How to Get There
We booked for a short October break, and had a wonderful stay, thanks to Maria Teresa Cioffi and her team's great hospitality, a lovely room and some amazing cookery classes (also with Maria Teresa). I couldn't recommend this place more highly, both as a base to explore this part of Italy, and for the classes. We felt we got a real taste of Italy here, both literally and figuratively.
First, the guest house: it's on one floor of an apartment block in Sorrento, well-placed for the centre of town. The rooms are modern and clean, with very (very) comfortable beds and a good-sized shower room.
Breakfast, of pastries, fruit, juice and coffee, is served in your room each morning, at an agreed time - you can take it on the balcony if you want. There's a fridge/minibar, reasonably priced, and lots of shops and restaurants nearby (the hugely popular restaurant La Cantinaccia del Popolo is right opposite). It makes a great base, and if you want a swim you can buy a pass for a big hotel nearby - we did, and that was good too.
But what really, really made our trip was the culinary experience: we wanted our son, aged 9, to taste a little bit of real Italian food, and see how it was made. What a time he had: we all learned about sorbets and ice-cream one night, and made pizza in a wood oven a couple of nights later.
Maria Teresa was an engaging, generous teacher at the family restaurant (around 10-15 minutes walk up the main street), full of tips on good ingredients (vital!) and insights into their business. He loved it. We all did - we were enthused enough to come home and immediately buy some kit to make our own pizzas, true to their four-day dough recipe. We may never look at delivery pizza the same way again...
All told, both room and classes come highly recommended, and this also makes a good base from which to explore Sorrento, Pompeii, Vesuvius and the rest.
A tip: we hired a car at Naples airport because Sorrento is around 1hr away, but if we did this again we'd just book a transfer, and take buses, taxis and/or the train to Pompeii and Vesuvius - driving here is hard work! There is a car parking space available, though, for an extra cost, should you think a car essential. Sixt at Naples airport were great.
We had a lovely stay at Bougainvillae Relais. The room was clean and modern. We were welcomed with open arms by mrs. Pina. The breakfast was good. Maria Theresa helped us perfectly when we dropped our car keys in the elevator shaft. Location was good, near to Sorrento's centre.
Delightful host, beautiful, sparkling clean room, centrally located in Sorrento, with a balcony overlooking the street below. The bed was very comfortable, continental breakfast was included and private parking was available for €20/day. Maria Teresa provided us with suggestions and a map for exploring the city. Although we didn't have time to enjoy it, pool vouchers are available if requested. Overall we were extremely satisfied with our stay!
