How to Get There
We absolutely loved our time at the Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh. This is the only place to stay in the region! The team were outstanding -- from Amit and Reda onwards. I have high standards but they were surpassed! This is really the most luxury hotel in the Red Sea region -- we saw a few others "5 star" hotels and they paled in comparison. The hospitality, decor and grounds were far and away superior at the Oberoi. It is luxurious and everything we wanted was catered for, but it had a 'home away from home' feel about it too. No one was overbearing and the superlative Oberoi culture was apparent.
We had a one-week holiday at the very end of November and taking a winter break here from chilly London was an awesome decision! It was about 30 degrees and sunny everyday. It was windy but that was ideal as it meant it was never boiling hot (I should have bought a shawl or two for the evenings though as the wind can be strong).
Our 2-year old son thoroughly enjoyed himself. We celebrated his birthday at the hotel and the team were so kind, bringing him two lovely cakes and a gift. The housekeeping staff would make awesome towel/flower sculptures everyday which we've never seen before. The housekeeping staff in general were outstanding -- great eye for detail and an exceptionally high level of cleanliness.
All the "rooms" are actually villa suites with a private outdoor dining / sunbathing terrace, plus lounge area. The location of our suite right on the beach was fantastic. The beach is pretty and you can walk on the sand, but throughout the region it is a little gritty with tiny coral bits, so don't expect powder sand anywhere.
We spent most of the mornings by the wonderful infinity pool, but the sea is also lovely and clear. We went snorkeling one day while our son was looked after by the terrific babysitter. We saw interesting sea life and coral, which was great for beginner's snorkeling, right from the hotel pier.
We only went to the children's centre one day but the play area could have kept our little one happy for ages. The library had a good selection of books and a refined ambiance. I found the best holiday book here which kept me entertained throughout the trip while my husband taught our son to swim :) Sadly I didn't get to sample the spa which looked like a haven.
My son and I usually get eaten to bits by mosquitos (eg vacationing with family in Italy always results in welts), but this was no problem at the Oberoi. I don't know if the region doesn't have many mosquitos or the hotel's evening mistings across the grounds protected us. Probably a bit of both.
The Assistant Front Office Manager, Reda was incredibly helpful in planning our excursions and making sure our stay was as perfect as possible. He supplied us with his newly created film menu -- we got to watch a few terrific films -- and the hotel supplied popcorn for our nightly screenings. Reda suggested a submarine tour which was excellent -- we highly recommend it! The camel ride on the beach was a novelty for our son and gave us some fun photos, but if it weren't for him, I'd give it a miss. If I wasn't pregnant, I would have loved to go horseriding on the beach, which was also on offer.
The food was wonderful -- breakfast was delicious and varied; we loved dining in our suite and by the pool. The main restaurant had a good selection of continental, Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine. A few dishes were really delicious (we like good food, but I should say we are not connoisseur foodies!) Amazingly, we didn't have even an inkling of stomach issues throughout the stay, even though I have a weak stomach. It's a testament to the hotel's cleanliness as I know tourists at other hotels frequently get ill.
The hotel's security was also brilliant and we felt completely safe. With just a 5-6 hour flight from London, this is a wonderful winter break with family, which I highly recommend. We will be back for sure!
If you're reading this because you have booked a stay here, don't worry, there are positives to this hotel. The pools and beach are really nice, quiet and very clean, it's good for water sports, but we had a number of issues during our stay.
We've been lucky enough to stay in 5+star accommodation on many other occasions but this just did not live up to it's rating, no matter how many times the staff reminded us of that fact. Our first room had a strong damp, musty, unclean smell, and we felt the staff were unfriendly, rude and on the verge of being argumentative when we raised our grievances - even with just a query we were made to feel as if we were complaining, when we were not - definitely not the way to be treated at a 5 star hotel. A few members of staff were nice, but overall, the customer service just did not feel sincere or genuine.
We were moved to another room, in which the a/c broke, but it took 4 days of telling them about it for them to finally do something - again, we were made to feel in the wrong with the staff trying to fob us off. Eventually, they did help, which was welcomed, but it just took such an effort on our part to get to the stage where the staff did what, to be honest, is the minimum for a 5 star hotel.
The menu didn't change whilst we were there and yes, as other guests have mentioned it is expensive, but the biggest thing was if you are a vegetarian or have any dietary requirements, the hotel didn't tell us this can be catered for - we didn't find out until the last day.
All in all, this hotel just did not live up to the many other 5 stars we have stayed in. Maybe the absolute top end villas are nice, but the rest of this hotel needs to modernized and rooms updated, as it seemed tired and jaded. You won't have a terrible time here, but there must be better quality places to stay in Sahl Hasheesh.
I visited this hotel as a solo traveler as a last minute decision, escaping the stresses of a renovation project at home , my room was wonderful, the pool was excellent, but I chose to spend my days on the private beach , the staff went over and beyond to make my days comfortable and enjoyable without being intrusive this was something I valued .
I used the in room dining service , again this was a joy , the food was excellent and the service fantastic.
I look forward to returning to this hotel in the future as it was just what I needed , and of course as always loads and loads of sun
Recently returned from two glorious weeks of rest and relaxation at the Oberoi. It truly is a delightful oasis of calm amongst the chaos of Hurghada life – arriving into the extensive and beautifully kept grounds is like entering a different world. The room-suites are clean, well equipped and comfortable with plenty of mod cons such as big screen TVs and DVD players, English language channels for both sports and movies, and the obligatory kettle and mini-bar. The pool is big but quite shallow and divided into several sections so not a place to swim lengths – best to enjoy the abundance of loungers and poolside snack bar. The hotel’s private beach is long and sandy with plenty of shaded loungers; we never had a problem getting them even when arriving at midday. Swimming off the beach is limited to two small sandy areas – carefully marked – as the coral reef runs along the edge of the water but this makes snorkelling a pleasure off the hotel’s jetty that juts out beyond the reef.
What really makes the Oberoi as a hotel to enjoy and return to is the staff. Everyone is polite, friendly, welcoming but at the same time not in your face with constant attention. The hotel has a no tipping policy (but allows guests to make a contribution to be shared between all staff on check out) and this means the staff are not attentive for reward, but because they want their guests to enjoy their stay. As more than one staff member told me, they like to treat their guests as part of the Oberoi family during their stay and this approach makes a holiday even better.
Particularly I would mention the service and kindness shown by Mahmoud and Ashraf on the beach who prepared our loungers every day and were always ready to deliver fresh water when the sun got too hot, Ouf in the restaurant and his breakfast chefs (Mahmoud and Ahmed) who provide fresh pancakes and omelettes every day to order, Reda on the front desk for whom no request was a problem (e.g. arranging live F1 racing on my suite TV), Ashraf the patient tennis coach, Abdul Rahim and his colleagues in housekeeping - especially for their speed and timing in servicing our room and the amazing towel sculptures, and last but certainly not least Suman the pastry chef. New to the hotel (but not the Oberoi group) Suman was always on hand at every meal to ensure our particular culinary tastes were seen to and he kindly used us as tasters for the new range of desserts he is creating to add to the already excellent menu. We tried a Spanish sponge cake, baked cheesecake and the highlight a flourless Valhrona chocolate cake that was fabulous, hopefully it will still be on the menu next year as we will definitely be returning to the Oberoi in Hurghada – I strongly recommend it.

The Oberoi, Sahl Hasheesh lives up to the reputation of an Oberoi Hotel, it is an hidden gem of a hotel along the Rea Sea. This Luxury resort isn't quite as popular as it should be, having its own private beach and spread across 40+ acres on the clear waters of the Red Sea is perfect for diving enthusiasts to snorkeling novices.
The Hotel is located about 25mins drive from the Hurghada Airport which is an Hour flight from Cairo.
The hotel Is all suites, the rooms are very spacious and the bathroom is beautiful.
We were kindly upgraded to a Pool Suite and had our own private pool along the patio.
The Hotel lived up to the 5-Star service standards one expects from the Oberoi, Not one request was denied and we were accommodated at every aspect. All the staff is super friendly and tried their level best to make our stay as enjoyable as possible,
A Special mention to the GM Mr Amit Lakhanpal who greeted us at our time of check in and showed us around the property, He was extremely welcoming and set the tone for the rest of our 3 night stay.
The hotel its self is perfectly self sufficient and we found no need or want to step out of the hotel. From Food to Activities the hotel was fully equipped.
Highly recommend this hotel for couple or families and looking forward to my next visit.
