A luxe, 17th-century former monastery with a stunning spa - includes breakfast and a dining discount

The Lowdown

With its statement-making interiors, timeless views, Renaissance paintings,
Flemish tapestries and old-world glamour with a modish twist, this recently renovated 17th-century former monastery makes it impossible not to get swept up in its charms. Set in its own parkland, within walking distance
of the historic center of Gubbio, this luxurious property has much to delight design-lovers,
wine aficionados, and foodies seeking the finer things in life in
Umbria, also known as Italy’s green heart.
As Italian hideaways
go, this gem scores pretty highly on everything, from the zen spa with an
impossibly long treatment menu to the varied wine shop that serves gourmet delicacies ranging from cold-cut meats to truffle sauces. There’s also an
ultra-modern wellness water park, a first-rate restaurant that showcases
Umbrian food and wine, and a convent pharmacy where you can stock up on
medicinal plants, teas and all sorts of weird and wonderful healing

All of the 92 individually styled rooms assure
elegant décor. All enchant with a
meticulous mix of design elements according to their setting; expect
antique furnishings in the rooms within the ancient monastery walls, and
a more contemporary finish in those set in the newly built section of
the hotel.

dining is a very Umbrian affair at signature restaurant Nicolao, a
stylish à la carte spot with oak wood panels, beamed ceilings and sleek
interiors. Expect adventurous cuisine created with local ingredients,
and some 300 regional wines from the hotel’s cellar. The ancient
reservoir, where the Capuchin friars used to collect rainwater, has been
lovingly transformed as La Cisterna Wine Shop. Head here to buy wine,
champagne, honey, jam, truffle sauce, cereal, oil, cheese and cold-cut

For Zen-like calm, the spa is outfitted
with a Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, relaxation room, sensory showers,
well-equipped gym and luxurious treatment rooms. Signature therapies by
Aveda include skin resurfacing, deep anti-stress massages, oxygen
facials and awakening body scrubs. The spa also features the Raxul
Cycle, a ritual inspired by the ancient Roman thermal baths that
exfoliates the body with mud, clay, salt, chocolate, apple and grape. For
the ultimate water-based thrill, Parco Acque is an ultra-modern and
slightly surreal wellness water park designed by esteemed Italian
architect Simone Micheli. This open-plan space with dedicated swimming
lanes and a hydromassage area is about as chilled-out as it gets.

a parkland estate on your doorstep, you’ll be within walking distance
of Gubbio, the little town perched on a hill that’s
big on medieval palaces, churches, cathedrals, Gothic-style buildings and truffles. Marvel at the imposing Palazzo dei Consoli, visit Gubbio
Roman Theater at sunset, admire the frescoes at St. Ubaldo Basilica, and
soak up the splendor of Ducal Palace. It’s also worth renting a car to
explore Umbria, the region known as Italy’s green heart that lures with
old-world traditions and an outstanding gourmet scene.

EXCELLENT HOTEL with all comfort needed for a pleasant stay in GUBBIO

Agreeable surprise to find this beautiful hotel (4 stars) in Gubbio, the region of truffles. The room is spacious, with free WIFI, separate bathroom, TV, refrigerator. The breakfast is very copious and the waitresses are kind and helpful. A big car park and a car par for visitors. Other possibilities such as SPA, MASSAGE can be asked. I certainly go back to stay in this hotel for my next trip to Gubbio.

Comfortable and walking distance to the old city

This converted monastery is unique because of its layout and amenities. The restaurant is very nice and they have a fitness area that might put some health clubs to shame. The rooms are nice but nothing spectacular. The hotel is approximately 10 minutes from the old city but be prepared to walk the steep driveway from the hotel and then navigate the hills in the city. This is a good choice for visiting Gubbio with if it includes an overnight

A good location for seeing Gubbio with friendly helpful staff

The best thing about this hotel is the staff on the front desk. They gave us a great welcome and really excellent ideas about walks and drives in the area and restaurants. The rooms are adequate but rather soul less. Breakfast is very good and again the staff attentive and helpful The worst experience for us was the hotel restaurant. They brought one wrong dish and served the wine for the main dish to my husband when he had almost finished. Perhaps it was just an off day as the service elsewhere was impeccable.
