- Room Service
Take nine all-inclusive restaurants (Agave for Mexican, Basmati for Indian, and The Lobster House for seafood, to name a third of the options.) Add 11 bars (including swim-up, pool, and disco). Throw in seven pools (four heated, five with whirlpools) and a full service Miilé spa. Multiply by 450 rooms and suites (some with rooftop terraces, balconies, and jacuzzis). The end result is an entire peninsula turned adult playground with the beautifully-designed resort at its heart.
In the Area
On the same peninsula as the resort—within walking distance—is the Playa Mujeres Golf Club, one of the top courses in Mexico. Nature-lovers will want to venture fifteen miles north of the property to Isla Contoy, a protected island that is a nature preserve, bird sanctuary, and nesting ground for endangered sea turtles. Guests can explore the Great Mayan Reef (also known as the Mesoamerican barrier reef) or hop the ferry to the floating fishing village of Isla Mujeres. But the most impressive excursion of all may be two hours south to the massive complex of Maya ruins at Chichén Itzá.
How to Get There
From the moment we arrived we were bowled over by the surroundings, the Staff and the total luxury. Cool towels and a glass of champagne greeted us as we arrived in the stunning atrium reception area. Super professional staff checked us in and whisked our bags to our beautiful room. The extra touches of fruit, champagne and chocolate treats for our anniversary were the icing on the cake. We had an absolutely amazing week celebrating our silver wedding anniversary and couldn’t fault a thing, we will definitely be back! All the staff were wonderful but special mentions go to Daniel in Magna who made breakfast a real treat, Viviana (what a smile!) at the club beach area who kept us plied with cold drinks and Manuel at the club beach area for whom nothing was too much trouble and kept our sunglasses sparkling and smear free! The name Excellence is truly deserved ????
After feeling a bit burned out from work, we decided to make a last minute romatic getaway. The Excellence Playa Mujeres was simply amazing and was just what the doctor ordered. We spent the first few days relaxing pool and beachside and the next few days with activities planned on an offsite.
5 Star Excellence Club Review...
I have written a very detailed review below but the overall description for this resort is ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!
Upon arrival, we were welcomed by Diego with a very warm greeting. Diego was exceptional in showing us to the Club Lounge for check-in and accomodating our bags so we can change into our beach gear to get our day going. To our surprise, our room was ready right when we finished changing as the hotel knew our arrival time and accomodated early check-in - important attention to details like this is what sets this hotel apart from the rest. Fernanda at check-in was also splendid. Diego accompanied us to our room and explained everything about the amenities, restaurants, pools and spa to us in detail. When we arrived to our room, the door had a Happy Anniversary banner. Diego gave us a complete run through of our room explaining every detail. 5 Star Excellent Service!
Our room was spectacular... beautiful views overlooking the pools, restaurants, tiki huts and beach. The room had a private plunge pool on second floor with two huge lounge beds, private balcony with small table that was perfect for breakfast on the balcony, jacuzzi that opened up to balcony and the room, huge shower and bathroom, soft sheets and fluffy pillows (you can request different types of pillow depending on the level of firmness you like), and a large seating area. Words cannot describe how perfect the room was. We had great breakfasts in our room set up out on the balcony - compliments to room service who bring the food with flames in the heating cart to make sure it arrives nice and hot. Also, daily room turnover service was exceptional. Little details like fresh cold water bottles on the nightstand, small deserts, fresh fruit mid-day and making sure the room was impeccable all day made our experience in our room perfect.
As for the restaurants, they have covered it ALL!!! Spanish, Mediterranean, Mexican, French, Italian, Steak House and Seafood spot. Angel at Magna was exceptional - as soon as he found out it was our anniversary, he set up a corner table with roses and a bottle of wine. It was perfect! Also, its the simple little details (like anticipating that my drink is low and bringing a fresh one without even having to ask and offering to add scallops to our entree b/c we wanted the surf and turf, but didn’t want to leave the scallops behind) that made our dinner experience exquisite. Anibal at Flavor Market was also superb - he gave us very detailed information regarding the tapas, including how the ham is cured and process used to make the aged cheese. He offered to bring us a sampling of many items, which were all delicious. The restaurants by the pool (Lobster house and The Grill) were great for quick bites during the day and for breakfast, but we didn’t make it to have dinner at those. Chez Isabelle was also nice, but the other two restaurants were more to our liking. Toscana’s lunch buffet had a ton of delicious options - also a must do. We couldn’t make it to all of the restaurants - perfect reason to come back soon! Also, Aroma (sorbet and coffee spot) is heaven!
At the beach, it is PARADISE! We had constant service for drinks by Hugo Cesar and Emiliano, water bottles without asking, and routine follow ups to make sure everything was good. Errick at the beach concierge was extra nice and attentive... taking the extra time to ask specifics about our stay, family and dining we have done and provided recommendations and coordinated a special experience at the restaurant we ate one of the evenings. He even did a nice saying with sand on a towel “Vuelvan Prontos.” Just truly a nice guy who enjoys providing excellent service. The beach has a ton of lounge chairs under tiki huts, bed lounges and canopy bed lounges that are perfect to just lay out and soak in the beautiful weather and listen to the waves come ashore.
For entertainment, there is tons to do including theme nights, performances and a ton of bars. Also, the Beach parties are great... they go above and beyond to set up experiences, dancing, shows and food with drinks apart from all of the other dining options. The silent party was also interesting, different and fun! The guys (Tonatiuh and Jason) at the Prelude bar are AMAZING - they truly take pride in their drinks and in providing exceptional and professional service.
We visited the spa twice during our stay. Once, to take advantage of our complimentary hydrotherapy session with Luz that was included with our Excellence Club rate. Luz and Atzi were very professional! On our second visit, we had an 80 minute couples massage that was rejuvenating and relaxing with Ana and Encirda. We also had an equally perfect second round of the hydrotherapy session with Atzi, which was included as part of your massage.
During our stay, we took a water taxi right off the beach to Isla de Mujeres. It was a quick 15 min ride over and the guys helped us renting golf carts at the island. Company wears navy blue shirts and walks the beach during the day. $50 pp or $65 pp if you do snorkeling. We explored the island for a couple of hours and then made our way to the crystal blue and white sand beach at Playa Norte.
We took another day trip to visit a Cenote (7Bocas - there are many others but this one opened a bit later) and then went to Playa Del Carmen to walk, shop and have dinner and drinks. Ate at Catch, which is a rooftop restaurant at the Thompson hotel. Chris was our waiter and he made sure we had a wonderful experience. Also, our taxi driver from the hotel (Ricardo Navarro) was a blessing - super nice and taught us about everything in the area on our car rides. He stayed with us the entire day and was accomodating to all of our requests.
Overall, this was a perfect way to spend our 10 year anniversary and plan to return very soon!
