains" going non-stop between the hotels, inclued a dolphinarium with dail free shows, shopping center nd a small water park for kids, also goes all over the hotel itself. Beautiful pools and beach with lots of activity and also quiet corners which we enjoyed. Rooms are serviced twice a day, food is very good with a enourmous variety, very tasty. Besides the buffet, there are a few restaurants for which you need a reservation, make the reservations as soon as you arrive at the hotel. Well worth it. There are a few minuses - the toilet was blocked twice, we were told not to throw toilet paper in Mexico. That was not the case in another hotel we stayed 5 km from there and not right for a 5 star hotel. You had to wait more than 5 minutes for the hot water to reach your shower. Ventilation did not work in the bathroom. Excellent hotel, we would be happy to return one day!
Hotel were great on arrival, greeted and offered drinks and transferred to our rooms within 40 minutes from arriving. (7513 & 7514). Rooms were roughly a 15 minute walk from the main lobby, pool and beach so we were happy with location. View from room balcony was just trees but we didn’t use it anyway as mosquitoes are a problem here.
The hotel also met our request of interconnecting rooms and provided a lovely little treat for a birthday celebration.
Rooms had a damp smell to them throughout our stay and one fan in the room was close to falling so we didn’t use it. Also bathroom mirror was hanging off throughout our stay. Minibar was replaced daily and rooms sizes were decent for 2. I wouldn’t want 3 adults in one room. Be wanted the rooms get seriously hot even with air con on.
We never had to reserve any sun beds around the pool which is a nice change.
Gym is small and busy so you can’t always get in. The guy working in the gym did move people on after 30 minutes which helps.
Some restaurants are uncomfortably hot without air con, or if they do have air con it wasn’t on. However the al a carte meals were lovely and service was good. Slow in some but we weren’t in a hurry.
We did have someone try and enter our room on our last night around 1am which was seriously unnerving so was glad it was our last night.
Alfonso our Butler was great and couldn’t help anymore if he tried. He was 5star.
The entertainment at night is poor and the room uncomfortably hot. You are eaten alive also if you didn’t arrive early you couldn’t get a seat. Unfortunately some nights were spoilt by drunken parties jumping on stage or talking constantly over the shows, getting louder and louder. Mute button needed. 😜
I wouldn’t return to this hotel again which is a shame as my first visit 5 years ago was amazing.
My wife and I went to the Akumal in November 2018 and for us it was perfect.
Upon arrival we were told that we were upgraded to the Akumal villa next to the Brazilian restaurant.
I must say the room was fantastic and service exceptional with Butler and turn down service twice daily as well.
The grounds are impeccable almost picture card standard, credit to the establishment.
However we in particular are beach people and the beach at the adult area is man made and the sand was coarse. We stayed at the infinity pool which was ok. Waitress service at the pool was very good.
The only downside for being around the pool is that Americans seem to think they own the place? Often drinking to excess and in the pool for hours talking very loudly, they needed some one with authority to either throw them out or keep them under control.
We did walk along the beach to the Coba side and sand was much better although the water was not very deep.
The venue for our wedding on the beach was fantastic, better than I imagined and lucky that we had perfect weather on our wedding day.
The photos everything for our wedding day was perfect, everything we hoped for and the service from the wedding department was great nothing left unattended etc.
The restaurants: we went to the Italian I think 3 times and it was great.
We tried the Mexican which was again very good.
The Brazilian which we also had our wedding reception was great, the food very good.
We also had our breakfast every day in there and it was lovely.
The main restaurant was very good as well. A lot to choose from, something for everyone. We ate there several times as we had a lot of guests with us and we could all get seated together which was good.
All in all a perfect place to get married especially if you have guests as well as we had approximately 20 people attending as well to which to my knowledge all enjoyed everything about the wedding vacation.
Thank you to Claudia our wedding co ordinator and all the staff for making our stay unforgettable.

In 2017 I reviewed the Luxury Bahia Príncipe Akumal and titled it...Is this for real? Well my husband and I just returned from a 7 day stay at this resort and are still asking the same question!
Let's see... Our check-in was quick and easy. Greeted with a glass of cold sparkling wine and of course a smile!! Our room was very nice and comfortable with a lovely king size bed and all the amenities you could want or need. The grounds are nothing short of spectacular!! Absolutely immaculate with a beautiful mixture of sand, surf, forest and wildlife!
The food and drinks did not disappoint. The main buffet left nothing to be desired and the specialty restaurants especially the Brazilian, Italian and the Arlequin were fabulous! The drinks were whatever you desired and top shelf.
All of the above is great but what puts this resort over the top...again... Is the service! From the time you get up till the time you go to bed... You are always greeted and served with a smile. They can not do enough for you. As an added bonus, you have a consierge and a butler at your call to help you with any of your needs! Yes, service is everything!!
Thank-you to all the staff for all the kindness we were shown and a special thank-you to the breakfast crew at the Riviera. And a very special thank-you to Roberto who always made our dinners special!!
So... Is this wonderful place for real? Yep it is!!!
