An Art Deco gem with period interiors and a grand café in Prague's historic heart
One of Prague’s most prestigious addresses since it was built during 1913-14, the hotel is distinctive for its geometric Art Deco-meets-Cubism exterior. Inside, a grand marble staircase dominates the lobby, which is flanked by figures inspired by Egyptian and Mediterranean cultures. Tiles and pillars are rich with floral and animal prints. The 86 rooms retain an Art Deco grandeur but are tricked out with modern niceties like satellite TV and heated bathroom floors. The hotel’s most famous feature is its restaurant, which has been among the most popular grand cafés in Prague for a century and was once frequented by Franz Kafka and composer Leos Janacek. Celebrity chef Zdenek Pohlreich runs the kitchen, which turns out traditional Czech cuisine with a modern twist.
In the Area
The hotel is located in the main pedestrian area and only a few minutes’ walk from Old Town Square. It’s near the Municipal House, which hosts art exhibitions and musical performances in a glorious old building, and Powder Tower, a 213-foot-tall tower that was the gateway to the medieval Royal Route that cuts through the Old Town. Also nearby is Wenceslas Square (actually a 750-foot-long boulevard) filled with shops, cafés and nightlife.
