Cloud Forest - a little slice of heaven

Be sure and take the tours on site that they offer. Also, get a taste of the cheeses that they make onsite. Attend the 8:30 milking of the cows and get a chance to milk them and feed the calf's with baby bottles. Hike the trails. Lots of wildlife.

This is a great hotel. The property is beautiful with miles of manicured walking trails, cows to milk and green houses to tour. They have a gorgeous chapel with a ceiling decorated in hand painted tiles.

Remote Hotel with Lots to Offer
Reviewed 1 month ago

The final leg of our journey, after the long flight from the UK, was the transfer of roughly 1¼ hours from San Jose airport. We knew the Villa Blanca was remote but it turned out that it was at the end of a 9km stretch of unmade pot-holed road that seemed to go on forever. Having got there however, there was a welcoming drink for us and very understanding reception staff who realised that we were very tired.
There are 36 Casita's - small individual buildings - and we were quickly shown to ours (photo) where we got some much needed sleep on a comfortable bed. Each Casita is located so that there is a view into the cloudforest and from our terrace we regularly saw humming birds gathering nectar from their preferred flowering trees. The casita itself is spacious, with a fire if needed, sizeable bathroom with large bath / jacuzzi and separate shower. Everything immaculate.
The grounds of the hotel and cloudforest are extensive - there are various trails laid out which we explored, and close to Reception, a humming bird station - we got some fantastic close-up photos! Whilst the weather in May is 'hit and miss', we were lucky and one morning we had a beautiful clear view of the Arenal Volcano in the distance.
As stated in other reviews, all the staff are very helpful and attentive. It may have helped that May is the quiet season and it was not busy, but the restaurant staff in particular were very friendly and conversational. I would also agree with other comments that food and drink seemed expensive.
We enjoyed 2 guided tours whilst we were there - the Nocturnal walk around the grounds, (which included meeting a tarantula) and the famous Quetzal tour led by Estoban where in addition to successfully locating the famous bird, we found numerous others and had our first Costa Rican Casado meal.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Villa Blanco but not the journey along that horribly bumpy road.

Staying at Villa Blanca was an amazing experience. The views were breathtaking, the grounds were immaculate and the food was out of this world. Julio was our main waiter and we enjoyed having him teach us about Costa Rica and his top notch service! Please go if you get the chance, you won’t regret it.
