How to Get There
Well you did it again ABBWR!!! The way my wife and I, and our friends are treated every year here, is second to none!! The biggest reason we keep coming back over and over again! I’d like to highlight 3 exceptional people that I’ve gotten to know and become very good friends with over the years! First , my musically talented amigo Abel, The Orchestra Man!! Every year I look forward to having you play me 2 songs on the beach every day for 12 days of the 14 Iam there! Along with the music I enjoy the conversations we have , you teaching me Spanish words and I teaching you English words.I look forward to it every day and I just want to say thanks for that and the friendship we’ve created! Thanks Abel and see you next year!😎🏝🐢
Next we have Abigael and Clemente, two hard working individuals that go out of there way to make sure we have a great time every year!! Getting to know these two has been a pleasure and an honour over the years, especially Abigael , who’s smile, personality and kindness seems to make everything brighter when she’s around! I appreciate our friendship 😎🏝❤️🐢
Clemente what can I say! Except “FrappaJerry!!” 😆 all kidding aside Clemente is always going above and beyond our expectations! The effort put forth every morning to make 10-12 “FrappaJerry’s” for our group drink everyday is a feat in itself! 🙂❤️. You make our vacations better with your smile and talks! I look forward to seeing you again next year!!! You always make me laugh. Thank you for being a friend. 😎🐢❤️🏝
Of course those are only 3 of the many people that make our holidays a special one! Marbella is a blast. Happy smiling joking all the time love it!!! I need that peanut mix recipe?!?! 😆 of course Jose at the snack bar! No more tequila!! 😂 and my 6:00am morning coffee man, Emmanuel!! You make my mornings a joy!!! Cheers my friend! And of course “the egg lady” 😆 Aurora ,you my friend ,are a person that all should try be like!! ❤️❤️❤️👍
Look forward to next time!!! Home away from home!! 🐢🐢🐢🐢❤️❤️❤️❤️🏝🏝🏝🏝
Akumal Beach is truly wonderful, white sandy beach and deep blue sea. Protected Turtle Bay area.(only in summer). The views are spectacular.
The sunbathing is great and always a lovely breeze.
The staff do a superb job clearing up on a daily basis the Sargassum accumulation on the beach.
The Lanai's are wonderful with a superb breeze and sea facing.
'Welcome to Bedroom Bingo".........
The Rooms are very basic and lack storage but are clean and decent size.
On arriving - the safe was not working, so we had to get unlocked as it froze. Tipped for this.
Then the air conditioning was not working, had to get someone to repair that, tipped for this.
Then the back door wasn't locking - for someone to repair that, tipped for this and this was all within the first hour of being in the room.
Getting the theme of tipping for everything here....
The TV for the evening /when it rains / when you cannot take any more of the live entertainment (that is coming up) is very basic, it could do with more updated channels for a 4.5 star rating.
Sometimes we got damp towels in the room. Sometimes we got towels and sometimes we didn't get enough.
The shower head was held up from slipping down the shower pole by a ring of black electrical tape. Effective, unsightly and I am sure Kelly Hoppen would have gasped in sheer horror as the design flaw. This is not a designer boutique hotel, but I do think that the tape can go!
Decent sized room with clean sheets &
Great towel art (when we got enough towels.)
We had one more episode with the safe not working again, but thankfully all sorted. Tipped again.
The Pool is a decent size filled with light salt water. It did not appear to be heated so prepare for a refreshing dip. They were not tears of joy! it takes a bit of getting used to. Don't dive as it is only a shallow pool! But the pool area and surrounding bars are great.
Pool towels - now, I have never come across hotels that have 'run out of towels for today'. Luckily I bought some with me then shared one. But seriously, I would think investing in a few more, may not go amiss. Even if you want a deposit on them, I am sure people wouldn't mind.
The choice of food - it has a reasonable choice, albeit repetitive, even for a week, it was becoming a bit like Groundhog Day. Variety but the same every day.
Sushi was superb, but a very limited choice of 6 types. Shout out to the lovely Liliana, she is amazing!
Now, as seafood lovers, we were rather excited after one of the staff told us that they were serving Lobster in the buffet restaurant that evening. So imagine, here we are picturing a nice juicy lobster, or tail, succulent meat in a coral style shell, yummy!!! You've got the picture..... We head to the restaurant that evening. As I look around, I didn't expect to have to conduct a treasure hunt, minus map, without the clues as to where to find it across the buffet. At last found the sign, Lobster written in tiny letters. Goodie!!!!
WTH! I peared down and all I spied was a miniscule dish. As I grab my glasses, thinking surely this can't be, I gawp like a goldfish as I spy Barbie portions, tiny pieces of lobster......swimming in its own red oil pool. Please Google lobster dishes. Mac and Cheese with Lobster contains more lobster than the whole red swimming pool of oil in the buffet.
The cocktails - great choice, however, after copious amounts and limited effects on some guests, you might need CSI's forensics Team to identify the % of alcohol in them. It may need more.
At the Brazilian meat restaurant, the caphirinia's were watered down either through ice melting and kept on the side or otherwise, but they were undrinkable.
Wilber you make the best cocktails!
The coffee is amazing and well recommended.
The staff, courteous, smart and friendly.
To their credit, reception and PR Corinna did their best to resolve some challenges around the stagnant smell in the room on arrival and offered us an upgrade, which I did advise was kind, but given we needed 2 separate beds the same size, (love you Mum bit don't need to share a bed with you at our ages). (which is why we didn't book that room initially as they couldn't fit 2 large beds in there.) We asked if they could please just sort the smell out and we would be happy to stay where we were. Which they clearly did.
Jesus, Patricia, Wilbur and Liliana. You are superb!!! Your service was worth it! Thank you
Some staff are not so subtle at letting us know that they expect tips, so be prepared to bring some money. All for it, if it's good service. $$ preferred to pesos.
But there were staff telling us on the Friday, Saturday is their last day and asking when we are leaving and asking us to make sure we saw them. One in particular saying 'oh we will do something special for you', then asking our room number and nothing special happened. Fully appreciate the tipping, but don't be so insincere about making false promises when we were celebrating a special event and not following through!
The Entertainment - Picture this, settling down for the evening under a huge area with a bar at one end, open sides, lots of tables and chairs and we waited with anticipation.
Building up to it, I am expecting something good given what we have experienced in other hotels.
After a week, yes that is all it took, I couldn't take anymore. The last night..... You can't beat them, join them in this clockwork orange parallel universe. Get decidedly happy on cocktails and then rope in other bemused guests and get going for one night to get through it. Shake those dramatic flaying arms, serious body moves and just dance like you don't care, as you won't have to do it again!
We were met with the same guy every evening, with his Yamaha style keyboard and a choice of dreary cheesy songs. Now nothing personal, he has a great voice and talent, but maybe a wider choice and a different suit jacket one evening might not go amiss.
The band's were all extremely loud and similar.
The saxophone player was superb!
Now, if you are into seriously cheesy and Hi-di-Hi style entertainment, (The Brits will get that) then you will love it.
For our group, it was like chewing cotton wool. Although, we kept ourselves amused by watchinh the sheer variety of dancing techniques on the dance floor. Serious busting moves out there! They were worthy of numerous awards.
The head of entertainment shimmied around the area, reminiscent of a nightclub owner. It would be great if when he asked the guests what music they liked, he actually took it on board and did something about it.
The 'Let's name the cartoon theme', just about made me want to bury my head in a plate of Tacos and guacamole and rub my eyes with chllis! Doubles all around to get through the entertainment. Help I need somebody! / the Macarena / The time warp - 😲😧 Truly help!
Really think that the evening entertainment needs a bit of an overhaul. Think acrobats/ local traditions/ your audience target market and demographic.
The Entertainment team doing water aerobics and coaxing people onto the dance floor are truly fabulous and a call out to them! The volleyball and the evening staff dancers you are awesome!! Alex and Ivanka - fabulous!!!!
Now, whatever that was, a howling animal to music by the pool, this is not entertainment, or relaxing whilst sunbathing and should be banned. The violin playing out of tune was enough to make you want to wake up from a bad nightmare. If out of tune and out of pitch and eye watering is the objective here, then you have cracked it! Not sure that's the aim you were hoping for.
All in all, a lovely area, friendly people, helpful staff, needs some improvements, I wouldn't put it at 4 or 5 star, more 3.9 star from our experience.
We just got home from our amazing 3rd visit to what we are convinced is the best resort in Mexico. I cannot say enough about how wonderful this Resort is. My husband has degenerative disease that affects the nerves in his legs which causes pain and balance issues. He uses two hiking sticks to walk. Less than a week prior to leaving for our holiday he fell and hurt himself further so we bought a wheelchair for him to use. We were both concerned about how we would manage. We needn’t have worried. The staff at Akumal Bay Beach went out of their way to help us in any way they could. Starting with Zahria at the front desk, changing our room from building 2 to 3 for easier accessibility, to Luis, Restaurant Manager, reserving an easily accessible table for us at the buffet for breakfast and lunch and Adriana always making sure we had our drinks, Lemuel always ready to offer my husband a hand and Carlos as well. Salvador, beach manager, offering us whatever we needed to help my husband be comfortable on the beach and Yesenia (Jesse) keeping us hydrated on the beach. Thank you to Fernando the life guard for helping us get my husband in and out of the ocean! Luis the porter, a friendly face from our previous visits, for helping us when we needed to go off the resort. The staff here are THE BEST and I truly felt that they genuinely cared about us, like family. It was sad saying goodbye so instead we said “see you soon” as we will most definitely be back again and again💗💗💗
We arrived at Akumal Bay for the second year in a row only to discover that we had no reservation. Our family loved our winter getaway trip so much last year that we decided to book again last July. We booked through an online travel site, got a great price on a couple of rooms, and showed up only to be told that our two reservations had been mysteriously canceled by our booking company... who we then discovered had kept our $ and gone out of business.
Raul (the manager) was super understanding, and even though the resort was pretty booked for the holiday weekend, he found two remaining rooms for us, upgrading us to penthouse suites, and was almost able to match our online rate (for a regular room price). That is some serious over the top customer service. We were so happy that he could make it work for us-- this is the only all-inclusive we've ever stayed and we will definitely keep coming back. Raul and Minerva, and all of the staff, are super professional, kind, and go above and beyond to ensure that you have the vacation you've been dreaming about all winter:)
Love the resort, the setting, and the lovely staff. Everyone is super friendly, warm, and fun... without being cheesy.
The grounds and rooms are minimal and beautiful, the beach and pools fabulous for the three generations we were traveling with. The food is great-- we have lots of allergies and dietary things going on in our family and everyone ate and drank well.
We're already planning next year's trip!
Love the room I have a bad knee so being on the bottom floor was great walk right out on to the beach I would go back again food was great lots of variety weather was awesome all around great holiday also the entertainment was the best managed a couple of dance's with my bad knee
