19th-century Italianate design meets reclaimed wood and local granite with a spa and a speakeasy

The Lowdown

Originally a Venetian-influenced mansion, the Stone House in the opulent coastal enclave of Little Compton, Rhode Island, is now a home-away-from-home with acres and acres of ambiance. The oak-and-stone, pub-bistro Tap Room sends diners back to Prohibition speakeasies and its menu (with locally caught scallops and dry-aged chops) bring their taste buds to modern day New England. The spa offers therapeutic, deep-tissue treatments and Thai yoga massages. Individually designed guestrooms feel airy and modern with muted color schemes, custom quilts by Denise Schmitt and iPod docking stations. Many have fireplaces, heated bathrooms floors and water views.

In the Area

Settled by colonists from Plymouth Rock and named for an equally charming town in the southern U.K., Little Compton owes much of its charm to its European sensibilities. Admire area landscapes through the eyes of local painter Kris Donovan at her flagship gallery with expert watercolors, pastels and oil paintings. Crowther’s Restaurant’s coastal pub bites are decidedly rustic, encouraging tavern afternoons over wild salmon in chipotle aioli. And when it’s time to get some old-world vineyard vibes, Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard has 50 acres, 30,000 cases and a farm-to-fork café with daily baked pastries and meant-for-two gourmet flatbreads.
