How to Get There
For the Value I paid to get on the vacation the Resort was over run daily with day pass people that were not from the resort and there fore made the buffet lines and water park less enjoyable. The Value for the hotel wasn't what was paid.
The atmosphere at the resort was hit and miss with the staff. There was some that were amazing to see daily others were just there and you could tell there was no enthusiasm
We chose this resort because the online reviews seemed great and we loved the idea of a ‘tweens and teens’ club for our 11 and 13 year old. We weren't disappointed!
Resort Overview – The resort is small-medium sized compared to some other resorts we’ve stayed at, and we loved the size of it because you were always a minute away from the beach or the pools or back to your room. Everything is close and so we never worried about where the kids were because if needed to find them, they were always somewhere nearby.
Restaurants: We tried all of the restaurants all of them had great food. The pizza restaurant was delicious, the buffet restaurant was always plentiful with lots of good options that never ran out. The restaurant down near the beach (the Moonstone) has great lunch options including jerk chicken, pasta bar, paninis etc). There is a snack bar in the water park that we all loved, and a snow-cone hut. The restaurant inside the lobby area was delicious and incredibly unique, serving meals on fishbowls, mini-guillotines, Mr. potato-heads, toasters, etc. The kids loved that.
Pools and Beach: There were three pools, none of them are huge but they suit the size of the resort. The main one next to the buffet was the biggest and had the volleyball net. The infinity pool has the swim-up bar, and the small pool over near the first block of rooms was the quietest and had the best wi-fi reception. The beach is beautiful, and there were always plenty of chairs available in the sun and under the trees for shade. The grounds were always well maintained and clean. The water park was a huge highlight. There was a lazy river that was great for cooling down. There were 2 big slides, but not too big or scary, perfect for kids and teens. There is a whole section for little kids and toddlers in the waterpark but we didn’t really spend time there. It never felt too busy, except on two occasions where the water park was open for the afternoon for local school groups who were bussed in for a few hours. I think it’s great to allow access to local kids as well so that didn’t bother us, but since that made it crowded we just spent those few hours doing other things on the resort. There was never a shortage of chairs at any of the pools, or the waterpark, or the beach.
Entertainment - We didn’t do a lot of the evening entertainment activities but the house band that we heard playing a few times in the evenings were really talented. We never felt that the quality of service was tied to tipping. Sometimes we tipped the bartenders, sometimes not and it didn’t change the level of service we received. There was never any pressure to tip all the time.
Excursions - Rather than go through the resort tour companies we try to support local businesses, and so, in this case, we hired a local driver (Chris Linton) for the day to take us on our excursions. He had been recommended to us by friends who had recently also been to Jamaica. We got in touch with him before we left and he helped create our day of excursions. There are so many options that he can offer and help you decide, depending on what you’re in the mood for. He picked us up in his fully air-conditioned mini-van and brought us to the Blue Holes (I can’t recommend this enough, our number 1 highlight), Konoko Falls (beautiful) and Scotchies restaurant for lunch (amazing authentic jerk chicken and pork).
Rooms The rooms were fine. Nothing fancy, but very clean and a good size for the four of us. The rooms were clean and serviced every day morning and evening. We had asked in advance for a king and two singles instead of the usual configuration of 2 double beds, and that was not a problem. The room was set up as we had requested prior to arrival. The beds were comfortable, the air conditioner worked well, there was a tv with lots of good channels, a room safe, and a bar fridge fully stocked with water and soft drinks. There is no alcohol stocked in the rooms, but we knew that was the case and as a family resort it didn’t bother us since it keeps people from partying in their rooms which keeps the room blocks nice and quiet. The balcony had a table and 2 chairs and plenty of space to relax. Our view was out onto the gardens which were very tranquil.
Kids – There was an abundance of activities for kids. They have a kids club up to age 10, and then a tweens and teens club for 11-17-year-olds. Our kids are 11 and 13 and they loved the club. They met a whole gang of buddies their own age and while the parents relaxed the kids did laser tag, sailing, glass bottom boat rides, capture the flag, soccer, float-in movie at the pool, tweens/teens disco, and a lot more. The staff who ran the tweens club, Ki-Ki and Ri-Ri were absolutely wonderful.
Any issues we had were minor and we wouldn’t say that any of it should deter people from going to this resort. Its’ very much a family-focused resort so if you’re looking for quiet romance it’s probably not the resort for you, but if you’re going with kids or teens then it doesn’t get much better. This resort checks all the boxes that we think are important. Clean, safe, good food, great beach, friendly staff, lots of activities available.
Firstly, I just want to say, THIS IS AN AMAZING RESORT! Just book it, you won't be disappointed!
I travelled to Jewel Runaway Bay with my husband and 11-year-old son from April 27-May 3; 7 days in paradise. I'll break my review down by category, as this helped me immensely when I was reading reviews and deciding where to book.
We booked a water view room and were given one right outside the waterpark. It was great, except with 2 double beds we didn't think we'd be comfortable. When I asked, within 10 minutes they moved us to another water view room with 1 King bed, and then brought in a cot for my son. The cot was huge; easily larger than the size of a single bed. Our first room was on the second floor, our second on the first floor. Being on the first floor was very convenient and I suggest it to anyone. No stair climbing. The beds were SO comfortable! I had an excellent sleep the entire time we were there. Our room was similar to what you'd find at a middle-class hotel in Canada. I'd say Jewel rooms were cleaner though! Very, very clean, and housekeeping worked hard to keep it that way. We had a great patio where we could sit in the morning and drink coffee. The TV is larger than you'd typically see at a resort, with a ton of channels. Some foreign-language channels, but mostly English ones. We were able to catch the Raptors game, and found a great movie channel for the times we wanted to relax in bed. The air conditioning is powerful. You will not be hot inside your room, trust me! I'm always hot and was so comfortable having the room set around 68. Our fridge was stocked daily with pop, water, and juice. They come around and ask you want you'd like. It was wonderful. There's also coffee and tea etc in the rooms.
I loved the food and so did my family! We are extremely picky about food. We went to the buffet (Coral Cafe) a lot. It's open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The selection is huge. THE STEAK WAS TO DIE FOR. Melt in your mouth right off the grill. Court Jesters is open for lunch and dinner and had the most delicious pizza menu. I loved the jerk chicken calzone! An absolute must try. The dinner menu was great too; more variety than lunch. Aquamarina Beach Bar and Grill was your typical pub-style food. Cheeseburgers, sausages, wraps, nachos & cheese, fries, etc. My son grabbed snacks here a lot to take back to our room. You can take anything from any of the restaurants "to go". Moonstone by Venchenzo was good. We only went there once for dinner and all shared the mahi mahi, seafood linguini, and lamb shanks. This place was fancier and therefore portion size was a little smaller. The Jade Samurai was so much fun! We sat in a big group with other guests and got full on teppanyaki show. Grilled shrimp, chicken, beef, and salmon along with grilled rice and vegetables. The main entree was a fixed menu, but there was a choice of 2 different appetizers and desserts. Take note that you are sitting right in front of a grill so it got hot! All restaurants are open air. We unfortunately didn't check out the sushi or the Caribbean place.
BOOZE / DRINKS
We aren't big drinkers, but these drinks are strong and made anyway you want them. I could typically only finish half my drinks because I'd get buzzed. My fav was the Dirty Banana. They have a "suggested drink" everyday too so that you can try something different if you want to. We had fresh ground espresso every morning from the bar. Delicious! My husband was obsessed with the lattes. I recommend you try them over the plain old coffee.
Clean, clean, clean. Beautiful water, caramel coloured sand. Always tons of beach loungers. Lifeguards and security everywhere had me feeling extremely safe. We snorkelled off the beach every morning. Coral reefs and lot of fish to be seen. They do suggest you stay within the swim area, although we ventured beyond it into the reef. Not something I would necessarily suggest, as I heard that they don't want you way out there for safety reasons. I get it. The beach was by far my favourite part of the resort. It was just so beautiful!
We were in the 1100-block and our wifi was (almost) perfect. I was able to go online anytime, and my son could even watch Netflix with little issue. I think we had issues with lagging maybe twice. I'm not sure if it's this good in every room?
We didn't swim in the pools a ton, but spent the afternoon on our last day in the infinity pool with the swim up bar. The water was warm and we sat and drank and drank and floated. Was a lot of fun! I wish I had gone in it more.
My son loved it! The slides (which I went on) were surprisingly thrilling. I also really enjoyed floating around the lazy river. There's a bar and restaurant right in the waterpark making it super easy to grab a snack. There's also a snow cone hut which was a big hit with my 11-year-old. He double fisted them all day long.
God I loved the staff! If say 9/10 were the friendliest people you could ever meet. They loved to chat and were all very helpful. The afternoon we arrived I had the worst headache of my life and the on-site nurse was wonderful. She gave me some Tylenol and seemed genuinely happy to help. From the grounds keepers to the servers to the housekeepers; such a lovely bunch of people! TIP THEM. I was shocked with how many ppl I saw not tipping. I get that you spend a lot on a vacation, but we brought $100USD for tips and were able to give everyone a little something. They make maybe $50/week. Tips are more than appreciated.
The grounds were kept immaculate. Not a leaf or flower out of place. Not a speck of garbage. I was impressed! They had fogged the resort the week before we came, and honest to goodness I saw ONE mosquito our entire trip.
We are excited to return to Jewel Runaway Bay. This resort made us fall in love with Jamaica. I'd highly recommend it to families or couples. Please know that I'm also very picky. We honestly cannot wait to go back! Was worth every penny and then some. Thanks for everything!!! Ya mon.
Jamaica was beautiful and a place we would love to go back but our stay at jewel wasn’t the best. Our room did not have air over half the time we were there. Our room was hot, sticky and wet. We definitely would not stay there again.
We did an excursion to Jewel Beach Resort on our Disney Cruise...we loved it! It was well worth the money! It is the favorite part of our vacation for our 7-year-old. He loved it and we can't wait to return for a full week. The jerk chicken was amazing! Great place for families.
