Around 30 minutes north of Cancún’s airport and party-loving Hotel Zone, The Beloved Hotel Playa Mujeres by Excellence Group occupies a sandy patch along quiet Playa Mujeres. It opened as La Amada in 2009, and the rebranding to the Beloved Hotel detached the 109-room property from the neighboring marina, but added an impressive all-inclusive setup. All-white balcony-lined buildings surround the two main pools and landscaped gardens, while meandering trails lead to the two-story Casita blocks and a narrow but crowd-free white sand beach.
Bed and Bath
Spread across three main buildings and clusters of freestanding townhouses, guestrooms share a modern, romantic look in marble white and dashes of lilac. Enormous beds, separate sitting areas and outdoor daybeds encourage lazing, as does a well-stocked, all-inclusive bar. Zippy WiFi, iHome docks and 42-inch flat-screen TVs supply the modern comforts, and there are Nespresso machines for the morning caffeine fix. Part open-plan bathrooms have double vanities, gigantic showers with multiple jets and lovely Bulgari amenities; separate Jacuzzis take center stage in the bedrooms.
Dispelling any fears about all-inclusive dining, the food at Beloved is outstanding. Breakfast at Aroma is the only time you’ll see a buffet, and this one includes authentic Mexican dishes, eggs made to order and kid-friendly options. Poolside Isla Grill (open for breakfast, lunch and dinner) is a casual spot for fresh fish dishes and Caribbean favorites, while beachfront Restaurant El Mar serves up crisp pizzas and tostadas from a wood-fired oven. Hear to the signature restaurant Lupita for the inventive Mexican fare, or pass the time waiting for a table at the outdoor sushi and ceviche lounge just next door. Sybarites will be at home in the cavernous spa, with its 35,000 square feet of space, 14 treatment rooms and indoor/outdoor hydrothermal circuit, or find all the pampering you need beside one of the three pools or on the cabana-lined white sand beach.
In the Area
Flanked by the Caribbean Sea and wildlife-rich wetlands, Playa Mujeres is a playground for nature lovers. Cruise on The Beloved Hotel’s 68-foot catamaran to boho Isla Mujeres’s beautiful beaches, or head to the world’s second largest barrier reef for scuba diving trips and, in the summer months, chance sightings of whale sharks, just offshore. Golfers should book in advance to score a round on the 18-hole Greg Norman–designed Playa Mujeres Golf Club, and culture seekers can explore nearby Mayan archaeological sites at El Meco, Coba, Chichen Itza and Tulum.
How to Get There
My husband and I went for our 10 year anniversary. Amazing resort from start to finish. Staff so wonderful. Beautiful beach, not over crowded. Perfect relaxing resort on the beach, but did have many activity options daily. Room services was amazing. Had some many special touches throughout the stay.
My husband loved to use the gym for his am lift, while I got to try out their workout classes which were great! About 40 minutes but an amazing workout off all muscle group. The beach body workout with Juilan on the beach was a killer but such a great experience to do a workout on the beach We also go to enjoy yoga on the beach.
Food and drinks were amazing! Especially El Mar on the beach! The sea food was so great! Spa was also amazing. Fernando was great entertainment director, his activites were so fun! Was definitely sad to leave and would go back in a heartbeat!
I booked this place without any research on my travel agents advice. It was our honeymoon. I had just married the woman of my dreams. Then we found beloved. It is heaven on earth. It is beautiful. Walter checked us in. He was very good to us the whole time we were there. In fact everyone knew our names. Just like heaven. Our room had a plunge pool on the roof. It was amazing. Had a very good view of the beach. The beds were very comfortable. Clarissa and Laura took very good care of our room. It was spotless the whole time. The infinity pool is where we met Juan. He took care of the swim up bar. Drinks are plentiful and very good thanks to Juan’s hard work. Then we tried the spa. They had given us a free hydrotherapy. I enjoyed it so much. Our spa fellow Edgar was funny kept the visit full of laughter. Had to schedule a couples massage the next day. The massage the next day was heavenly very calm quiet super relaxing. Yasmin and Fany were pure angels . We were jello after these two beautiful ladies removed all stress from us. Select the spa when you get there you will not regret it. It was heaven. And of course we just had to eat some chow while we were in heaven. The food is incredible. My beautiful bride has lived in New Orleans for a while. She tried playing stump the waiter with Giovanni. She lost. Giovanni our waiter and his kitchen staff can complete with restaurants in NewOrleans. Most of time we stay away from buffets. However the breakfast buffet was very different. First of all they have literally everything you could want for breakfast. Second I noticed a fellow removing food from the buffet based on the time it was on the buffet. Hernan runs a tight ship. He is driven to bring you the best food ever. His food was heaven. His staff were just plain nice to us the whole time. And the Lupita lounge was a favorite at night. Live music. Friendly conversations with folks enjoying heaven. Fernanda kept our drinks full. Strange thing about beloved. You learn everyone’s name because when you are in heaven that’s just the way it is. Heavenly place. Thank you beloved. Thank you God. God bless y’all.
My husband and I just got back from an 8 day stay at the Beloved. This was our first trip to Mexico as well as our first experience with an all-inclusive resort. All I can say is this place completely exceeded all of our expectations.
We were greeted with fresh cold towels and a glass of wine as soon as we pulled into the resort. Cesar, who is the best, immediately checked us into our rooms and spoke with us throughout our stay to ensure we were pleased with everything. He even assisted us with our transportation to get back to the airport.
Another pleasant surprise for our stay were the daily activities you could participate in. The entertainment staff at The Beloved was INCREDIBLE. Major shout out to Fernando and Urnesto on the entertainment staff that kept us having a blast. We did everything with them from snorkeling, kayaking, beach volleyball and even water aerobics. I highly suggest you taking them up on their activites.
Another shout out goes to our friend, Alex. Alex was THE BEST server who never left us without something to eat or drink our entire time we were at the beach. He was so friendly and made us enjoy every day we spent at the beach.
Everyone should check out this resort. You will be treated like royalty and it is the best place to relax and unwind. We cannot wait to come back to this beautiful and magical resort.
My husband and I got back on May 8 from our 8 day vacation celebrating our 25th Anniversary and my birthday at the Beloved. This place was a secluded paradise, my husband and I have been to many other hotels in Mexico and this tops them all.
From the moment we arrived to the morning we left we were treated like royalty. Check in was very quick, since we arrived early and our room wasn’t ready we were escorted to one of the restaurant to have lunch. We had lunch at the Isla Grill which was delicious and the view was beautiful, after lunch we walked around a little before heading back to to lobby. Everything is kept so clean, the grounds are beautiful and so peaceful.
Our room was breathtaking, we had an
Ocean View Terrace Suite with Plunge Pool. We had view of the ocean and the marina. Rooms are serviced twice a day, mini bar was stocked daily and room service came every afternoon to bring either miniatures chocolates or pastries.
Food was amazing, only four restaurant but top notch quality and service. Our favorite was the Lupita Restaurant, real authentic mexican food it was delicious. Staff in all the restaurants were excellent always attentive and very welcoming. Jorge at the El Mar was awesome, such a comedian always had us laughing and Estoban from the grill was so sweet.
We spent our days at the beach, which was beautiful. Beautiful white sand which was kept cleaned from the seaweed all day long. We rented a cabana for the week which was awesome. You get a cooler with water bottles and champagne. Every day we had a waiter to bring us lunch and drinks, we had Alex and Jesus. They were great, our drinks weren’t even finished and there they were bringing us another. Before we ended our day they would bring us the champagne and a coconut filled with delicious fresh fruit.
The spa was amazing, all guests have the therapeutic package included with there stay. We also booked the 80 min couple massage, which was the best massage I ever had.
Entertainment at the Lupita lounge was our favorite. Every night there was a different band or show, very relaxing atmosphere with comfortable lounge chairs to enjoy drinks. Our waiter Alberto was the best, always joking, smiling, singing and dancing. Even had my husbands double espresso ready for him when we were ready to head up for the night. We also loved the natura bar for iced coffee in the afternoon, after our second time there the barista Abraham already knew what we wanted as soon as we walked up to the bar.
Last but not least Managemet, shout out to Paul Castillo. He was the best, always interacting with the guest making sure everything was ok. From adding a different router to our room for better wifi connection, to sending a special birthday drink delivered to my room, a farewell dinner at the Lupita restaurant and a personal goodbye at check out. I can’t say enough about him, he went above and beyond to make sure our stay amazing. We definitely will be returning to the Beloved!!
Just returned home last week from a 7-night trip to Beloved for our 10-year wedding anniversary. We visited Excellence Riviera Cancun for our honeymoon in 2008 and had such a great experience there that we wanted to stay within the same hotel group. We were drawn to the smaller, more intimate setting of Beloved, and it sure did not disappoint! All the pictures really don't do the place justice. From the landscaping to the suites to the restaurants, pools, and beach- it was all just breathtakingly beautiful. The scenery and relaxing resort atmosphere was probably the highlight of my experience.
We splurged a little and got a terrace suite with plunge pool & ocean view. Highly recommend. We requested room 333 in advance and were given that room. I really think we got the best suite in the entire resort- the views were absolutely incredible! Unlike Excellence Riviera Cancun, the rooms had no musty smell- just smelled like fresh, clean air. The beds were very comfortable. The room was bigger than I thought it'd be based on the pictures. The only real complaint about the room is that we did wish there was a working fan in the toilet area.
Housekeeping was overall very good. They did forget to replenish our mini bar with water and snacks a couple days, and I was honestly hoping for a little more special of a turn-down service at night just based on what we experienced at ERC.
The food was generally very good. We ended up eating a TON of Mexican food while we were there which was a pleasant surprise considering we felt like we missed out on Mexican cuisine during our honeymoon at ERC.
Breakfast: Isla Grill is hands-down the best spot for breakfast. We ordered everything from chilaquiles topped with fried eggs to the yummy "American breakfast" to crepes to the Mexican omelette- all of it was SUPER delicious. We enjoyed the fresh fruit, juices, and pastries at their buffet also. The big breakfast buffet at Aroma wasn't my favorite- they had a lot of offerings, but the food wasn't very fresh or all that tasty. It was generally pretty bland. We also got room service breakfast one morning, and it was quick and good. We like our coffee somewhat strong, so if you have similar tastes, I'd recommend asking for an Americano from the different espresso bars rather than ordering the French press coffee that they serve everywhere.
Lunch: Isla Grill was really delicious for lunch also. We enjoyed the salad and dessert bar there too. We enjoyed getting lunch on the beach and did that several times- pizza, guac & chips, nachos, fajitas, paella, tacos, etc. All delicious. El Mar was a little disappointing for lunch.
Dinner: We honestly enjoyed all the restaurants for dinner, but El Mar and Lupita were probably our favorites. There were some misses here and there with a few courses at the other restaurants, but the dinners were overall pretty tasty meals. We also liked the Mexican-themed night a lot. There was an extensive Mexican buffet, a mariachi band, and margaritas. We also had a great hostess and waiter that night- I'm not sure what their names were, but they were very friendly and helpful.
There WAS a little mix-up about our "special dinner" that made us feel a little confused and awkward, so that was a little bit of a bummer. I think it was just a misunderstanding on both parts- no big deal.
Since we stayed for 7 nights, we went over to Excellence Playa Mujeres for dinner one night and ate at Basmati, the Indian restaurant. We enjoyed it. Nothing amazing, but it the food was tasty and pretty different from what Beloved offers, and it did offer a really nice and romantic atmosphere. It was also a nice change of scenery, but we kind of wondered if we should have just stayed at Beloved that night because we just love the vibe so much more there!
Dessert: With the exception of the passion fruit mousse and the little desserts at the Isla Grill lunch buffet, the desserts were overall very disappointing. This is one thing that they could definitely improve! (We also would have loved to have a coffee shop type of place, but I hear they are adding that soon.)
Drinks: We enjoyed the variety of drinks that they offered. FYI, the drinks they serve on the beach during the day are not very strong. I'm guessing this is to keep people from going overboard with the alcohol consumption, but I'm not a big drinker. When I did order my one or two drinks for the afternoon, I wanted to actually taste the booze in it. So I did end up ordering a chaser with my drink a couple times. The drinks at Lupita Lounge were always good. The swim-up bar drinks were also very good, as were the drinks at dinner.
*A word on the menus: they are a bit confusing. Sometimes the offerings make no sense or the descriptions are really vague. OR what you ordered turns out to be much different than what you thought you ordered. I'm bilingual and after reading the Spanish menus, it looks like it's mostly a translation issue. So Beloved, if you're reading this, I will gladly update your menus if you let us come stay a couple more nights on the house. ;-) *
The beach was not gigantic (which I actually enjoyed), and it was really beautiful. The water was pretty- very clear and generally very calm. There was a LITTLE bit of seaweed, but they raked the beach everyday. Pools were nice also, but you do have to bring your own floats.
I used the gym a couple times and enjoyed it. We also were completely surprised by how much we loved the hydrotherapy session that is included with your stay! Don't miss out on that. We also really enjoyed the bike tour with Fernando, and we had a lot of fun on the paddle boards. We did a kayak tour as well.
There aren't a ton of nighttime activities which was fine by us since we aren't big party people. It was honestly refreshing NOT to have some cheesy circus or Elvis show going on every night. We loved just grabbing a drink and enjoying the live music in Lupita Lounge! There was a reggae band, a guitarist, and a Cuban band the nights we were there. We enjoyed all of the music acts except for the final one (Divas.) It was supremely awkward, and we left pretty shortly after they started. The silent party was hilarious also a TOTAL blast. We loved it! We were pretty disappointed that the White Night was moved and the bonfire on the beach was canceled because of "rain." We had been looking forward to the bonfire especially.
The service was very, very good across the board. Paul Castillo made an effort to speak to each guest and was very professional and kind to us during our conversation. Staff of note: Angel at Isla Grill, Yon (Miguel) and Javier at El Mar, Alberto at Lupita Lounge (nice dance moves, my friend), Alex, Eduardo, and Oscar on the beach, Fernando in activities, Gilberto at the swim-up bar, and all the wonderful, professional staff at Lupita Restaurant. Really most of the staff that we encountered were all especially kind, courteous, and attentive! (The only place where the service wasn't spectacular was Natura Bar.)
We absolutely loved our trip to Beloved! I highly recommend it, especially for couples and individuals who are hoping to relax, reconnect with one another, and avoid the party scene. It was perfect for our anniversary getaway/celebration (and our first trip away from our kids.) I don't know if we'll have a chance to return again, but it was an amazing, unforgettable trip in such a beautiful place. They really take care of you here. Well done, Beloved Hotel!
