A stay in a luxe modern apartment at an expansive golf resort on the Costa Calida, with a welcome drink

The Lowdown

Escape to Spain’s Costa Calida with a stay in the generous property of Mar Menor Golf Resort, at The Residences. This thoughtfully designed village spans over 16 million square feet and comes bursting with amenities and activities – not to mention a Nicklaus Design 18-hole golf course, which occupies 128 acres and holds a challenging par 72.
Within this TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence-winner’s extensive facilities, you’ll find yoga, Pilates and tai chi, alongside a reviving spa area. Go home with a new skill from taking part in one of the many lessons on offer, including languages, dancing and painting, or brush up on an old one with a clinic session in golf, scuba diving or paddle tennis.
Outdoor fun abounds here too, so when you’re not on the golf course, there are plenty of options to choose from. Go horseback riding, cycle your way around to discover more of the Costa Calida or hit the water on a sailing, rafting, windsurfing or scuba diving adventure. To get a true taste of the region, head to a local winery to sample a range of home-grown delights – a great place to pick up a beautiful souvenir, as well.

Great resort

Most of the accommodation on this resort is privately owned. If you book with the resort itself then don't choose a ground floor apartment as it is overshadowed by the balcony above. the accommodation is good but this area is busy and can be noisy. Breakfast is not as offered to guests of the hotel but in a room set off for golfers. It is ok but you sit on large tables with others.

5 day golf break

4 of us stayed in the apartments for 4 nights and the rooms are very spacious and modern. Beds are comfy and we had a nice view from our balcony overlooking the pool, lake and golf course. Kitchen facilities good but hardly used them. Breakfast was good. Wide choice of stuff and decent coffee.

Very misleading!

Having just travelled to Mar Menor for with my Dad for a few days golf, here is my honest review of the Mar Menor Golf resort.

On arrival we were met by very pleasant staff. However at 1330hrs they told our room was not ready unfortunately and to wait at the bar. This was sorted within one hour. The residences are about a 5-10 minute walk from the main hotel. The room was basic but clean. The bed were ok but we needed to ask for more pillows because the ones we had were horrendous. Also no-one told us we had to turn the boiler on for hot water so had none for the first day.

As far as the package......it is hugely misleading. Having arrived excited after filtering through the brochure and seeing wonderful pools and heath suites, please beware, if you are staying at the residences you are literally entitled to nothing. I have never felt so undeserving in my life. Firstly, the main pool pictured in the brochure is 10 euros a day to use. You get the use of a tiny pool nowhere near as glamorous as the main. The indoor pool and the gym are 20 euros a day to use. But here the really poor bit. You’re not even entitled to your room being cleaned or a change of towel. Even that will cost you. Honestly, in 2018 I can’t believe we found somewhere that charges you for a clean towel, I mean come on!!!!!!! 5 days with no room clean or fresh towel. I have stayed in hostels more accommodating.

At breakfast you are also segregated from the hotel residents and eat in a separate room. The breakfast is ok. There is continental option or an English breakfast of sorts although it is always cold. The clubhouse bar serves some food and drinks for after you’re round however be prepare to pay nearly 10 euros for a ham and cheese sandwich.

The golf course itself is extremely busy and in ok condition but was the worst we played all week.

In a nutshell, staff were pleasant and room was clean on arrival, however you are made to feel like a second rate resident and everything here comes at a cost. Would I stay here again, definitely not. We stayed at a lovely hotel in Villamoura with the room cleaned daily and fresh towel for less so won’t be coming back here.

The accommodation was fairly basic but clean and functional. The golf course itself seemed quite tired, with slow and bumpy greens in places. Bunkers were lacking sufficient sand. Biggest issues were the lack of available buggies and with there being no ability to store your clubs at the course. if you were lucky enough to get a buggy, you were not allowed to transport your clubs from the accommodation blocks to the Course, apparently for insurance reasons. Overall would not rush to book again. Better resorts elsewhere in the region.

Excellent facilities, lovely golf course but the pool may not be included - check

Really nice place to come for a break. We stayed in the Residences and had a really nice 2 bedroom apartment. It is about a 5 minute walk from the main hotel and restaurants. The only thing you should check is whether the pool is included. The main pool is for hotel guests. If there are spaces free after that you can buy a ticket for €15 a day. There are also numerous pools between the apartments but you need wristbands to go in and there are no sunbeds as they are for the owners of the private apartments. If you’re going for some sunbathing then check before you go that you can use the pools or you may be in for a nasty shock. Golf wise we played the course on site and a couple in the local area which are owned by the same company. The other two were a 30 minute drive away. All three were excellent but I’d suggest a buggy, especially in 35 degree heat. There are a couple of restaurants within a 15 minute walk of the complex. You are also a 10 minute drive from the coast and some lovely little towns. The place is excellent, well laid out, clean, friendly, good value and perfect for golf. Overall it’s very good but it’s just got a couple of issues I’d check before you go - 1. Can you go in the pools. 2. There’s not a lot else about unless you get in the car.
