Love the hotel

The hotel food / restaurant was wonderful, especially seafood was really tasty. We only had one meal outside, which made my husband sick, so we had all meals in this hotel, and we did not get tired with the food. The hotel room's just ok, but overall this hotel was great. We will definitely come back next time.

WiFi - but not free!
Reviewed 1 day ago

TripAdvisor indicates Free WiFi is available in the public areas - which it is not. Only Owners at El Cid Cozumel receive free wifi. All others pay $10/D / $50/Wk for one device, and $12D / $70/Wk for 2 devices and there is no swapping devices! This is not one device at a time! Once connected, the user is locked to using that device. And our 2 Br unit was in the low rise 3-story wing and we did have a WiFi access point in the room so there was no problem with the connection - but it was slow at only about 1.5 - 1.75 Mb. Other than this issue, El Cid is always a great place to stay in Cozumel - we've been going there for 20 yrs and always enjoy it.

Staff are wonderful!!!

We just stayed for 10 days at El Cid Ceiba beach in Cozumel. Our stay was fantastic. We had the best room on the property in my opinion. Ground floor, corner, 7 steps the the sand. Our room was nice and clean and the little kitchenette was very handy. We enjoyed fresh fruit the incredible MX pasteries, juice and coffee every morning while everyone started their day. We were able to purchase that at the Mega super market for next to nothing. The kitchenette comes with a small refrigerator, toaster, blender, microwave and two small burners. We mostly only used the refrigerator.

To start the trip Ariel the Bellman was wonderful. He got us water upon arrival, and from then on took wonderful care of us. He supplied us with ice whenever we asked. He was always there with the biggest smile and to answer any questions we had. He even let us borrow a cooler when we went on a road trip. Ariel is top notch. He is one of the main reasons we will come back for a visit.

Mili the entertainment director was wonderful too. She always had a smile and I could hear her laughing from 10 beach chairs away. She kept us very entertained. During a few of the rain storms I helped her tune up her backgammon skills. She came and played cards and dominos with our family too. She also took my grand daughter to make friendship braceletes on a one on one basis when it was not scheduled and she had down time. She is awsome. She is the other reason we will be back for a visit.

The beaches in Cozumel are not big, but the beach here was sufficient for the property. Getting a chair was never a problem. We enjoyed the snorkeling alot too. We saw lots of beautiful fish and even a few rays. We enjoyed that the music was not crazy loud like it can be on some properties. It was at a nice level. The beach service was very attentive. The pool was always kept very nice and clean, and out grandchildren loved swimming in it everyday.

The GM was very nice too. He is always around and availalbe to talk too. I was impressed to see him bussing tables and helping out when needed. I have not seen that before by any GM at a property in MX.

My negative comments are for the restaurant. I found the food to be not very good, and expensive for Mexico standards. The happy hour drinks were ok, but at full price they were not. I only ate two meals in ten days and then gave up. There were to many other good options near by. I also was taken a back with the extra charge for wi-fi and daily coffee. I felt nickeled and dimed. Ultimately it did not matter. I bought coffee at Mega and it was wonderful coffee. So good I bought some to take home. I did not need wi-fi as my service worked just fine on the beach.

Overall we loved El Cid and look forward to a return visit.

A hotel that has seen it's day

We stayed at the property April 21-30. The property is dated, during our stay they decided to do renovations on the wing we were in, jackhammers all day, no hot water for 2 days, electricity off for a day. I have never stayed at a place that does renovations when there are gusts in the wing. On the days they weren't working the cruise ships were in and they sell day passes to them so the resort was chaotic and over occupied. When the ships are in they dock directly in front of the resort so the ocean view is blocked unless you are on floor 10 of the tower. The restaurant is marginal at best. Spend the extra money and go to a better resort, this one is not worth the time! We voiced our complaints and the staff and management did not care, we were not credited anything or even given the option to move to a different area, while we were there our travel mates had some of their belongings taken, stay clear.

El CID exceeded our expectations.

I was a little nervous about staying at El CID after reading some of the other reviews. There were a lot of negative comments about the cruise ships. It was not an issue at all. We enjoyed watching them dock and leave at night. They do buy day passes to use the pool and beach. We never found that to be a problem. There were a lot of tables and lounges, the staff brought more out early in the week. We were pleasantly surprised immediately when checking in. We were upgraded at no charge to a one bedroom unit in the tower on the 9th. floor. The rooms were decorated beautifully. The food at the restaurant La Chopa is very good. The staff is helpful and friendly.. I would highly recommend El CID. Will definitely go back again.
