Overview

Beachfront seclusion on Boracay, with a sublime spa, an on-site marine sanctuary, and a clifftop cocktail lounge
The Lowdown
The trappings of a luxe resort combine with Filipino flourishes at Shangri-La Borocay, so even if you never leave the secluded grounds, you'll still feel as if you're in the Philippines. Public spaces, including the grand lobby and sleek restaurants, have pointed thatch roofs and are decorated with both contemporary and traditional artwork, while the outdoor areas are awash with indigenous flora. There's also plenty of drama, in the form of clifftop bars and restaurants, sparkling infinity pools and glass walls framing the endless water and beach views. The 219 guest rooms include Deluxe rooms and suites in the multistory main building, plus hilltop villas and a duplex Tree House Villa. All interiors are done in a crisp style of nude walls, pale woods and contemporary furnishings accented by colorful local fabrics, abaca weave rugs and lamps, and private balconies or verandas are equipped with daybeds. Marble bathrooms are decorated with intricate capiz shell work (a Filipino specialty) and come with organic Panpuri products. The four on-site eateries offer a range of dining options from globally influenced buffet fare (with a massive desert selection) at Vintana, to alfresco seafood at clifftop Sirena, Tuscan-inspired dishes at Rima and poolside pasta and thin-crust pizza at Cielo. Work it off at the well-equipped gym or by strolling the two nearly deserted beaches that flank the resort. On-site PADI diving and snorkeling courses are available for all levels; there are more than 20 dive sites and a marine sanctuary within 30 minutes of the hotel. Chi, The Spa is set on a rocky peninsula overlooking a private bay and is designed to evoke a traditional village. Treatments use natural ingredients such as coconut, pomelo and banana leaves, and there's a private pool and outdoor lounging area, but don't linger so long that you miss the spectacular sunset views (and cocktails) from your very own hillside cabana at the Solana lounge.
In the Area
{price}. Hop on one of the island's ubiquitous motorized tricycle taxis to head to {link}, Boracay's main strip. The area is divided into Stations 1, 2 and 3, all fronted by one of the widest, whitest beaches you'll ever see (and cleanest, thanks to strict monitoring and nonsmoking laws). Pop into the quirky boutiques of D Mall D (Station 2) and grab lunch at a nearby spot such as Cyma (for Greek fare) or Ole (for lively Spanish tapas). Other daytime food favorites are the American-owned Real Coffee and Tea, a tucked-away spot for hearty breakfasts and unforgettable calamansi lime muffins, and Jonah's Fruitshake, for a fresh beachside smoothie; both are near Station 1. At White Beach you can also enjoy an inexpensive outdoor massage, learn how to skimboard, rent a kayak or set sail on a paraw (a native outrigger boat).
