Five-star Art Nouveau sleep built in 1904 in Prague’s historical center
Even though the Hotel Paris is more than 100 years old, it remains one of the most vital icons of Prague, home to the legendary Café de Paris and gourmet Restaurant Sarah Bernhardt, but has also grown more international and changed with the times, as seen in additions like Thai massage in the spa and a new outpost of the aesthetic-medicine Brandeis Clinic. Built in 1904, the hotel still retains the look of a First Republic neo-Gothic building with bold statements of Art Nouveau and original ceramic mosaics; declared a historical monument in 1984, it was returned to its original splendor after the Velvet Revolution in 1991. As writer Bohumil Hrabal put it, “Hotel Paris was so beautiful that I almost fell over. So many mirrors and so many brass banisters…and so polished that it resembled a golden palace.”
In the Area
The hotel is located in the main pedestrian area and only a few minutes’ walk from Old Town Square. It’s near the Municipal House, which now hosts art exhibitions and musical performances in a glorious old building, and Powder Tower, a 213-foot-tall tower that was the gateway to the medieval Royal Route through Old Town. Also nearby is Wenceslas Square (actually a 750-foot-long boulevard), a vibrant historic center of Prague now filled with shops, cafes, and nightlife.
