How to Get There
Spent three nights at Villa Blanca before heading to the pacific coast. It was secluded and felt like we were the only place left on earth. Up in the fog and cloud forest everything is still and peaceful. We had a lovely casita with a fireplace and jacuzzi tub. The staff were very attentive and helped to make our stay great. Gabrielle checked us in with a smile and welcome beverage and Julio took good care is ya at each breakfast. I liked the experience and would recommended it as a part of a bigger Costa Rica experience.
The things to be aware of is that due to its remoteness, if you don’t have a car you are pretty well confined to the place at night. There is one restaurant and bar in the main house. It was lovely but be prepared to eat at the same restaurant a few times. It’s a great place to read a book and play card games!
After a long drive from San Jose we received a warm welcome at this hotel. It was more than I expected in the Cloud Forest, very comfortable accommodation and great location with lovely trails to explore flora and fauna
A very good hotel with seperate cabinas, lots of wild life, hummingbirds, night walk was interesting and so was the early morning one. Not much to do if you don't go on a walk or take one of the excursions away from the hotel.Staff were very good friendly and helpful. There is a cinema, were you can watch dvds on a large screen. You have to buy food at the hotel as the nearest property is 10k away.
My friend and I visited for 4 nights. We had booked this hotel after looking at not only the reviews from other guests, but also when reading about the hotel's ethos for sustainability. We were greeted by exceptional staff, friendly and professional and to the end of our stay they remained so.
We took a number of tours- the night walk, which I highly recommend, the zip lining and canopy walk, the trip to the volcano and a visit to Carara National Park. All of our guided tours were amazing, with our nature guide allowing us to make subtle changes during our trip to Carara- including bringing lunch to us, as we viewed the wild Scarlet Macaws and agreeing to us staying later than normal at the park.
Being coeliac I understand how my diet restriction may be restrictive for the kitchen staff- but no, they easily accommodated me and provided good alternatives when required to do so.
The grounds are lovely and well maintained; and I was amazed and delighted at the wildlife that could be seen.
So why the 3 stars? The accomadation that we were housed in for 4 nights was less than adequate. So bad was it, that if we hadn't had the Carara trip booked and looked forward to, we would have left early. My friend and I often travel together, in other hotels (including those in Costa Rica) our beds are double bed size- here we were given children beds- just as well neither of us are large ladies! I work outdoors- and from Scotland, so if there is one guest that understands rain and damp weather- then it is me! The clue is in the name "Cloud Forest"- so we were prepared for less than ideal weather conditions outside. What we were not prepared for were the less than ideal conditions inside our cottage. On the second day, we asked for a dehumidifier- in the first two hours, it was full of water! As it was old, and very noisy- we could not have it on during the evening....Our beds, bedding and clothing were constantly damp. Due to the damp air, when we did light a fire- the smell lingered. The bedding was old- and frankly the pillows should have been put in the bin. I do not expect such poor accommodation in a such a hotel- we were after all not staying in a hostel.
All in all the lack of maintenance and updating for the cottages let down the rest of the hotel. We were glad to leave the accommodation, but sad to leave the area and friendly staff.
Our first time in Costa Rica and our first time in a cloud forest! After a long flight and ‘interesting’ road journey we received a warm and friendly welcome. Our casitas was great and even had a log fire, there was also a dehumidifier which we weren’t expecting but was needed.
You are really in the clouds, so it was damp most of the time, but this added to the atmosphere. Lots of trails to go on and there is plenty to see, went on the bird watching guided walk and the bird man was really knowledgable. Even pointed out where the snakes usually are! Visited the small church but didn’t have chance to help with the milking of the hotels cows.
Because you are miles from anywhere you do have to eat at the hotel. Breakfast is buffet style with yoghurt and cheese from the hotels cows. Dinner was very good, well presented and tasty, the veg is grown on site and everything else is local.
All the staff were really friendly and helpful and obviously proud of the hotel and the reserve.
If you want to sample life in a cloud forest this is a good place to start.
