First stop Mexico

I selected Akumal as a first stop on a 4 week holiday through the Yucatán. The room was a 1 bedroom suite with spacious lounge and bedroom and a good sized bathroom although if you were claustrophobic you might have a problem as it is effectively in an underground basement with no natural light.
Reception and check in were very pleasantly handled and the two receptionists Jocelyn and Lisbeth (?) went out of their way to be of assistance on every occasion. Not many of the apartments were occupied as it was out of high season and good for me since had they been full all public amenities, pool, restaurant and beach loungers might have been stretched. It was an excellent stay and I will return but would have been a lot better with a balcony and a view!

Pretty perfect

Everything about our room was perfect -- really large, well equipped, super clean, spectacular, unbeatable view. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it seems most people here come with their own car, and we didn't -- and we discovered there is almost nowhere to eat without a solid 20-minute walk (or longer) or a taxi. The hotel's own restaurant doesn't serve dinner, and the 1 restaurant nearby that does, closes by 7 (and earlier if it rains). More dining choices nearby would make for a better experience. Also note that while the ocean here is clean and turquoise, the shore in front of this hotel is rather rocky (with corals), so you will need shoes. You can take out kayaks and borrow snorkelling gear though. A fair amount of seaweed is currently washing in. The pool is large, clean and there are always chairs available. There is a poolside bar with service as well (though it was often unmanned).

Perfect spot- everything we wanted

Great secluded location within a short walk from overcrowded Akumal Beach. We booked a Junior Suite at an awesome rate. By far the best price for a room with kitchenette in the area. We stopped at a Chedraui on the way to stock up on drinks and food. Our suite was basement level facing the beach-very easy access. Would definitely splurge on an ocean view for the balcony if the budget allows, as there is limited outdoor seating on the grounds apart from the beach/pool loungers. Jungle Fish next door has great food and drinks, and can deliver to your room for an extra charge. The beach directly in front of the hotel was rocky as others have stated. We snorkeled there several times in the mornings when the surf was calmest and found some decent areas. We found it comparable to snorkeling in parts of half moon bay. Akumal Bay snorkeling was simply the best though, and don’t be scared to try it out from the negativity surrounding the buoys, rules, tours, etc... Just walk over decently early in the morning and set out on your own in front of Secrets. Swim out and around the buoyed areas. We saw several turtles within 30 minutes in addition to coral, rays, and fish. Not crowded at all once in the water. We will be coming back here!

Good place to stay on the Mayan coast.

This is a hotel which is on the beach outside the town of Akumal. It is basically a group of apartments and rooms, which are owned by time sharers. When the owners are not there, the apartments and rooms are let out. We were a group of 7 people, so had an apartment of three double bedrooms, (plus a bedroom on a lower floor) which had a good open plan sitting room, dining room and kitchen as well. All comfortable and well looked after. You could have breakfast at the restaurant if you wanted or self cater. There is also a pool if you don’t want to swim in the sea. We were there for five days, and on three of those days, there was quite a strong wind, which meant that there was a lot of seaweed washed up and the hotel advised against swimming. We were all happy with our choice, which suited our needs very well. The rooms are excellently looked after by very good staff. Compared to many places on that coast this is an unpretentious and pleasant place to stay.
