How to Get There
A wonderful place both hip and very relaxing/peace and solitude in a rain forest type atmosphere/We will be back! I especially liked the proximity to the ocean with diverse restaurants at water side. I enjoyed laying out and looking at the ocean. When you get to hot, climb down a ladder and take a dip right in the ocean. Amazing!
I stayed here for 7 nights for a team retreat and it was an amazing experience. When I emailed the place to inquire, Alejandra responded promptly and gave us a quote. From check-in to check-out, my experience was hassle-free. The guys at reception (Raul and Victor) are very friendly and accommodating. The bartender (Juan) is also very nice and there is a waiter in the Mexican restaurant who is very funny and accommodating (I forgot his name). Alejandra also organized an activities for us and one afternoon, she organized a kayaking activity for the group. The tour guides (Renata, Joshua and Diego) are awesome and they made our group feel safe the entire time, even those who can't swim. The rooms are very clean and spacious. Everything about this place is just wonderful and I'm definitely coming back.
The Explorean Cozumel is the perfect gift place for active tourists. You can choose to relax all day too (specially since you will never find the areas crowded) but if you like daily activities this is it.
Samuel González is the best Activities Manager the resort has had (I’ve been coming for almost 10 years) and he and his team made our two weeks vacation outstanding. I was particularly surprised by the tour guide Renata Navarro who displayed a beautiful combination of knowledge and agility while she either explained the Mayan culture or immerse herself all the way to the bottom of the ocean to pick up a plastic bag stuck on the coral reef.
The customer service experience is out of this world: come and feel like home while EVERYONE takes care of your needs even before asking.
At breakfast, captain Luis, Yareni and Jesus would deliver every dish with a smile while our chef Daniel would come to our table to check if the food was ok.
For lunch at “La Cevicheria”, José Pech and Victor León would take care of any little need you have.
At night, any specialty restaurant would be awesome, but at Explorean there will be 3 individuals that will make your night magic: José Roberto Manzanilla, José Juan Pereira and Fermin Ek Poot are the best.
And when it comes to being the best hostess, look for Flor Yam and Brenda Rojas at the concierge and you’ll see the most beautiful smiles ever.
I know it sounds like I exaggerate, but this is the kind of experience I’m looking to have at least once a year.
This place changed my mind about all inclusives. The food here was pretty good with some exceptions, and it was really relaxing to not worry about prices or paying during our stay. ALL the staff are so friendly and helpful. The excursions are fantastic, especially kayaking with Renata.
Only down side is while rooms are very clean there is a mildew smell because it’s so humid. Maybe air purifiers would help?
We just returned yesterday from 5 nights at the Explorean so I hope to provide a good overview as the website to the resort is not really the most helpful and informative.
The trip from the Cozumel airport to the resort was no more than a 20 min taxi ride (cost around $17 - no shuttle service provided by the hotel) so easy and cheap.
The Explorean entrance is very nice and lush (like you are walking into a jungle - very peaceful). Greeted immediately with the reception employees who were very nice and helpful. After we received our keys, we were asked immediately about when we could meet with the Sales associated for an hour and a half about becoming a member of the resort....we told her we would let her know later (it was clear from her expression that she didn’t like that response). For the rest of the time we were there, she did not speak to us and had a different demeanor than she had when we first arrived. This was not a positive experience for us.
The food had some good points - the ceviche and fish tacos by the beach were really nice and breakfast omelets and breakfast quesadillas were great too. Other than that, I would say food was over all very average...definitely expected higher quality and more menu changes but to be fair, there is always food available and you will not go hungry.
The drinks were ok as well - for the included wine and beer, nothing to write home about but again, always plentiful and you will not go thirsty. As for the mixed drinks, all of us had to ask for an additional shot with each drink we asked for as they seemed weak to us from an alcohol content standpoint. I wouldn’t say the mixed drinks were amazing but again, very average but absolutely drinkable.
The coffee brought to your door each morning was nice - they did forget ours one morning but other than that, really nice touch and good coffee too.
The rooms were very nice and clean and modern. Two thumbs up!
The pool at the Explorean was very tranquil and nice - great setting for relaxation! If you want bigger and louder pool, Fiesta next door was where you want to go for that but beware of the 80s and 90s music blaring all the time. Lots of Guns N Roses, AeroSmith, etc....I heard little to no “beachy” music like Zac Brown, Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney etc.....everything super old and didn’t really fit the setting.....it was our running joke each day.
Massages at the spa were FABULOUS! Really nice job that all the massage therapists did. The spa itself was not the best (very small and no quiet room or separate changing room) but still would recommend highly bc of the massage quality.
Diving from the onsite Dive House was great!
Excursions that are included with the Explorean - these were all nice and enjoyed the yoga, kayaking and paddle boarding. Couple of things that we (along with a lot of the other guests) were confused about is that the excursions offered to each guest were different and you couldn’t choose them for yourself - they were pre-selected for you and never knew what other options you might like better. It was a head scratcher to us but maybe there’s some method to the madness but we could never figure it out. For example, we were assigned Yoga at 9:00 am on the first day but two other couples that were there at the same time, didn’t get that option. One of those couples got a horse back riding excursion which we were never offered.....it would have been nice to have been able to choose from the list when you got there or maybe beforehand for planning purposes.
Also, for Explorean members, you can only use the paddle boards and kayaks only during planned excursion outings....you couldn’t use them on your own time which would have been nice.
Last thing on excursions, we went on a sunset kayak outing with a surprise at the end (which ended up being a nice dinner at an offsite location) but we all thought it would have been nice to know that dinner was planned bc we already had dinner plans that had to be cancelled. So just make sure you ask specifics on timing and agenda and ask what the “surprise” is!
Last critique - when we happened to be there, it was during the local election (which takes place every 3 years) and they close all bars that only serve alcohol. In order to drink, you had to have a meal/order food. This lasted for two full days of the 5 that we were there (Sat and Sun). It would have nice for the hotel to let us know about this when we checked in (since it started the very next day) vs us having to read about it on signs posted at each bar. This was the biggest thing of all that we felt was handled and not communicated in the best way. The staff were very apologetic and nice about it but guests were NOT happy, especially at an all-inclusive and to be surprised with it out of the blue.
No reservations are needed at the restaurants and there is no formal dress code either - FYI. This was something I wondered about prior to arriving.
Hope this helped!
