How to Get There
Hotel buffet food is actually good. Staff are good and if you ask for something it usually turns up in your room. Pretty quick and they do check.
Rooms are dated though and air con average at best.
If rooms were better then a 4 or even 5 star rating would be given. This is day 2 of our stay.
I planned a surprise anniversary trip for my wife. Contacted the hotel a few times and they were surprisingly very prompt in their responses. We go on a lot of trips and like to say hi before we arrive. This and their other property Cayo Levantado in the DR were the only ones who responded. Being the the customer service industry I think everyone will agree this is amazing. I can’t wait to arrive and surprise the wife. If the pretrip communication is like their service at the property we will have no issues. Thanks Akumal
Currently staying at the Bahia Akumal resort.
Before coming here we had heard and read many trip advisor reviews regarding theft and robbery in Cancun/riviera maya hotels. Being aware of the situation we have been very carefully with our personal belongings, making sure they are always locked away. It is known in this hotel and many other hotels of items going missing from locked safes which is why we locked all our belongings in a suitcase.
Last night when we returned to our room we noticed that a suitcase where we had kept our passports and money had been moved. When we searched the case we discovered that £100 had been stolen. We immediately notified the management and within 15 minutes a manager and 2 security guards turned up to our room to “investigate “. They advised that as part of their procedure they needed to search all our bags. When we told them we were not happy for them to go through our bags the manager become aggressive and told us that they will not file a report. We were left with no option but to allow them to raid through our possessions. We felt that our privacy was being violated. As expected they did not find the missing money. We are now waiting for them to investigate this matter but I have no hope that they will get to the bottom of this problem.
It appears from previous reviews that this is a common occurrence and nothing is being done about it. We believe that all or most of the housekeeping, maintenance and management are involved, the management are aware that this is a problem within their hotel but help to cover up for the staff.
We have been told that if we had kept our money in the safe they would have returned it to us but having read other reviews people have had their safe boxes broken into and when the matter has been brought to the hotels attention they have been told that no one else has opened the safe.
We no longer feel safe in this hotel and needless to say we will never return to Mexico again. It is a real shame as we were really looking forward to this holiday.
My advice to anyone travelling here would be to leave all expensive belongings at home and to travel with cards rather than too much cash.
We are currently staying here at the Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal room 8012 and it’s absolutely amazing. The staff our butler Carlos have truly made this a memorable experience. The food the entertainment is second to none. But the best thing about this resort are the people who work here. As big as it is they truly take the time to help. We will be back.
it was a week full of fun and relax all this was because the staff like Deisi (waitress from the adult swimming pool), Alejandro (waiter from the main buffet restaurant) and Rafael (waiter-boss from the Mexican restaurant at the Premier lobby).
The resort is HUGE! however, we found it cozy as we got our spot since the begining wich was the adult swimiming pool just next to the bar :)
Amazing food in all the a la carte restaurants and the breakfast at the main buffet restaurant... excellent!
The only "bad thing" was a waiter from the snack bar at the adult area who was very rude with everyone who was seating on his area but we changed place and we avoided him the whole week.
