Romance is the name of the game at Mai Holiday By Mai Khao Lak, and this luxurious getaway offers the perfect setting for an enchanting escape. Located on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula, this tranquil resort is set amid lush foliage and overlooks a pristine stretch of sand. The property itself features a lagoon-like pool that meanders around the grounds, surrounded by clusters of chic guest rooms. Most importantly, the resort is adults-only, so you know you’re in for an intimate and exotic stay.
You’ll have plenty to keep you busy at this picturesque paradise. You can start your day with breakfast taken in the privacy of your own room, before heading to the large, free-form pool, where separate seating areas allow for a more intimate dip. Of course, there are tons of activities you can arrange for, such as tours of the area, authentic massage treatments or diving and watersports. Meanwhile, the rooftop restaurant provides the perfect spot for a meal at sunset, and, with beach butlers offering a menu of delicious cocktails, lounging on the sand has never felt so good.
The luxurious Deluxe suites offer plenty of space to kick back and relax. Large windows provide views of the lagoon and bring in plenty of natural light, while cool blue hues complement natural wooden tones to create a soothing atmosphere. The suites are so spacious that there’s room for a walk-in closet, a lounge with an extendable sofa and a large bathroom with a separate tub and shower.
Dine at the rooftop restaurant and bar, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Andaman Sea. Offering international cuisine and a variety of Thai flavors, this gourmet eatery is the perfect place to spend a romantic evening. If that’s not intimate enough for you, plan a private dinner on the beach with help from the staff. They’ll even craft a beautiful sand sculpture to make it a truly unforgettable experience.
Recharge your mind and body at Mind Romantic Spa. This nature-inspired sanctuary sets the mood with water features and rainforest views. Providing soothing, custom-tailored treatments, the expert therapists here will help you slip into vacation mode. If you want to stay active, there’s also an in-house gym, volleyball and tennis sessions, a yoga and boxing studio (we recommend the Thai Boxing class) and mountain bike rentals.
The secluded resort is located on a quiet stretch of sand in Khao Lak, on Thailand’s east coast. Surrounded by lush greenery, the beach is relatively untouched, with white sand and beautiful, clear waters. The concierge is on hand to help organize tours of the breathtaking natural landscapes surrounding the resort.
How to Get There
We stayed in a pool access room with jacuzzi on an 8 night luxury escapes voucher, travelling with 2 young children aged 3 & 1 (mid May). The resort had hardly any guests during our stay and it was nice and quiet.
The room was really nice and had two separate rooms, one with extra large king with a huge bathtub and the other had a large sofa bed/lounge. TVs in both rooms and a DVD player in the main room (DVDs free to hire from reception). The beds and pillows were extremely comfortable. Cot was provided, including linen. Very happy with the room however, the shower could do with a deep clean. Housekeeping came every day and changed towels, swept floors, changed bins and replaced the complimentary water supply of 4 bottles per day. Had a few small maintenance issues that were quickly rectified (broken towel rack and jacuzzi button switch not working). The direct access to the pool was fantastic as we could swim while our youngest had a day nap. There was meant to be a child safety lock on the door but it had been removed. Didn't have any issues nonetheless. The little things I appreciated in room included the torch, laundry basket (take napisan to soak stains) and a step stool for my little one to reach the basin. Umbrellas, beach bag, mats and toothbrushes were also supplied. Just no lotion in the room which was odd as it's normally supplied at resorts.
The swimming pools are large and surrounded with pretty gardens. The pool accessed from our room looked a little green and our swim suits did get stained an orange colour as mentioned in previous reviews. The kids water park was great however as the bottom is filled with rough sand and stones, I could only handle the one time in there. Maybe take some reef shoes to avoid getting sore/cut up feet.
The spa was nice to visit. Very professional. I had massage, coffee scrub and a facial. All were lovely, just be prepared as the staff get fairly close to your private areas and don't wait until you're covered up before entering the room! I had a few massages on the beach, pretty average except one which was fantastic (turn left after reaching the beach and walk about 5mins).
The food was OK. Not the best buffet breakfast but the omelettes were really good. Good range of food, just not much variety from day to day. The coffee at breakfast was horrible! I opted to get an ice coffee instead from the coffee shop. Food on the beach was nice and a lot cheaper. We liked the resorts restaurant on the beach called Talay Thai the best.
With regards to things to do..
The beach is beautiful and the water is warm like a bath (as are the pools). The rooftop bar at sunset is a must. The daily shuttle into Khao Lak came in handy. We went in 3 times during our stay to buy food, drinks, exchange money and do some bartering at the shops. Definitely worth a visit. We did an elephant trek and bathing trip about 20 minutes away. The kids loved it as did we, definitely a highlight (booked on the beach). The kids club is not much to write home about, however the painting activities were good and the movies kept our kids entertained for short periods so we could have some child free time.
Overall, we had an enjoyable and relaxing family holiday. The staff and the Thai people are so lovely and the area of Khao Lak is perfect for families and not busy/compact like other holiday areas in Thailand. Would we return...? I think we would consider it if an amazing deal came about again. We really liked the place, it just needs some love with regards to cleanliness/maintenance and better service (not that the staff weren't friendly and polite). Hopefully there will be some improvements in the future to make it a 5/5 resort.
Lovely resort and spa. Very pleasant and helpful staff. Room service and other amenities are very reasonably priced. The resort also very helpful in with organizing tours and transport. However, the restaurants within the resort had a very limited Thai menu.
We stayed here as a family 2 kids 10 and 15 and had the deluxe room in the new section as we requested with luxury holidays. When we arrived which was late, we were greeted and given lovely smelling refresher towels and a juice. After explaining how the hotel works we were given our package and shown to our room. The room was clean and lovely with a good view over the pools. Buffet breakfast was great with a lot of choices each day. The pools were reasonably clean and despite previous reviews I never found and children in the adult pool. It's a shame though that the pool bar shuts so early. We had our spa treatments which were not too bad. It yes, book as soon as possible to ensure you get your treatment. We also hired motor scooters from the hotel which were 250baht a day (make sure to check your petrol though and not get caught out) we ate out most nights as there are quite a few beach bars and restaurants along the beach if you turn right from the bottom if the hotel . The beach itself was clean and the water wonderfully warm. It's a 15 min taxi ride from the centre of town but if your on your scooter there is a lot of differed and lovely beaches to explore. White sands beach and memories bar are just a few. We had house keeping everyday and when we requested new beach towels they were supplied immediately. Really a lovely holiday and nice resort. P.s. The bed was super comfy I wanted to take it home.!
We booked through luxury escapes after firstly checking the resort website. Unfortunately, we forgot to check the reviews here. I will confirm that most of the negative comments posted by other guests are absolutely true.
Firstly, I want to refer to the "Star Rating" system used for hotels and resorts. If you search the TripAdvisor website you'll quickly learn the "Star Rating" relates to facilities and amenities .... NOT quality of staff or service. So, 5-star doesn't mean you'll be greeted at the door by a doorman in top and tails. No! Cleanliness, service, and even views, don't feature in the rating system at all.
MKL certainly has the right facilities to rate as 5-star. Pools, restaurants, day spa, bars, etc. But all are poorly staffed by people who are poorly trained and REALLY DON'T CARE! The offhanded, nonchalant way staff go about their business appears to have manifested in the senior manager's office and has filtered all the way down to the guy who patrols the beach.
Cleaning and maintenance of general facilities seems to stop at room service and pool cleaning. Common corridors are filthy and lifts stink like wet dog.
Here's a few other things we noticed:
- the "shuttle" to Khao Lak is a tray-top truck with hard wooden bench seats. You have to climb up the back;
- timber boardwalks are rotting. Kids get splinters. Some of the ends of timbers are sticking up causing guests to stub their toes;
- a wasp nest the size of a football is attached to the wall of level 2 right near the pool bar. These wasps are about 1 1/4" long. Big! There's hundreds of them!
- rooms aren't cleaned everyday unless you pester the staff at the front desk;
- cleaners can't speak English. They refer you to the front desk;
- got food poisoning from a sandwich purchased one lunch time ... It came back up within the hour;
- rats live in holes under the beachfront villas and near the restaurant kitchens;
- luggage was broken by staff when being taken from reception to the room;
- I thought restaurant waitstaff were being instructed via mobile phones ... turns out they were Facebooking ... some mornings I set the table myself ... I replentished the coffee cups myself one morning ... I went to the kitchen to ask for milk another morning ... but don't worry ... their Facebook posts are up to date !!!
- the tour booking office is very expensive.
There are many resorts in the Khao Lak area with superior service. We've staying in another resort before for a similar price. Look for something with more positive reviews.
I can only fault this place 3 small things.
1. No sun cover over the kids pool area.
2. The bus into town should have more times available.
3. No pool side bar service (i.e. someone coming around to deck chairs taking orders).
Everything else was wonderful.
We used luxury escapes 10 nights package with ALL the inclusions.
