How to Get There
We loved this hotel.
The food in general was brilliant. There was loads of choices and we especially loved eating in A La Carte restaurants every night, as otherwise you get bored of the buffet restaurant.
In general staff was very friendly and accommodating. We had a bad experience at reception at check in and twice in the buffet restaurant, but otherwise couldn’t fault them at all. Many went above and beyond.
The setting is amazing with all its wild animals.
My husband played golf and said the course was brilliant and well looked after.
Some of the evening entertainment was honestly amazing. One evening they had opera singers that were breathtaking.
Rooms were big and comfortable.
Mini fridge was restocked daily.
On arrival, we were dropped at the bottom of the hotel. We then had to carry in 3 suitcases, a sleeping baby, buggy and 3 items of hand luaggage ourselves. Something that I would never expect from a 5 Star hotel, that is fully aware of your arrival time. Especially after traveling for nearly 24hrs.
Not enough umbrellas by the pool, but there are always some available by the beach.
The service the second week in the a la carte restaurant wasn’t as good. They seemed totally understaffed.
The evening entertainment was repeated every week.
All in all an amazing holiday and we will be back.
We returned to this total taste of paradise for the 15th time in September for 2 fantastic weeks. This was the 1st time we have stayed in the adults only section in block 82 and were absolutely blown away by the standard of service we received especially from the worlds finest butler Cynthia from our room scents to restaurant reservations to anything else she could do. This lady made an expected wonderful holiday into the best holiday experience we have ever had and we only hope she is never headhunted by another hotel chain as this would be a disastrous loss to the hotel. Although we have had butler services for many years at this hotel we never really used them but Cynthia went above and beyond without being intrusive and we loved everything about her.
We found that on this visit the standard of entertainment was extremely poor in comparison to previous visits and when we spoke to the entertainment manager he explained that hotel management were concentrating on local acts who in both ours and the majority of other guests opinions were to say the least amateurish and at times unwatchable. Some guests simply moved on and in our case we put tissues in our ears as a form of humerous protest. Come on management you know you cannot afford to let standards slip less you run the chance of guests not returning. We also found guests complaining about the live band in the Hacienda and again spoke to the entertainment manager who experienced their really poor performance first hand and was cringing at the sound. We asked if it would be possible to have a DJ performing there say every other night as this would make a massive difference to be able to both sing and dance to a variety of music not just Spanish songs and guests always appreciate a good song and dance.
The food as always was excellent along with the a la carte restaurants especially the Gourmet where we had fabulous food with a fabulous atmosphere.
This resort is spotless down to the very hard working staff constantly sprucing the whole place up every single day and still finding time to smile and sometimes chat to the guests. We love you all !
The beach and pool bar staff are fantastic and the fruit sticks go down a treat when they bring them around. The quality of drinks is fantastic with premium brands readily available day and night what more could you want.
We have had some truly fantastic times at this hotel over the years but have to say that this one was the best thanks to Cynthia our butler.
We would most definitely recommend this hotel as we are yet to find another that comes anywhere near the standards offered here. This is truly paradise disguised as a holiday resort so if your looking for a fantastic holiday this is definitely the place just don’t hesitate you won’t regret it and you will return time and again believe me.
Outstanding staff - from the cleaners, pool, bars, restaurants, buffet, reception, beach cleaners and Trolley driver staff. All are friendly, work so hard and very helpful.
Cleanliness is excellent across the resort.
If they can help with anything to make your vacation better they will.
Favourite restaurants : Harlequin, Don Pablo, Le Gourmet, Tequila and Alux.
To the owners of the resort - YOU MUST PUT MANY MORE PARASOLS AROUND THE ADULT ONLY POOL.
It’s a vast resort. Standards at Tulum have slipped since my previous visit but Akumal has improved, albeit the rooms are a little tired now.
- 1 point
If I have one negative thing to say it’s about the Dolphins in what used to be swimming pool at Tulum end - these need to go to a more suitable animal friendly venue.
Will never support this.
Just returned for a 2 week trip to the Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal.
Flew in premium cabin with TUI airlines from Gatwick to Cancun, great on board service the only grip being the boarding process in Gatwick. The call was to board premium only but everyone seemed to queue to board and the agents didn’t react, but much more organised on the way back from Cancun.
The transfer from the airport to the hotel was around 1 hour 20 minutes and pretty non eventful.
Upon arriving at the hotel you could seen the grounds, building and standards were good. Check in was seamless and quick. As standard after check a quick trip with a bell boy/concierge to the villa/room on a golf buggy.
The room was clean and tidy, and pretty typical for the standard of hotels in the region. The maid service throughout was functional and the room was always spotless. The only disappointment was that our maid didn’t part take in leaving “towel animals” despite daily tipping, but this should detract for the review overall but was used to this form previous stays in the Caribbean.
The infinity “adults only” pool was footsteps away and clean tidy and a good amount of cabanas and sun beds. If you wanted a Cabana this would need a early trip down (07:00 latest) to reserve! The staff at the small bar were always friendly and efficient as well as the ladies that would serve around the pool.
The beach was ok, not the best in the area but this would be due to position and coral in places. The hotel had though gone to measures to create some nice areas that are sheltered from the waves. There a people out cleaning the beaches of shingle and seaweed every day. They also do great work in clearing the rubbish that we as a human race seem to think is acceptable to dump everywhere. The hotel do a great job in clearing this but it is a never ending task.
Plenty of fish in the sea to make snorkelling a fun past time l, but because artificial sea barriers are in place this is all that you will see.
The restaurants and food were generally good, plenty of choice at the buffet everyday and the restaurants also good quality. Booking was easy via the Bahia app, this app was also used to log onto the FREE WiFi throughout the hotel.
We had a couple of days of rough weather “tropical depression” the hotel staff made sure the hotel was safe before the winds hit and the entertainment team did their best to make sure everyone stayed entertained. The grounds staff were up and out early the day after to clear up. This tropical depression end up turning into the Hurricane that hit Florida a few days later.
Really enjoyed our trip to the Luxury Bahia, and would recommend this hotel if travelling to this area of Mexico.
It would be nice to see smoking restrictions now in place around the pools and maybe the hotel could look at this for the future.
The only bad point of the trip to point out ( this is not affiliated to the hotel but aimed at TUI)
Did a trip with TUI whilst there, Tulum and Snorkel. Tulum ruins was really interesting but the snorkel part was a shambles, the tour was sold on the basis that you would see the coral and have a chance to see turtles etc. 1st the sea was so rough I would question that we should have even have been out there as it was tough work! 2nd whilst with anything with nature there are no guarantees to see wildlife it was disappointing to be told that they had changed were they go to snorkel and there was a 30% chance of seeing a turtle (BTW there is another trip that goes to a Cenote and Snorkelling with Turtles, that either takes you again or refunds 50%) had we known about this 30% chance we would have booked the other trip (also half the price of this one). I would say there was actually 0% chance of seeing a turtle as we were taken to an area with no sea grass (which the turtle eat). The day also include a lunch a a beach club, very poor in my view! It also include a stop in Tulum town, well 30 mins to be truthful, enough time to walk to one shop and back.
The worst part of the trip was the transport, 14 people squeezed (literally) into a small mini bus!!!
I would defiantly not recommend this trip, especially considering the £240 cost, we were not the only ones felling this way.
We traveled in October 2018 to the Luxury Bahia Princip Akumal as member of the privilege club as family. The hotel is perfect. The Service was perfect. The consierges do all what they can to help us and give us a pleasent stay. The Buffet in the Tulum complex are more big and looking better. Also the service there is a little faster. But we were in vacation and had time. The beach, were ist the best part for the members of privilege club, is perfect. Only in the water you will find with your feets many stones (or death coralles). So it is better to bring shoes for the water. The service was from the first moment perfect. The drinks at the beach and in the lobby was served in perfect taste and style. We really feel like members of the familiy with the stuff. The food in the special restaurants (we were at mexican, brasilian and gourmet) were also served perfect. This was a holiday trip that we will not forget. A big thank you to all the staff at the hotel.
