A historic stay at a chic New England getaway in a charming martime town, including breakfast
Make a splash at a bold New Hampshire boutique hotel. In the town that it’s named for, The Hotel Portsmouth is a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winner that puts an eclectic, contemporary spin on classic New England style. Its home is an 1881 Victorian, and its interiors pair the original woodworking with pieces like leather armchairs and wooden chess boards. Less traditional are the prints and pops of punchy color, signatures of Lark Hotels, which recently renovated the property.
Other Lark touches, like small-plates breakfast and afternoon treats, are also included, as is a discount to preppy company outfitter Vineyard Vines. The real highlight, though, is Portsmouth itself, a delight for seafarers and wayfarers alike (the Times and New York magazine travel sections have both covered it). Here, everything is maritime-themed, from the Seacoast Rep Theatre to the seafood houses of Market Square – and speaking of splashes, don’t forget the Atlantic itself.
The 32 rooms are cozy retreats, stocked with unusual extras, like an iPad with local info, plus wine glasses and corkscrews (an "essential," according to the hotel). Plush linens and pillows also optimize your bed for sleeping, after your day of taking the town. Deluxe King and Queen rooms come with one king or queen bed, respectively.
One of America’s Happiest Seaside Towns 2015, according to Coastal Living, Portsmouth is a sunny southern-New Hampshire getaway on the Atlantic. Stroll to the harbor and waterfront or beaches (there are several), or engage with the local culture, catching a show at the theater or touring one of the breweries. A more unusual but equally intriguing sight is the Strawberry Banke Museum, a living-history attraction, featuring four centuries of architecture.
