Upscale, adult-centric boutique on the sea, with beach butlers, a splurge-worthy spa and three top-tier restaurants
Punta Cana, the manmade resort area at the Dominican Republic’s eastern tip, is good for reliable sunny weather and plenty of beach time along its 20-mile stretch of sand. Removed from the sprawling megaresorts Punta Cana is known for, the 55-room Sivory resort fronts a secluded beach that’s dotted with palm trees, lounge chairs and thatched palapa umbrellas. Walk farther down the beach and you’ll eventually find other resorts, but for honeymooners and romance-seeking couples, it’s hard to beat Sivory’s unblemished beach and wonderfully private atmosphere.
Bed and Bath
The 55 suites are uniformly spacious (the smallest is 650 square feet), decorated in earth tones and sandy shades, and all have balconies or terraces overlooking the ocean or gardens, plus private plunge pools in the Luxury Oceanfront Suites. There are 21st-century extras, too, such as individual air-conditioning controls, wine coolers and soaking tubs for two, or a couples shower with double showerhead. Honeymoon Suites are a whopping 950 square feet, and the staff may just sprinkle flowers and chocolates around the suite — whether you’re on your honeymoon or not.
When you do venture outdoors, there’s plenty to entertain you: boogie boards, kayaks, and snorkels, not to mention a deep sea fishing charter. Or if you’ve been inspired by the natural relaxation of Sivory, there’s also a menu of massages, facials and treatments at the Aquarea Spa & Wellness Center. The sense of romance is restored after dark, with dinner by candlelight (with a dress code) at the lavish Gourmond restaurant, which has an 8,000 bottle wine list; with Mediterranean fare in an alfresco setting at La Veranda; and with successful Asian fusion at Tau, a sexy spot with just eight tables. Afternoon tea and a piano and cigar lounge highlight Sivory’s adult vibe and, more important, the invitation to relax and do nothing at all.
In the Area
The Sivory is not adjacent to a golf course, but the concierge can easily book tee times for you at one of the 18-hole courses around Punta Cana. You can book them with the front desk well in advance of your stay. And if you tire of your own secluded stretch of beach at the hotel, head out to the best of the rest: Playa Cabo Engaño, Playa del Macao, and Playa El Cortecito. Don't rent a car, since taxis are cheap and plentiful, and there are even water taxis at El Cortecito.
