How to Get There
We took a family trip here the first week of April. We stayed in the Ocean Front Suite. I highly recommend this room it is worth the extra cost, we had a beautiful view. I have traveled to a lot of resorts and this ranks pretty high on my list. This is a small resort which I prefer, with an authentic Jamaican feel. I thought the food was pretty good compared to other resorts I have stayed at. The service was excellent throughout the resort. The drinks were good not too watered down. Tons of activities throughout the day to keep you busy. They had a cool little jungle area with hammocks you could relax in to get out of the sun. The only complaint is they had a lot of resort workers camped out in this area. The water temperature in the pools and the ocean was perfect The snorkeling was excellent we went everyday. Saw all kinds of fish. Take the boat ride out. The guy even took us to a snorkeling spot where we saw some different kinds of fish that we didn't see closer to shore. We took a trip with Kemar Smiles to Blue Hole and Konoko Falls which I highly recommend. We were the only tourist at the falls which made the experience even better! Visited Scotchies, wasn't impressed. Ordered a margarita and they charged us $21. Totally took advantage of us I would never go back there. If you have children this is the place to go. They were doing several improvements while we were there but I honestly didn't see any areas that were run down, or falling apart that other visitors are complaining about. The only real complaint I have is that transportation was included on our reservation confirmation. The hotel would not honor it since it I made the reservation after Jan. 1 I felt they should have since it was stated on my confirmation email. If you want a great family vacation with am amazing beach and tons of activities then this is the resort for you.
We're skeptical of Jewel Runaway Bay after reading all the negative reviews; however, our experience differs in that we came for what we're looking for, a nice clean beach with clear water and good snorkeling by our doorsteps. Jewel is definitely a great valued resort as children up to 14 stay free. For about $300/night during peak Spring Break (even less during off peaks) with all inclusive meals, unlimited drinks and cocktails and non motorized activities, for 2 adults and 2 teenagers, it's more than you can bargain for.
Jewel is a little out of the way towards Ochi so the shuttle ride provided by the resort from Montego Bay airport took a little more than 1.5 hour. After we collected our luggage and passed inspection, an airport personnel directed us to the appropriate counter for transfer. At first, we thought he was trying to sell us something but he said he's not trying to sell anything and directed us to the counter for the shuttle to Jewel. At this time, Jewel contracted with JTL Tours to transport their guests and we're taken to a shuttle bus that take all passengers to different resorts along the way. Driver will ask for tips and we're apprehensive as to whether this is typical of Jamaica and did not respond.
Prior to our arrival, I'd asked the resort using their website contact information regarding shuttle information (as when I initially booked, I was told that we'd had to provide flight information a few days before departure) and whether they'd match the pricing as Jewel was having a special promotion, no one responded via email and I had to call in to inquire. The toll free clerk was very professional and guided me on what to do as he could not adjust the price since my departure was just one day away. He said that for any pricing adjustment, it must be done within 14 days and I told him that I emailed the resort more than 14 days ago. He asked me to print out the email and mentioned it to the check in desk. So when we're checking in, we asked the receptionist to adjust the price, which he kindly did. We arrived in the late afternoon and there's a party of sort at the bar by the lobby (the lobby is small and dark in my opinion), which was so loud and it didn't feel restful so Jewel didn't have great first impression on us. Things got better though, however.
We checked into our room (reserved two double beds) but were given a king and the resort put in two other single beds that it felt so tight we decided to take one bed out. The room in our opinion is quite small and there's no need to pay for a partial water view room because we could only see it if we sit outside in the small terrace. The shower while is separated from the wash area is very tight and stuffy as there's no window nor ventilation for moisture to escape. Housekeeping though did service our room well though we wish that bath mats would be replaced every day without guests having to ask either call or look for a housekeeper for bath mats and towels.
Food wise, we had daily buffet breakfast (freshly made blended juice was great) or lunch at the Coral Café and enjoyed the views of the ocean. We also had dinner at Platinum Restaurant (I would skip the lobster dinner with extra charge and if possible, visit Fireman’s Lobster Pit in Negril). Golden Saber Sushi and Jade Samurai were rather disappointing (service was super slow and the server forgot our drinks at Jade Samurai) and our best meal was at Court Jesters. Two Palm Jerk Hut made decent jerk pork, etc. and we did not have to wait for an order.
Activities wise, we thought that the big hit would be the water park for our kids, but perhaps because they’re much older now, they did not enjoy it as much as we hoped. We spent on morning there and they’re done moving the rest of the time docking at the beach where they loved to snorkel, played with the sand and water, kayaking, riding water trike, participate in some kids activities or just do nothing and be lazy with a book in hands. There’re plenty of lounge chairs by the beach or pools but for a prime view, we did have to get up early to reserve out chairs. No issues with beach towels (though we would exchange fresh towels at the end of the day rather than wait in the morning). There was one day where there’re a lot of cruisers came in and it was super crowded and loud, not something we’re used to.
Overall, we had a pleasant stay at Jewel. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Jewel Runaway Bay is not a luxury resort but if you’re looking for a good value resort with a nice clean beach and clear water with easy snorkeling, Jewel can’t be beat.
We traveled to Jamaica as family of 4, kids ages 15 and 10 and stayed in the premier guest room. Our room had a king bed with two twin cots and we had plenty of room for the amount of time we spent in it. The resort is nice and has a tropical feel. It is not a huge resort so the restaurants, pools and beach are close.
One of the reasons we picked this resort was for beach and it did not disappoint. It was, clean, quiet and we always were able to find chairs and shade.
There is plenty of water sport activities for the family, we ocean kayaked, went sailing on the Hobie cat, snorkeled at the reef near the edge of the designated swimming area and tried wind surfing for the first time.
Snorkeling tours are offered by an outside vendor departing from the resort, which I would not recommend for the cost. This is the only organized tour we took while at the resort. They take you out in a boat not far from the resort to where the reef is deeper. We actually ended up being the only family, which I thought would be nice but the boat operator barely spoke to us. He was not friendly and we felt like he was being inconvenienced by us.
We also spent a good bit of time at the water park which my kids enjoyed the most. We found it was least crowded late in the afternoon.
There was maybe one or two days during our trip cruise passengers visited the resort on a day pass. They were only there for about half the day and we were still able to find chairs at the beach and the water park.
The food at the resort was okay. I thought the grill and Court Jesters were both good for lunch, although Court Jesters was slow. We did try Court Jesters for dinner one evening it was the best meal of the trip and we had good service.
Overall we were satisfied with our trip. The resort has plenty of activities and food options for a family. The beach was nice and the resort staff was friendly.
First time to Jamaica and I must say, it will not be our last. Truly an amazing experience. We went with our 2 boys (7 &10), brother and sister in-law and their 5 year old, and were lucky enough to have some friends their with us. Best part of the resort was the people. Amazing staff. Everyone was super friendly. Food was great. Entertainment was good too. Beach was amazing. Clear water, coral very close to the shore for those who are not experienced can still have a good look at the sea life. Clean beach too. Only real issue that we had was 1. The room we had backed to the main kitchen where they make the food for the buffet, very noisy with the food carts going back and forth. 2. The water park got really busy when they allowed the locals to enjoy the day with us. Almost dangerous in terms of kids jumping around the lazy river when 2-5 year olds were in their too. Some people got upset and left the area. I love the idea of the shared water park, but the capacity needs to be revisited. Best part I must say was the conversations we had with Craig the life guard and Paul the security guard. Two amazing people. Very helpful guys. That’s not to takeaway from the other staff members who are also great. Goofy was a great guy too, what a character. One thing I would like the resort to change, please allow the staff to sit down and enjoy a meal with the guests. Only the entertainers have that privilege. Goofy sat with us for lunch one day and it was great to hear about life on the island. Speaking for myself, I love to visit different country’s and mingle with the residents. You learn so much about speaking to residents. I would have loved to hit the town, but with 2 small kids, you tend to worry. I’m already looking forward to another trip to Jewel Runaway bay which hopefully will be soon. Thanks guys for giving our family great memories that I know my boys will remember for the rest of their lives. Great work all around. Keep it up.
Family of 3 with a 3 year old girl had a blast in this resort.
First time visitor to Jamaica,
Bottom line: amazing smaller size, personable, and private resort that keeps adults and kids happy. This resort is great if you are looking to kick-back and just relax.
1) Great buffet food!!! Get there when buffet opens right on time, the food was so fresh and delish! Teppanyaki, jerk chicken hut was good too.
2) Great kids program with caring staff, our girl loved it! Rock painting, pool time, movie night, disco night etc.
3) Clear beach, friendly staff
4) Our suite had a plunge pool in the back which kept little one busy while adults were resting on lounge beach chairs. This balcony has more privacy than the regular rooms.
5) Lots of families with children to play together
Suggestion for improvements:
1) Rooms could use some updating
2) No bathtub, minimal refrigarator stock, slow service in bringing requested items to
3) Room service at additional charge was expensive, $5/dish; restaurants don't usually
4) Some bar staff lacking customer service
Comment on Excursions:
1) Highly recommend Rick's Cafe!!!!! It is a must visit place. If you dare, try cliff jump. Unfortunately, we chickened out!
2) Negril beach was ok, resort beach was better.
3) My 3 year old girl enjoyed playing with dolphins, parrots, and lovebirds at Dolphin Cove! Thanks to driver, Marlon, who went above and beyond to help find my cell phone. I found it in one of the rum bags I got from the gift shop. :)
Beware of some deceiving sales tactic, I did not pay for the price tag, I made sure I negotiated! If you like Rum Cremes, it is cheapest to buy them at the airport on the way out!
Have a great time and we would definitely come back to Jamaica.
