Trailblazing design hotel with a hotspot rooftop scene, Philippe Starck interiors and Ipanema Beach views
In a prized location on Avenida Vieria Souto overlooking Ipanema Beach, this trailblazing design hotel has been the upscale playground of Rio’s style set and taste making travelers since its 2007 debut. The Philippe Starck–designed interiors favor a mod, 1950s-inspired look in lashings of leather and wood, cool white marble and full walls of glass framing views of Rio’s enchanting skyline. All 89 guestrooms echo the public spaces, with dark wood floors, simple white walls adorned with black-and-white photographs, and organic accents like woven rugs and curved balconies. On the dining front, chef Paolo Lavezzini is at the helm of all-Italian eatery, Fasano al Mare, but for a taste of the real city scene, head up to the rooftop to join Rio’s bronzed and beautiful for daytime lazing beside the infinity pool or a strong caipirinha.
In the Area
For a dose of retail therapy, be sure to check out Rio’s swish boutiques along nearby Ipanema’s Garcia D’Ávila Street, especially Isabela Capeto, a hidden (geographically, anyway) fashion oasis offering original upscale designs uniquely rooted in Brazil’s rich textile traditions. Or treat yourself to some fine leather goods, exotic fruit smoothies at Bibi and a Kopenhagen truffle or three to ease any lingering travel stress. Just don’t spoil your appetite, Adega Pérola (R. Siqueira Campos, 138) awaits you with an authentic mix of over 100 Portuguese-inspired sea fare tapas since 1957. Or try family friendly traditional Brazilian dishes at Santa Satisfação. Cap off the day by heading over to Arpoador to join in the beloved carioca tradition of applauding the sun as it sets, rounded out with the best draft beer in the city at ocean-facing Astor.
