Quick 5 day Family Vacay - long review
Reviewed 6 hours ago

Well...I am a travel agent. I wanted to check out this resort as I am sending clients here and the waterpark personally sold me. We have 2 boys ages 7 & 9. It was over an hour from the airport. When we arrived they took our bags and were welcoming. Check in...especially as a travel agent...was not as welcoming as I felt it should be. But it was late and we were hungry.

ROOM: We had room 1015 a plunge pool / oceanfront. Great location. The room was big. Our boys each had their OWNsingle bed. We had a King. The bathroom was upgraded and the room was clean.
Our PPool area could use some upgrading...but the boys jumped in and loved it. Not heated though. We also loved that we were meters from the ocean and felt like we had our own pool area and hot tub too. Great set up. Alexander our area pool guard was pretty great to us.

The FOOD: Breakfast was awesome. The Omelette lady(s) was so sweet. Egg Boy so funny. And Ivan makes a mean breakfast shake :) We ate lunch mostly at the grill. Grilled cheese was a hit for our boys. We did Italian one night. I loved my salmon. But my hubby and boys didn't like their meals. We went over to the Buffet for a second dinner. The Japanese was AMAZING. But our chef cooking for us was very reserved. My oldest was disappointed to see the other tables laughing and getting quite the show and we had to ask our chef to repeat herself because we couldn't hear her. She made a great meal. But we were disappointed with our service. My 9 year old said 2 out or 10 for that place. :( We had him pumped for a fun meal. :(

SERVICE: We have mixed reviews. Mostly positive for sure. Bonus. Everyone speaks english. So no communication issues for us anyway. At the waterpark the guy making snow cones...was SO AWESOME to our boys. Wish I had written down his name. Lifeguards were happy. Another guy spent time trying to teach my son to play pool. The tall guy at the grill deserves a medal :) Overall mostly smiles and everyone was mostly helpful. It was "laid back service" though. I did find we often had to ASK more than once for more coffee or a refill or ketchup etc. And it was slow season....we really should have been overwhelmed with attention ;) But I can't say anything bad. I felt the least happy with guest services/check in.

KIDS: My oldest could use the "teen/tween" club and my youngest the younger club.
They both made friends. And my oldest would run there on his own. We felt very safe. He really liked it. Stacy Ann was great with my youngest. She really made him feel welcome and was so good to him. MOvie night with popcorn and snacks was fun. Due to weather some events were cancelled. I wish there was better communication i.e. we spent a lot of time trying to find the outdoor disco pool party. Only to be told it was not happening. Lots of activities daily and I feel during high season...kids would be VERY happy. The waterpark? not as BIG as it looks online. And that was perfect. We set up in an area and our kids ran free for most of the time. It doesn't open until 10;30am. On weekends it became much busier as they let locals use it as well so maybe make sure you use your time wisely during the week. They also have free boats and water bikes etc at the beach!!! Tip nicely ;) Our kids loved their independence at this resort. They would go get popcorn on their own, snow cones and drinks. At the buffet they have an area built lower for kids to get their own food. They ate a lot every meal :) ** If you have a child that needs food restrictions...YOU need to monitor that. The staff just gave our kids what they asked for. And...we we totally ok with it. :)

BEACH: AWESOME. Soooo clean. ZERO seaweed. Zero garbage. The fish eat bread from your hands. And you can snorkel. It's not a huge walking beach. We felt comfortable enough walking outside the resort up as far as we could go.

RESORT: I made an effort to walk around and take videos of room locations etc. I saw quite a few rooms emptied getting repainted. If you are in a premier/basic room you will be at the back of the resort with little views of anything. Ocean view...brings you closer to the pool area mid resort. Plunge pool brings you closer still..especially to the waterpark. You have little views yet lots of privacy. Oceanfront lets you SEE the beach. You are CLOSE to the beach/pools. Oceanfront with pool is what we had. Almost felt like a private resort within the resort. And....you really can't get a better location to the beach and a pool but you are on the opposite side of the waterpark. THIS RESORT IS SMALL SO NOT A BIG DEAL AT ALL. The only other better room is the one bedroom oceanfront with plunge pool. I do feel this area overall needs upgrading visually. As you are paying MUCH MORE...and I know it has potential to be AWESOME.

ADULTS: The evening shows were ok and there is a small stage located in the buffet area. My husband was called up on the stage for one event. Kids loved that. lol They had a blackjack night and white night and some other posted events. The Disco..was smelly and HOT. I asked and they said it will be getting upgraded...but not right away. If you are looking to party hard this may not be the place for you. The gym was decent and we went a few times.

OVERALL: We would go back. The kids really loved this resort. Having been to MANY places. I know that this place needs some upgrading and the service can be better. They have been taken over and have new management etc. This hopefully will bring positive change. If you are easy going and relaxed. If you are looking for a smaller resort. Fun for your family. Decent food and drinks. Clean rooms. An AMAZING little beach. This place is for you. If you have HIGH END tastes. A big budget. Expect exceptional service. This resort may disappoint right now. I would recommend spending more and upgrade your rooms if you can. BUT...I do feel you will be happy if you are someone who just needs a great family vacay. Your kids will THANK YOU :)

Property has potential
Reviewed 1 day ago

I stayed with my wife and 6 month old daughter for 2 nights at the Jewel Runaway Bay. The property has a lot of potential but is in need of renovation. The rooms are a bit dated but comfortable. The grounds of the property was clean but more could be done to enhance the feel of the property. The waterpark is a big attraction but we did not get to experience it. The restaurants are also in need of updating. We found the food mediocre at best. It is an all inclusive so gauge your expectations accordingly. The beach was nice and very big. The hotel recently came under new ownership. Based on my experience at hotels owned by the new management, I expect this property to be upgraded to a much higher standard. The location is really good as it is close enough to attractions and MoBay and Kingston are short drives. I would stay again provided the upgrades are made to the property.

Second trip to Jamaica better than first

Upon arrival to the hotel as we used our own transportation, they had our bags and everything whisked away quite quickly to our room which was located near the front of main buffet/small pool. Not much noise at all and was actually good for late night entertainment as we had our 3 year old with us and she would be sleeping and we could hear and watch the entertainment from our patio. The gentleman helping with bags was not pushy for tip actually nobody really was there which was great which is why I loved to ensure to tip and give away items we had. So with the staff I thought across the board amazing, very friendly to all and always treated my little one special which she obviously loved. The water park was amazing, so much fun for my little one and good for us too as there is a designated little water park with three sides to play on while there's chairs, food stand for you burger nacho supreme needs and a bar. The Life guards are on top of things which I loved also. I kinda tested two just to see if they spotted something about to happen and they were on it. Great team. The resort itself? Run down? Guys come on if you have never been on a vacation before just stay in your own city and goto the most expensive Hotel, this place was amazing. Great room, little small but did just right. Fridge stocked with water and juice daily, coffee maker, King size and twin for the little one. The rest of the resort also looked amazing. As with most places they are always do work or painting. It's called maintained which it is. The kids club ladies were amazing, my wife met her twins working there ha. Just let the young one there fur a couple hours here and there and she wanted to keep going back. Onto the food, absolutely great. The jerk hut had jerk chicken (not the greatest but it does the trick) hit dog, burger, chicken penini.. the buffet was great, of course Airways nice fresh omlette station in morning. Anyone annoyed by egg boy must listen to him and realize how smart that man really is. He has retained a lot of information. Great salads, fresh fruits. At dinner I was amazed every night at buffet to have a great meat station, fresh sirloin, pork shoulder, steak, cut to perfection. Between that and salad I was done lol so good. The Italian restaurant is a courses meal which our kid wouldn't want to sit still for and we were worried about taking her to see Ninja knife lol however jesters pizza was so amazing. We ended up having it 4 out of 7 days so addicting. As for the drinkers reading this, they serve quick with good top shelf alcohol. Making great drinks everyone. My wife recommends the milky banana with vodka, and the beer you can't go wrong with, with a nice bloody Mary, or a nice coffee with Baileys or rum liquor. The Beach always kept well, garbage always thrown out any enjoy cups removed. Life person out on beach. Great swimming and lots of chairs. There was a small hiccup on our second to last day with our key cards not working, after reprogramming twice, changing battery once, they changed the entire reader inside and have us a 4:30pm checkout with our bus arrival at 5. Very much appreciated. Can't wait to see you guys again. I am a avid traveler and reviewer and usually when I see a good review I wonder if someone working at Hotel wrote it, I assure you I wish I could work near there is too much fun. We got spoiled. Thanks guys

Most Relaxing Vacation

This was our second visit with Jewel Runaway Bay. We had multiple families there. We enjoy the variety of restaurants in addition to the buffet. I was pleased with the healthier vegetable and salad options. Tim and Chamille gave us exceptional service at the buffet and made us feel like family. The beach and water park make this a great resort for families. My main gripe is that the bathrooms in the rooms are not private, which causes some inconvenience for families. My main love of this resort is that we do not have to leave the resort and can just relax with no stress.

Nice staff, mediocre resort
Reviewed 6 days ago

Travel and bus to the resort were fine, no need to do a private one. We did Mobay both ways and loved it.

Check in was awful. Check in is at 3, we arrived at 5 and the room STILL wasnt ready. Sat for another 40min in the un-air conditioned lobby with two small kids before it was ready. Bellhop will get your bag and meet you there........no bellhops at the bellhop station....finally one of the front desk people helped us.

Room was fine. Yes, kind of beat up (bathroom door handle broken, one of the sliders to the deck area was fused in place). But overall not bad. Good AC. Hot water took a little whole to fire up in the morning.

Staff was nice. But, slow service. Sometimes you ordered a drink and they would come back in 15min....sometimes not at all. Island time, I get it, but still not up to par for other resorts we have stayed at.

One really upsetting thing---When we booked, Nanny service was $7, paid direct to the Nanny. About a month before we left, it changed, without notice to $20/$15/$10 per hour for the first/second/third hour. I contacted the resort and was told it was to increase the Nanny's wages to make sure they kept the best people....OK, I am cool with that and at least its going to the Nanny/local.

Tried to pay the Nanny after the first day....was told they were not allowed to take cash anymore directly and it would be billed to our room. I thought that was a little odd. Come to find out, directly from the staff, that the Nannys are STILL making $7/hour for watching a single child and the resort is POCKETING the rest. Super unethical, and I didn't appreciate being lied to by management when I asked the reason
for the increase. Definitely soured us some on this place...

They had entertainment every night at like 8pm in the center of the resort...it was loud enough to keep you awake until 11pm or so if you are in the two closer buildings. With two small kids, not ideal.

The beach was one of the nicest I have seen. Great sand, tons of palapas, lots of chairs. Snorkle to reef right from the beach no problem. Lots of fish. Feed them bread with the kiddos and they loved it.

My wife enjoyed her treatments at the spa.

Kids club was very bare bones, and it seemed like they never stuck to anything like what the 'schedule' said.

Overall, we got a smoking deal packaging this place with airfare for a week, so our expectations were not too high. We had fun as a family. Will we go back or recommend this place to others? No.
