How to Get There
This is a very good hotel. It ticks all the boxes but one, and that one it so very nearly gets right that it is frustrating. We enjoyed our stay there and would not hesitate to recommend it, but with reservations.
In detail –
Location is excellent, tucked away from the road in Bergs Bazaar, an easy few minutes away from the old town, the river, the canal, the shopping district, the parks and the Art Nouveau quarter.
Reception was also excellent. Friendly, helpful without being over obsequious and fast.
Accommodation was very good indeed. The suite to which we found we had been upgraded was spacious, spotless, quiet, comfortable, well equipped and furnished and surprisingly quiet in spite of overlooking all the restaurants in the courtyard outside. We would have liked a walk-in shower, but the shower above the bath was perfectly acceptable.
TV was the usual nothing but foreign channels and BBC World, but there was a dvd player and a catalogue of dvds available on request at reception. Wifi was free and fast, and reliable.
The public rooms were well laid out and furnished. The bar was friendly and convenient. It is twelve years since the medics banned me from alcohol and I no longer even miss it, so all I had there was coffee, which was distinctly average.
I am not qualified to comment on the fitness room and spa. If every single one of them in the entire universe were destroyed overnight I would lose no sleep.
Breakfast was, in many ways, very good too, with scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon and mixed vegetables in the hot section, with others available to order. While the cold cuts section had only a small range of meat and cheese, it had lots of salads and more different fish than I remember seeing anywhere else. The breads and pastries were a little disappointing, however, not really up to five star standard. So was the fruit, where the only choice every morning was pineapple or melon.
Regular readers will know that I judge breakfasts by two things, however, the coffee and the cereals. This is where this hotel lets itself down.
On morning one I ordered coffee and when it arrived it was espresso. This, if not exactly what I had in mind, was understandable and perfectly acceptable if rather bland. So, forewarned, on morning two I ordered Americano and when it arrived it was espresso. On morning three I tried ordering cappuccino, and when it arrived it was espresso. I think I got the message by then.
The cereals were even more disappointing, to start with, at least.
Day one there was cornflakes but no muesli, only granola, which is not the same thing at all. Day two there was only cornflakes. When we asked about the granola we were told there was none and there would not be any until tomorrow.
To give them credit, in the absence of granola we asked for muesli and were promised it for the following day, and there it was next morning, made on the premises, so they told us, and very good indeed, and it lasted for the rest of our stay. All the same, we enjoyed our breakfasts in spite of these reservations.
Service throughout was impeccable. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the Bergs to anyone – particularly to someone who is less fussy about their breakfasts.
More character than any chain luxury hotel, great situation near the center of the city and perfect service to help us organize our short stay in Riga. The hotel is beautifully and uniquely decorated with a mix of contemporary architecture (inside), mixed with classic and ethnic (african) art. The concierge was absolutely the nicest and gave us terrific advice including a private guide to tour the city and an excellent restaurant with high end Latvian food for the evening. we barely had time for a relaxing sauna before dinner. Everything was GREAT!
Arriving to an small courtyard you will find a great building a mix of old nad new, the Bergs hotel.
It is a great expiriencies to stay there, beautiful design, amazing staff and delightful breakfast, everything is great on the hotel, you can't find anything to make a critique.
