Dreamy Riviera Maya escape with beach beds made for two, a spa, two restaurants and views across the bay
Belmond Maroma was made for romance — literally. Originally conceived as a love nest for an architect and the woman he lured here from Chicago, today it still exudes their passion for each other and this place. On 25 beachfront acres on the Riviera Maya (just a 30-minute drive from Cancún), Belmond Maroma looks more like an eco-friendly boutique than a five-star resort. But don’t let the jungle surroundings and palapas fool you; the hotel was renovated in 2011, and the result is a casual yet indulgent escape in the Yucatan.
Bed & Bath
The stucco rooms are done in whites and neutrals with splashes of color via the throw pillows and flower petal artworks that are left by the staff every day. Each room’s amenities highlight local artisans, from the hand-painted tile in the bathrooms to the hand-forged iron candelabras. The intimate and private Garden Rooms are tucked into the lowland rain forest that surrounds Belmond Maroma. Guests can loll on their shady terraces listening to tropical birds making music in the sapote trees.
At Belmond Maroma, a morning of relaxation on the wide, white sand beach is best followed by an afternoon treatment in the Kinan Spa. Here, the signature Janzu water treatment involves floating and rocking in big pools of water, and the cleansing Temazcal ritual takes place at dusk in a low-ceilinged mini-pyramid. After about an hour of sitting among steaming volcanic rocks you’ll want to run into the lapping ocean for a dip in the dark. Save some energy for dinner at El Restaurante, where the innovative, often spicy dishes are served at tables on stone terraces at the beach’s edge.
In the Area
Take a daytrip to the closest Mayan ruins, Coba, around eighty miles south of Maroma. There are several large temple pyramids, and the chance to swim in the famed blue pools of the Yucatan at the nearby Gran Cenote. Or experience the Caribbean Sea’s vast ecosystem and get close to the world’s second-largest barrier reef with some unlimited-visibility scuba diving that can be booked directly through the hotel. For tasty meals beyond Belmond Maroma, head to Playa del Carmen and tuck into hearty Italian dishes at La Famiglia, traditional Venezuelan bites at Kaxapa Factory and authentic Mexican food at the off-the-beaten-path El Fogon. Those looking for expense-account fare flock to Oh Lala! and Imprevist.
