How to Get There
Nice modern hotel with acceptable amenities in the room.
However it is the attitude of the staff that was really pathetic
The lady serving us, Fabiana, ushered us onto the table and walked away immediately but completely ignored giving us any cutlery
She passionately got into discussions with other customers who were ostensibly Caucasian
After waiting patiently for 10 minutes there still wasn’t any sign of cutlery so I coolly asked Fabiana if I didn’t deserve any cutlery given my brown Indian skin color - Fabiana’s face turned pale as though she had seen a ghost, not expecting to be confronted like that. After that she stayed out of my way having an African lady to attend to us
That’s obviously pathetic
Had a similar experience at the bar that evening where the barman too had a haughty racist attitude
Grow up Portobay - people like Fabiana and barman who are racists should be severely reprimanded or even sacked
As for my suggestion - people of color SHOULD NEVER EVER VISIT Portobay
We have just completed a 3 night stay here and miss it already! Love the theatre theme really atmospheric and the hotel overall was quite classy. Staff very friendly and always keen to help. Breakfast sumptuous with champagne included !
Add the good location, central for metro station, local shops and several tourist sites as well as the river.
Thoroughly recommend staying here as you will not be disappointed.
My first trip to central Porto, was a very good one. Room was modern and large, near elevator but could not hear anything at all...no noise! huge rainfall overhead shower, Rituals ammenities were a nice touch. more than anything, the staff was very helpful and gave great assistance. Breakfast was quite good with everything fresh and local options as well. Well done PortoBay team!
I start with the negative, shame cause this hotel could have been rated 05 instead of 4 but had a strange issue. First day of our holiday which was also international woman's day, after being up since 05.30 in the morning as we were travelling to Porto from London, we decide to eat in the restaurant. We go there at 20.15, the restaurant had just 3 tables occupied, the rest empty but the guy in charge told us that we cannot eat there as any moment he was awaiting for loads of people to show up and that they booked. It seemed rather strange to me, anyhow I asked if it was then possible to order and have the dinner served in the room if he had no space in the restaurant but he said that was not possible, if we want to eat the only option was to go back to the room and order a salad or sandwich from the room service menu. I also went to the front desk to double check with the lady in charge if it was really true the restaurant was fully booked later on and she called the guy in charge who confirmed that was the case and that we cannot eat there. We go to the room, we order a couple of sandwiches and at 20.35 I go back downstair as wanted to go outside for a cigarette. Guess what, the restaurant was still empty, no sign of the loads of people he was awaiting for!!! Back to the room, we had our sandwich and went downstarirs again for an after dinner ciggy, it was then 21.35 and guess what again, the restaurant was still empty. I am loading a picture about it. Now if the owner of this place can afford to loose money or customers be my guest. I would not recommend this hotel, not being able to use the restaurant as you employ odd lazy liars is not the best thing you can do. I'm still utterly offended by the way we were treated. Needless to say we never went back to try to eat there, we opted for other restaurants outside the hotel. For the rest, the room was very nice, great toiletries offered, great decor, excellent breakfats and location. I appreciated the welcome porto drink and the bar area was also really chic. Sort out your staff at the restaurant and then all will be perfect.
I would never recommend staying at the hotel. I stayed at the hotel for 2 nights with friends. The shower flooded the carpet in the room and when we informed the reception, they said they'd take care of it. Upon our return, we noticed that nothing was done through the 12 hours we were away. The staff was rude and impolite in their behaviour and did not offer any gesture to fix the problem. By day 2, the room was moist and stinking and the staff was least bothered. I have followed up with the hotel to ask for compensation for such a terrible experience and instead of fixing the problem, they asked me for evidence of the incident! Highly appalling experience.
