Around 30 minutes north of Cancún’s airport and party-loving Hotel Zone, The Beloved Hotel Playa Mujeres by Excellence Group occupies a sandy patch along quiet Playa Mujeres. It opened as La Amada in 2009, and the rebranding to the Beloved Hotel detached the 109-room property from the neighboring marina, but added an impressive all-inclusive setup. All-white balcony-lined buildings surround the two main pools and landscaped gardens, while meandering trails lead to the two-story Casita blocks and a narrow but crowd-free white sand beach.
Bed and Bath
Spread across three main buildings and clusters of freestanding townhouses, guestrooms share a modern, romantic look in marble white and dashes of lilac. Enormous beds, separate sitting areas and outdoor daybeds encourage lazing, as does a well-stocked, all-inclusive bar. Zippy WiFi, iHome docks and 42-inch flat-screen TVs supply the modern comforts, and there are Nespresso machines for the morning caffeine fix. Part open-plan bathrooms have double vanities, gigantic showers with multiple jets and lovely Bulgari amenities; separate Jacuzzis take center stage in the bedrooms.
Dispelling any fears about all-inclusive dining, the food at Beloved is outstanding. Breakfast at Aroma is the only time you’ll see a buffet, and this one includes authentic Mexican dishes, eggs made to order and kid-friendly options. Poolside Isla Grill (open for breakfast, lunch and dinner) is a casual spot for fresh fish dishes and Caribbean favorites, while beachfront Restaurant El Mar serves up crisp pizzas and tostadas from a wood-fired oven. Hear to the signature restaurant Lupita for the inventive Mexican fare, or pass the time waiting for a table at the outdoor sushi and ceviche lounge just next door. Sybarites will be at home in the cavernous spa, with its 35,000 square feet of space, 14 treatment rooms and indoor/outdoor hydrothermal circuit, or find all the pampering you need beside one of the three pools or on the cabana-lined white sand beach.
In the Area
Flanked by the Caribbean Sea and wildlife-rich wetlands, Playa Mujeres is a playground for nature lovers. Cruise on The Beloved Hotel’s 68-foot catamaran to boho Isla Mujeres’s beautiful beaches, or head to the world’s second largest barrier reef for scuba diving trips and, in the summer months, chance sightings of whale sharks, just offshore. Golfers should book in advance to score a round on the 18-hole Greg Norman–designed Playa Mujeres Golf Club, and culture seekers can explore nearby Mayan archaeological sites at El Meco, Coba, Chichen Itza and Tulum.
How to Get There
My wife and I decided on a whim to come the Beloved to escape reality for a few days based on a friend's recommendation. We were not expecting to the best service of our "traveling careers." From the moment we entered their property we felt taken care of. The check-in process was not only seamless but relaxing thanks to the warm massage pillow and cold margarita!
Our Junior Ocean Suite room was much larger then the pictures portrayed, including the extremely comfortable California King bed.
The restaurants had large menus offering a variety of entrées and were consistently good, in particular the Steak House. The live entertainment was great, in particular the fire show which was phenomenal. The staff kept pouring us drinks and making sure we were comfortable whilst being entertained. They even had a gelato shop at night with a variety of options.
There were always free cabanas available on the beachfront which was quite large, considering the size of the resort. The beach service was great. The staff consistently kept our glasses filled! My only complaint is that the pool water was a tad bit warm.
Our overall experience was so amazing throughout our stay, that it left my wife and I continuing to ask each other "what's the catch." There is no catch. We look forward to our next trip to the Beloved!
The experience we had here at the Beloved was unlike any other. We felt like royalty the whole time, the service is so amazing everyone is so attentive and ready to make you feel at home. The facility is super clean and beautiful you won’t want to go back home! Thank you to everyone that assisted us from the moment we stepped foot outside of our car Mex was such great help, Armando our bartender was a great guy cool conversation and party recommendations, and Jesus our server at the beach was always attentive and even saved us our favorite spot at the beach every time he saw us he knew what we were drinking already. Amazing service you won’t get this anywhere else in Cancun! thank you to everyone else as well that made our stay so much more special! especially the room service ladies that turned our room into a romantic scene every time we came back after dinner. My fiancé and I can’t wait to come back!
This was our 6th time staying at the Beloved. Each time, we worry that the experience won't live up to our past expectations. But, there was no need to worry even with the changes they made. The aspect that continues to make The Beloved so special is the incredible staff, how they connect with guests, the attention to details and what they will do to make sure your needs are met.
Teresa Cal, head of housekeeping continues to be a standout! She does an exceptional job overseeing the rooms and makes sure they remain beautiful and well maintained. Teresa is hands-on with her housekeepers and with the guests. One day I saw her joining her housekeepers to clean one of the Casitas so it was ready for check-in. Other times, I observed her talking to guests to make sure their bed configurations were adapted when they weren't able to get the types of room they requested. Teresa is an integral part of the management team and goes above and beyond to make sure guests get the full Beloved experience!
The housekeepers spend a lot of time in each room and use a team approach to thoroughly clean inside and outside the room, to restock the rooms, to provide turn-down service at night and to add special touches such as towel art, rose petals, etc. especially if guests are celebrating special events. A shout out to one of our housekeepers for going above and beyond to decorate our room; Laura del Carmen.
The management team meets daily to review the check-in/check-outs, discuss guests' comments, resolve issues, etc. Being that the Beloved is a small boutique hotel, they are on top of things and know what their guests are experiencing. When we were there, mosquitos were a major issue. This limited the number of restaurants where we could eat since the outdoor dining options were problematic. Repellent was provided at every restaurant and at the beach, but this didn't stop the mosquitos. By the second day, the Beloved had a company out spraying and the mosquito problem became a non-issue.
During the day, we enjoyed sitting out on the beach under a palapa. The Beloved replaced much of the beach seating. Instead of round day beds, they now have 2-person chaise lounges with separate adjustable backs in addition to the single chaise lounges. Each morning we were greeted by one of the beach concierges, Liliana. She was all over the place helping guests to set up their spots on the beach. In between all of this, she even made time to create special sand art messages for guests who were leaving or celebrating special occasions.
The veteran beach/pool waiters continue to be one of the reasons people feel so welcomed at the Beloved. They are very hard-working and quickly establish rapport with the guests. They continue to welcome us back, greet us by name and remember our beverage orders. On this trip we were served by Alex and Jesus who continue to do an amazing job. When we see the waiters (Alex, Jesus, Eduardo and Luis), it is like being back with old friends.
Side note- we were very pleased with the beach area. This was the clearest the water has ever been and virtually no seaweed.
The Beloved is trying to be environmentally friendly and the bar drinks are no longer served with straws. This is to be commended, however, it is difficult to drink ice beverages such as Mud Slides or Daquiris without them. A suggestion would be to provide paper straws with these drinks.
Each day we started with the breakfast buffet at Le Bisou. We were always warmly greeted by the hostess who remembered our room number. Even though it is a buffet, the staff finds ways to go above and beyond to please. One morning I asked if there were any chocolate croissants (they had them the day before). One of the employees who checks the buffet (I believe her name was Karoll?) apologized and told me they would have them the next day. When we sat down at a table the next day, she brought over a plate of croissants, Talk about going above and beyond! In addition, our waiter, Angel, remembered our drink orders and would have these ready to go when we sat down.
We continue to enjoy the great addition of the Caffetto, the coffee shop. It is very convenient to be able to get coffee, ice cream, sandwiches, treats, etc. to go, from 7:00 am - 10:00 pm. We also enjoyed having a crepe from the food truck in back of the Caffetto. It was wonderful and we liked the addition of the hammocks to this area.
We also enjoyed the classes offered and took part in the morning fitness classes (Yoga, mat pilates, boxing, etc.) The dancing classes, led by Alfredo were also a nice addition. Even though the classes might not be well attended, it is important to continue to offer classes such as these to give guests alternative activities to do if they are looking for something other than sitting by the beach/pool or eating/drinking.
Thank you to the Beloved Staff for making our 6th visit just as wonderful as our 1st. We are already looking at dates to see when we can return for our 7th visit!
