How to Get There
I am most disappointed about my stay at Jewel Runaway Bay. I arrived at about 7:30 p.m. I received no towels on arrival, neither did I get any welcome fruit punch. I got all of this at Jewel Dunns River. Also, the overall state of the buildings left much to be desired. I know that it is an old building, but that should be no excuse, as this is not the only hotel built more than 30 years ago. It needs serious updates urgently. It is not even up to a 3 star. Certainly not from what I've seen. I was assigned a room that clearly has not been cleaned properly. It smelt of mold, I had to get a room change. The front desk rep did so quite happily. The 2nd room I was assigned to was better than the first, but still, needed updates, tiles, fixtures etc. I noticed that I did not have any face towels, washcloths or bath mats in my room and called the front desk for at least washcloths to be sent to my room that night. I fell asleep near midnight waiting for housekeeping to bring them. The following morning I was scheduled to leave by 7 a.m. I had to call the front desk again and remind them about my request for washcloths the night before. They were more responsive and I received them soon thereafter.
I wanted to dine at the Italian restaurant the evening I arrived, but the waitress at the front was so ungracious that I decided, after a long, hard day, traveling almost 3 hours, I owe it to myself to be comfortable and happy. I opted for the buffet restaurant instead. The food was mediocre, and the variety was not as wide as expected.
Since I was scheduled to leave at 7 a.m. (time the restaurants open for breakfast), I asked if I could arrange to get something to take away. At first, I was told by the concierge rep that breakfast is at 7:30. I had to correct her and she checked and said, well even so my request could not be met. I asked her if she could talk with the chef. She called another staff member, senior to her, and she was unsure that this could be done. Luckily another hotel staff member overheard our conversation and he told them who to call and what to do. Clearly, it was not the 1st time that such a request was made at the hotel. So, a call was made and I was told, you can pick it up in the morning. They told me who to ask for. When I went, the following morning, and asked forhim, the 1st person told me no one by that name works in the restaurant. I insisted that that was the name I was given. He then asked someone else, and she too had no clue. She then asked someone else who happened to be the person I was to go to. Unfortunately, however, the information was miscommunicated to me. I should have gone earlier and would have been allowed to dine early. He was not aware that I wished to take away the meal and had to see if he could find containers as they had none. I must say though that he was very gracious and accommodating. I eventually, ate a little and took some baked goods and was on my way.
I must say that overall the service was fair, but this property need serious updating and some of the staff need better training. I don't see myself returning to this location any time soon. Jewel Dunn's River was my first introduction to this hotel chain and I was blown away by their service, facilities, food and overall experience.
My husband and I stayed at the Jewel for 5 nights as part of a wedding party. Our first impressions of the hotel were not great as our in-room safe and lights were not working. The issue was resolved pretty quickly. We also had an issue with water on our last night at the resort. We came back to the room around midnight and there was no running water at all. We called staff and the issue was resolved in about 30 minutes. The bed in the room was very comfortable.
The food at the resort was just okay. The breakfast buffet was decent and the coffee was delicious. Lunch and dinner at the all-purpose restaurant was a bit hit and miss. the Italian restaurant and the sushi restaurant (which is a different reservation than the teppanyaki restaurant) are not worth trying. The teppanyaki restaurant and experience was lovely although it did take almost an hour after our reservation for the chef to get started. The restaurant next to the lobby was also decent. The grill and the pizza place are great places to casually dine. I would suggest asking for your fries to be extra crispy at the Grill as the fries are generally undercooked.
Lastly, the pool and beach areas were great. The swimming area was adequate but the reef did not allow you to go too far on the kayak or non-motorized water equipment for your own safety.
Overall, our stay was pleasant. We would give this hotel 3.5/5 as the hotel is in need of general renovations.
Spent a week at the Jewel Runaway Bay over the Thanksgiving Holiday. We arrived on Thanksgiving day. The resort was rather crowded until Saturday and the pool chairs were in high demand. Then it cleared out and it was rather pleasant the rest of our week. This was a return visit to this resort. We had been here about 3 years ago. This time we stayed in a plunge pool room by the small pool. A much larger suite. It was very nice with a nice large shower. The plunge pool at this time of the year was not what we had hoped for though. It was pretty cold. The sun did not shine on the pool most of the day, if it shined on the pool at all. This was due to the angle of the sun was so low the building blocked it out. It would probably would have been great in the summer. The water park was great. It was brand new the last time we were here. It was still in great shape. The food was excellent for a resort. This time we were able to do some excursions. We did Dunn's River Falls and the Blue Hole. Really a nice small resort with really nice people. I would definitely recommend this place.
We had a great family vacation at Jewel Runaway Bay. This was truly a great place for families with kids. From the waterpark to the kids club, the food and staff, it exceeded our expectations. Giving perfect marks 5/5 is difficult to do as I believe everything needs to be exceptional, which is also not realistic in mind. That being said, it was pretty close. We were skeptical upon reading some of the reviews and moreso shortly after we checked-in late, late Saturday night, but that all went away quickly during our first day and persisted throughout our stay to the point where we are committed to returning next year.
The resort is about an hour from the MoBay airport, which makes for a trek if you are in late like we were, however, it puts you that much closer to most of the popular excursions like Dunn's River Falls, Dolphin Cove, Mystic Mountain and Ocho Rios for shopping.
From check-in to the check-out, all of the staff at JRB were very helpful, polite and definitely added to our positive experience. The Teens and Tweens Club was awesome! Our daughter really enjoyed the daily activities and personalized relationships. Michelle does a fantastic job getting to know all of the kids, makes every effort to inlcude others in the activities and above all, has the patience of a saint to manage 15 - 20 individuals every night at 10pm for capture the flag on the beach (which is very popular and give the adults an hour to enjoy a drink and watch the game).
All of the bar/restaurant staff where very polite, entertaining and did there best to accomodate any specific requests. We thought the nightly entertainment was just that, entertaining. Jamaica night, the kids night in the water park with games and fire eater, Michael Jackson tribute, Circus night were all well done and fun for everyone. The food was just as expected, fresh, authentic and well prepared. I can understand some of the reviews which mention typical "all-inclusive" food but if you stick to what I would call the more home style items, they were fantastic. Morning bacon, fresh waffles, omelettes, freshly made juice and smoothies, salad bar or freshly made salad, pasta bar, and meat the grill, the buffet was better than average in our opinion. The a la carte restaurants were very enjoyable as well and easy to get into.
The beach was top notch and snorkelling experience was better than expected. Take a banana with you and you will have a great video opportunity all within 20 ft from shore. The water park was a great daily activity, with a relaxing lazy river, and 2 water slides for the older kids, splash pad for those younger. A bar, grill and snow cone kiosk are all within range for whatever you may need.
The rooms are a bit dated, but we found ours clean and with all amenities. Lets be honest, if you are spending more time in your room besides a quick shower and sleep, I think you are missing the point of taking a vacation in tropics. Same for the WiFi, it was spotty, really spotty, but who cares....it's Jamaica. Put down the phone and enjoy why you are there. The only reason for the 4 rating is due to the dated rooms. We've stayed at the Iberostar Rose Hall Suites, and yes, its much more elegate, but much more money. We like both. The Iberostar is much bigger and walk was needed for most things (bar, restaurant, disco, etc). We liked that most of the restaurants, pools, entertainment and beach were all within close proximity to each other. Depends what you like, I guess.
Bottom line for us, if the kids are in tow, JRB is excellent! And since this was a family vacation, it met and exceeded our expectations.
Travelled with husband and 2 year old. Met other in-laws and family members at the hotel.
Pros: Good food. The breakfast buffet was perfect, lovely drinks, friendly helpful staff, brilliant kids club and water park. The massage with Joy was amazing, great water sports activities. Resident band was brilliant. There were lots of things to do in the evening to keep everyone entertained both adults and kids.
Cons: hotel is in desperate need of a renovation. Our room had old furniture when we opened the draws an awful smell came from them. The storage cupboard was in the bathroom and had no door so we had no where to hang our clothes because it was a Damp area. We had two extra spare mouldy smelling beds, old tv, air con had layers of dust on it. We complained and the staff did their very best to make the changes. However it still wasn't up to standard.
My sister in law had a room where the wires were exposed on door upon arrival this was fixed within the first few days. However after a week the marble concrete dropped off from the walls in her bedroom and they changed her room that day. We were lucky both her and her daughter wasn't in the room at the time so no one was injured. For the amount of money we spent for the trip this should never happen.
The hotel restaurants do not allow you to order food and take it to your room. If you wanted or needed this you had to order room service at 5USD for adults and 3USD for children. The pizza restaurant had no covering or rooftop so when it rained you couldn't order food as there would be no where to sit and eat. We were told that if we wanted pizza we would need to order room service. Ridiculous!
Overall the hotel was ok. The staff make this hotel without them it would be nothing. Management need to invest in this property and it's staff so that it can fulfil its potential.
If you plan on staying in your hotel room then it's not the one. But if you're going to explore the island and use hotel facilities then it's okay.
If I returned then it would ONLY be for my son who thoroughly enjoyed the water park and kids club. Its perfect for kids. Other than that it isn't likely I'd return to this hotel.
I didn't allow these things to ruin our holiday so I still had an amazing time on the island but this hotel was a disappointment.
Thanks to all the staff in the kids club, my niece really loved Goofy especially and all the restaurant, grill and bar staff!
