Overview

Harborfront boutique hotel overlooking Narragansett Bay, with open-air restaurant and yacht parking

The Look

The sleek, LEED-certified hotel adds a contemporary zing to historic Newport’s breezy Narragansett Bay. The Cape Cod–style facade is classic New England, but inside the emphasis is on cool tones and a modern look, thanks to Philadelphia-based architects DAS. Natural light streams through floor-to-ceiling windows and bounces off the white marble and hardwood floors. Forty 1° North caters to yachters with an amenity-rich marina and dockside dining — but landlubbers are equally cared for in the restaurant and lounge areas.

Bed and Bath

Guestrooms and cottages are dressed in muted grays and whites, and many have gas fireplaces and large balconies that overlook the marina. Luxe extras include beds dressed with soft Frette linens, 40-inch LED TVs and wet bars that can be stocked with special provisions on request. Modern bathrooms have sparkling mosaic tiles, tubs or showers, lovely Malin + Goetz products and fluffy robes.

Beyond

The on-site restaurant takes full advantage of its waterfront real estate. Ease into the evening at the dockside Grill, which has deck seating and a menu that shows off what Newport does best: seafood. Come evening, enjoy cocktails in outdoor lounge areas and wine tastings on Wednesday evenings.

In the Area

The hotel’s downtown location, just off the main drag of Thames Street, means you’re walking distance to the famous Gilded Age mansions, including the Breakers and Chateau-sur-Mer, as well as the city’s myriad art galleries. Explore them all during Newport Gallery Night, every Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. from February through December. Newport also has an impressive jazz legacy, and hosts one of the country’s best-known jazz festivals every August. Groove to jazz and soul at Newport Blues Café or One Pelham East, which has a history that goes back more than 30 years. Finally, you don’t need to own a boat to hit the water. Head to Newport Harbor and go on a day sail with Sail Newport, the city’s public sailing center.

Annual Newport Christmas Trip
Reviewed 4 days ago

We are frequent Newport visitors and have stayed at a majority of the hotels in the area: Forty 1 North exceeded our expectations. Located right in the heart of all the action. We arrived with our little 20 month old before check in and they rushed to get our room ready. The rooms are elegantly decorated and they put in a few kids’ books for our little guy. The bathrooms are GORGEOUS. The customer service was the best part of this whole trip. The front desk was there for anything we needed or requested, and when traveling with a baby - that’s VERY appreciated. Everyone is extremely friendly and approachable. We didn’t know what to expect when coming with a toddler in tow, but they really made us feel welcome. Our little guy is very personable and the hotel staff made him feel VERY welcome, which means everything to us.

The food is DELICIOUS. We had breakfast and lunch at The Grill which is located on the first floor. The views and meal were everything right with a hotel.

We can’t wait to come back.

Great spot - I’m glad we tried it!

Very cool ambiance and excellent service. Food was outstanding. They serve their oysters with a slight twist - with shaved ice mignonette, which was amazing. I had the squid ink pasta and my husband had the parppadalle, both of which were delicious. The restaurant was also running a special where all bottles of wine were half off, which was a nice bonus! Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Newport for a special occasion.

Wonderful hotel where you will feel welcome!

This was our first visit to Newport and the staff at 41 North made it memorable. There is no detail too small for them to notice. When we had some trouble with the iPad in our room (a nice touch, by the way) Kayla went out and got us a print copy of the New York TImes. The room was very special, with a balcony on the harbor and a fireplace. The location on Thames Street makes it easy to walk to many excellent restaurants and it's a short drive to the mansions and the cliff walk. We look forward to returning to Newport, and definitely to 41 North.

Wonderful Meeting and Visit!

What a fantastic place. It is clear that the owners have thought of every detail. I brought a small group here for a two day meeting then stayed on two more nights for fun. The hotel has a posh, funky vibe. I enjoyed the in room fireplace and deep soaking tub—felt like a Vanderbilt! The staff is warm and welcoming. You get the feeling you could really ask them for anything, and they would take care of it for you. And the food! So, so good. It would be even better to be there in the summer and take advantage of the outdoor areas but Newport is great anytime. Can’t wait to return.

Great Dinner!

Visited restaurant with family and had a fantastic experience! Menu was interesting and food prepared well. Fast friendly service and cool atmosphere. We were there at night so we didn’t get to enjoy the views. Parking was easy and we’d definitely return.
